Houston losing to Navy certainly done them no favors – thus the greater need for style points. But if enough other schools falter, sure, why not? They have the best player, maybe the best non-Saban coach, and one lousy 2-point loss to a top-5 team on the road.
I don’t buy the “but they didn’t win their conference/division” argument. If 2 of the best are in the same segment, such is life. Especially when the head-to-head result is less than the home field advantage bookmaking bump.
I remember that one year when the #1 slot was a revolving door week to week. If Cards win out, they need a lot of help. Damn, bama hit!!! Wow!!! Targeting???

Clempsun even with one loss wins ACC = IN
Winner of Meeeeeechigan/tOSU wins BIG = INNo way no how does UL get in ahead of any of those three
So they need UW to crater i.e., two losses
They need two loss OU to win the Big 12
At that point they’ve got to be more impressive to the committee than tOSU, Meeeeeechigan, one loss Baylor, one loss WVU etc, one loss aTmFastback: Lemme ask it like this.. if the roles were reversed and we were #7 in the same sitch as Ville would you want us to let up on a team? I for one would be mad as hell. But I bet Dave would take his foot off the gas, even though he’ll NEVER be in that hypothetical situation.
Alabama is in, even with 1 loss (which I don’t see happening), as is OSU/Mich winner.
Washington has to win out, I think.
Interesting things happen if Clemson loses – do both B1G get in? Louisville ahead of them? Both ACC if Washington loses? What if TAMU wins out after today’s loss?
West Virginny could also win out, though seems unlikely to me. They would still need a Washington and/or Clemson loss.

AT, I’m not arguing about style points. The announcers were droning on about the cards road to the playoffs probably in an attempt to kiss the viewer’s —–. They made it sound rather easy for them to get in. I don’t think so at all. They need dual losses by other teams in the running if Clemson wins out. I would have tried to hang 80 on State. It’s not an easy road to get to #4.

Fastback, I know the feeling brother. Losing a nail biter with some change on it hurts! I put a chunk of change (at least for me) on the UNC under a couple weeks ago during the hurricane because I KNEW I had +EV with the hurricane.. and that one paid off luckily! Closer than I’d have thought it would be though.
Which is a worse loss, this week or last week?
Last week for me. Because I got totally invested and sucked in.. I knew withing minutes after noon today would be bust.
