This might be bogus, but was supposed to have come out of Blacksburg NWS today:
THE DEVELOPING WINTER STORM IS COMING TOGETHER IN CLASSIC FORM. MAPS…CHARTS…RULES OF THUMB…INDIAN LORE ALL POINT TO THE SAME CONCLUSION. THE RING AROUND THE MOON…THE RUSTLING OAK LEAVES…YOUR GRANDMAS ACHING KNEE IN ADDITION TO THE COMPUTER MODELS WHICH THE METEOROLOGISTS AND WEATHER FANATICS STARE ENDLESSLY…ALL SCREAM LOOK-OUT. IF YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE THE SENSIBLE CLUES YOU ARE JUST NOT LISTENING. LOCAL FOLKS WILL TELL YOU THIS IS WHERE OUR TRUE WINTER STORMS COME FROM…WISDOM AT ITS BEST.
— End Changed Discussion —02/12/2014 at 7:51 PM #40536TheCOWDOGModeratorLeRM…all this talk of the Mountain goat ranges makes me “homesick.”
Just as long as I’m not driving the Sierras from Nov thru May.

02/12/2014 at 8:02 PM #40537BJD95KeymasterAm I wrong to think this winter wonderland would be better with peyote?
02/12/2014 at 8:12 PM #40539TheCOWDOGModeratorVa, right now…sleet is our friend. If it turns to rain, I’ve got the camping gear staged, a Tuscarora medicine man on wavelength.
Oh…and that. 50 cal on hand.
02/12/2014 at 8:19 PM #40540TheCOWDOGModeratorPluse curling til the lights go out.
And I know why they call it curling. Pompous asses must know the sport of which they may exhibit their Pompadour.
02/12/2014 at 8:27 PM #40541TheCOWDOGModeratorBeej in the cactus patch.
See…with cold weather joint pain, as we all have tonight …why does the state of NC prevent us from growing our own medicine?
02/12/2014 at 8:38 PM #40542LRMKeymasterCow, I’m pretty sure I’ve been beside you on the lift before. I skied off both confused and fascinated by the experience.
02/12/2014 at 8:38 PM #40543wirogersParticipantI do not know about the drives out west. But, I do not know if there are as terrifying as coming down Black Mountain on the old US 70 to Old Fort (for you young guns Interstate 40 did not go all the way to Asheville). A nice two lane road in January with a ice/snow storm. The trip was normal except I was only 16 driving a 1972/1973 Chevy Vega with my Mom in the passenger seat. Her death grip on anything she could get a hold of was bugging me, then I see it in my rear view mirror, a large semi-truck flashing his headlights gaining on me quickly. Deciding that scaring Mom anymore was not going to be good, I just continued to pick up speed trying to get to the bottom before the truck ran me over. Glad the ice got to more rain as we came down. Mom was not happy with the high speed, yelling at me to slow down more than once or twice or the hold way down. Needless to say, Mom did not say much to me the rest of the trip to Raleigh and the only reason she did not drive the rest of the trip was she could not drive a stick shift.

my entry is driving from Boone to West Jefferson
after an ice storm. 20mph tops. 3.5 hours.
white knuckles but stuck the landing.
here to tell about it.02/12/2014 at 8:58 PM #40545PackFamilyParticipant02/12/2014 at 8:58 PM #40546TheCOWDOGModeratorMoms do not do well on any mountain pass. From January through December.
Wives are kinda like that, too…with rare exception.
02/12/2014 at 8:59 PM #40547GowolvesParticipantRabbit ears pass on the way to Craig, Colorado in white out conditions can give you a pucker factor as well.
02/12/2014 at 9:07 PM #40548WolfInVolCountryParticipantWest side of Wolf Creek Pass in Southern Colorado near Pagosa Springs, chains only. Drove it regularly. Also, the Million Dollar Highway as it drops into Ouray. When we lived in Raleigh in the 80s and it snowed, we would grab the popcorn and go watch folks navigate Western Blvd.
02/12/2014 at 9:19 PM #40549GowolvesParticipantBeej, peyote? Now that brings back a memory. Or is that a flashback? At this point I’m not sure.
02/12/2014 at 9:24 PM #40550TheCOWDOGModeratorAll good. How these chics manage the mountain on two legs to the clubhouse is beyond me.
Guys too.!
02/12/2014 at 9:31 PM #40551WolfInVolCountryParticipantper PackFamily… this is a way-cool pic…
02/12/2014 at 9:51 PM #40552TheCOWDOGModeratorI nominate Rabbit Ears Pass as the SFN winter post of the evening.

02/12/2014 at 9:55 PM #4055313OTParticipantWho needs a Duke-UNC game after watching the ending of the Syracuse-Pitt game?
That one may top the Syracuse-Duke ending.
02/12/2014 at 10:37 PM #40554redcanineParticipantRabbit Ear Pass? That’s some genuine frontier gibbberish! Who could argue with that?
The sheriff is near.
02/13/2014 at 1:08 AM #40556PackerInRussiaParticipantSo, how does this one compare to the one about 10 years ago as far as traffic gridlock and idiocy? Fortunately I was safely tucked away at home for that beast of a dusting…I mean storm.
02/13/2014 at 1:12 AM #40557PackerInRussiaParticipantGeez, just watched the end of the Cuse-Pitt game. Too bad Pitt doesn’t have Kyle Washington. He would have never allowed that shot to get off.
02/13/2014 at 7:53 AM #40561Pack78Participant^Incredible last shot-that one will be real high on Pitt fans ‘worst loss ever’ list-we wuffies know the feeling…
02/13/2014 at 9:18 AM #40562TexpackParticipantHigh today in Houston today is only going to be 62, but at least its going to warm up a bit for the weekend.
02/13/2014 at 9:22 AM #40563BJD95Keymaster2002 was worse, because of the power outages. But it was slightly more driveable within 24 hours than this one. Kids gonna eat a shitton of leftovers now. Got no choice!
02/13/2014 at 9:42 AM #40567YogiNCParticipantWhile living in upstate NY woke up one morning to a full inch of ice. Busted my butt twice getting from the front door to my truck. Had to hold on to the antenna to scrape the glass. As i pulled out of the driveway to head to work I decided it was prudent to only ride on automatic choke. 2 miles from work I topped a hill that had a 1/2 mile shot to the bottom of the hill. At the bottom of the hill was a 4 way stop. In the left ditch was 5 cars, the right had 4, obviously people who decided to use their brakes. I never touched mine and screamed in my head “look out below I’m coming through”. Luckily no one challenged me for the right of way at the 4 way (no one else was coming). Got to work and about an hour later one of the guys who worked for me finally showed up. He made the point that I had blown right past him in his time of need. LOL.
