And that’s the ballgame….
We won one we should have won the way we should have won it….
Going down to face the NOLES next week will be a different matter.
POP!!!
#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!09/16/2017 at 3:24 PM #123987Fastback68ParticipantPack wins, SFN empty.
09/16/2017 at 3:26 PM #123988freshmanin83ParticipantFurman is 0-2? State better win by 30.
+ 3
09/16/2017 at 5:11 PM #123989TexpackParticipantFortunately the Noles game kicks off while I’ll be watching the Coogs and the Red Raiders live inside TDECU.
09/16/2017 at 7:29 PM #123990choppack1ParticipantGood:
Finley, JaySam, finally got running game going.
Bad: defense plew a lot of assignments, missed only fg attempt badly.. Furman’s kicker was $$.
09/16/2017 at 9:35 PM #123992mak4dpakParticipantThink we need to find a witch doctor to break the FG kicker curse. It is just unreal, after all the previous NFL kickers we had.

Truth. After they dug up the East side, the magnetic energy changed. We should work on it.09/16/2017 at 11:07 PM #123995choppack1ParticipantClemson looking very impressive. The d on Jackson first 3 quarters has been nasty.
09/16/2017 at 11:22 PM #123996McCallumParticipantMouth Carolina sucks.
Kentucky whipped them.
Should not have lost that one.

#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!09/17/2017 at 8:06 AM #123998ryebreadParticipantWe needed a good win and got one. The offense did to an undersized and outmatched team what they were supposed to. It was good that we got McClendon and the second team some work in the fourth because one hit to Finley could make him our starter.
Defensively, I’m not so surprised that Furman got a few big plays. That’s been how GT has looked best when outmatched where they can’t grind out drives. Our secondary is still a huge question mark.
The kicking game….. Well, if I were DD I would have done a little bit of recruiting after that game. If Furman can find a guy that can put 45 yard field goals routinely through the uprights then why can’t we?
The season starts next week. Can we go 6-3 from here on? Outside of 3 games, every one seems very winnable, and we could even potentially upset 2 more. That S. Carolina loss will sting though because they are not good.
09/17/2017 at 10:30 AM #12400166packParticipantWho do you think benefited the most from coaching change -NCSU or Northern Illinois ?
09/17/2017 at 4:11 PM #124005TheAliasTrollParticipantYES! In your face FUR-MAN. Suck it. We’re #1!
Enjoy it boys, soak it all in while you can… I’ve got that unshakable feeling Dave Boring.. errr.. Doeren will be condemning players and/or fans come Saturday afternoon.
09/18/2017 at 8:31 AM #124009tractor57ParticipantWhat more can you do than a beat down? Agreed there are still some unanswered questions for the ‘Pack. Those would not be answer by the beat down of Furman. The team got a win, The second team offense got significant playing time. So winning is now boring? I get it you do not like Coach D but unless you can buy out his contract (and convince the athletics admin to do they buy out he is here).
09/18/2017 at 8:40 AM #124010etab4uParticipant66Pack, I realize your question is mostly rhetorical and spurred by NIU upsetting Nebraska. But it is interesting to note that DD’s “success” at NIU came after the program had been largely built by Jerry Kill. He is being asked to do something different here at NCSU – actually build a program and at a higher level. It may take a different skill set to build a Cadillac than it does to drive one. We should probably keep that in mind for the “next coaching search” because past results sometimes do indicate future performance – if the tasks are similar.
09/18/2017 at 4:02 PM #124013TheAliasTrollParticipantThe team got a win, The second team offense got significant playing time. So winning is now boring?
YES! It was absolutely boring. I don’t think I am alone in that sentiment either judging by the empty seats after the 1st half.
But by all means, pat yourself on the back for beating a team that’s put up a 10-26 record since 2014 playing in the mighty Southern Conference if it suits you.
09/18/2017 at 5:00 PM #124014pack44fanParticipantIt was a game that the pack should have won and did, nothing more, nothing less.
09/18/2017 at 6:53 PM #124016PackerInRussiaParticipantIf they had gone back in time and beaten South Carolina, then I would have been impressed.
09/18/2017 at 8:42 PM #12401813OTParticipantI haven’t seen any comments on DD’s overall record at NCSU reaching .500 with this win.
I doubt that DD condemned any players or fans last Saturday afternoon. Next Saturday afternoon? The smiles will be gone when reality once again lands on top of this program with a resounding THUD.
09/19/2017 at 9:08 AM #124024tractor57ParticipantYou know what? I might not I’ll even read SFN any more this year. This used to be a place to have discussions about ‘Pack athletics (good and bad) without all the drama. Now it is about Silent Sam and the antifa. I get the need for a place to have those discussions but when that become the focus (along with the constant ‘fire the coach’) drum beat maybe time to spend my time elsewhere.
09/19/2017 at 9:32 AM #124025gso packbackerParticipantYES! It was absolutely boring. I donβt think I am alone in that sentiment either judging by the empty seats after the 1st half.
Respectfully disagree Troll. I was in the parking lot the ENTIRE second half, but NOT because the game was boring.
Let’s face it, it was hot (I was in the direct Sunlight), they don’t serve alcohol in section 2, and I can watch the game in the parking lot thanks to ESPN. If the game were a conference game, I would have been back in my seat for the 3rd quarter, but it wasn’t and I wasn’t.
Sorry to nitpick, but that does seem to be general modus operandi around here these days. π
Now, on to next week where we get an FSU team who has only taken the field once so far this year, but with a rookie under center. A recipe for a interesting game, just not sure for whom.
09/19/2017 at 9:44 AM #124026ryebreadParticipanttractor57: My suggestion — ignore the politics, etc.. That’s been thankfully largely cleaned up. Enjoy chatting with a handful of very, very good posters about NC State sports, which we all share an interest in.
I don’t think the drum is just “fire the coach.” One has to put the discussion in context. We clearly made a bad hire in basketball with Gott on the heels of a bad hire in Lowe. Many on the site were incredibly invested in both of those searches and this site was probably the best on the internet for coverage. I think two straight bad hires in our crown jewel really left a foul taste in peoples’ mouths, particularly as we watched both the Lowe and Gott ships predictably sink.
With Lowe, he was one of us, so it was easy to point to the AD. We all wanted Lowe to be a huge success, even though we knew from the day the hire was announced how it would end up. With Gott, the AD badly misplayed the end game, rolled out a retread with major red flags and then later de-incentivized him with a head scratching contract extension. That move screamed of an inside deal due personal relationships. I think it’s understandable that NC State’s fans are a bit wary of the administration, particularly the same administrations that sold them LTRs/PSLs and seem to miss a lot of the little customer service things on game day.
With DD, we took a gamble and most realized it. I think most really took a “wait and see” approach. Unfortunately DD put himself and his program behind the 8 ball early between calling out the fans and that 0-8. He took a step forward, but then took a step backwards. This is the year for another step forwards. I hope it happens because I want to see the program win.
I do get it though. NC State fans have been living off table scraps outside of a few good years here and there since we had Valvano and Sheridan. That’s a long time for the accomplishments in the big 2 to amount to a Gator Bowl win over a paper tiger, and 3 Sweet 16s. During that time, we bought into Fool’s Gold with football, undermining our better “platform” for success. We were so starved for anything that looked good that we got distracted and made poor strategic decisions.
The good news is that I think that all of this is about to change. I think KK was a good hire in basketball, and within 3 years we’ll be in the top 4 of the ACC. In 5 years we’ll be poised to snatch the crown as Duke, UNC, Louisville, Syracuse and Miami all transition. I have not had any real hope for basketball since V until now. I can’t wait for basketball season.
I also think we’ll see a transition in the AD’s ranks. Yow’s done a good job and the non-revenue sports are the best they’ve been since the 1980s. The Moore and KK hires look good (regardless of whether she did it or Murphy did with KK). Avent’s still chugging along (IMHO punching above the program’s weight). The next AD will clearly be tasked with the revenue sports, and probably should be the one making the decision about the direction of the football program. They may decide to double down on DD, and if so, the DD will have new meaning. They may decide to go in a different direction, but if so seemingly building off a solid base. That’s a win/win all the way around, so I think most are willing to be patient in football.
09/19/2017 at 10:30 AM #124027TheCOWDOGModeratorAgreed on halftime departures. I did not go back in because the sun was quite unbearable when sardine canned.
09/19/2017 at 11:56 AM #124028tractor57ParticipantRye I do hope you are right and for 99% of what you say I am in agreement. I guess I’m Jonesing for more sports discussion. For years this was the place to go for reasoned content – sometimes I agreed, sometimes I did not but there always good discussion. I agree DD was a flyer, I also think the football team is progressing. Amato brought passion but not the other things, TOB brought the other things but not the passion. Maybe DD will grow into a good balance of both. The BB coach issue has really been bad since V but with Keats I see some hope. OK my venting over now go and knock over Silent Sam π
09/19/2017 at 3:03 PM #124029gso packbackerParticipantTractor57, I believe there are many of us who do the forum “drive by” in hopes of finding something new/worthwhile posted, but don’t stop to add anything to the conversation. I’ll try to do better, but careful what you ask for. π
I do believe the football team is progressing, but the pace has been slower than I expected (didn’t help to 0-8 in year 1). As with every other football coach in recent years, I get most frustrated by the consistency of the inconsistency. I’ve done the analysis, made the pretty charts and graphs, and they all make me feel like the movie Groundhog Day. Wash, rinse, repeat!
The low point for me personally last year was the BC game. I walked out of there fully supporting a change in coaching. While I understand how the powers that be might have come to a different conclusion, I thought it made sense to change. No, I wouldn’t have expected a homerun hire, but I feel an upgrade was within reach.
As for this season, a good season was 8 wins, a solid season was 7 wins, and a marginal season was 6 wins. I didn’t think we would win both USC and ND, so that means we need to go 4-4 in the ACC. Certainly do-able, and I am rooting hard for it. Just not holding my breath.
