Forget the SNOW !!!
The Demon Deacons of Wake Forest are in the PNC tonight at 8pm…
And the Ghosts on the South Smoking Porch over at Reynolds, in spite of the snow, ALL got that “Never Forget” look on their faces and their spending the afternoon telling ghost stories… so they told me to post a reminder….
If anybody doesn’t remember, why the NCState / Wake Forest basketball rivalry is historically been, to put it politely, “intense”, it’s got a helluva lot less to do with WFU’s original location being in northern Wake County than most might think.
Instead, the Ghosts on the South Smoking Porch blame it ALL on a skinny kid named Horace…
Horace Albert McKinney, a 6’6″ small forward from somewhere down in Pamlico County he called “Lowland”, played basketball at NC State 2 seasons from 1940-42. In 1942, Uncle Sam called and Horace went with the US Army off to WWII. When he returned, Horace, for some unspoken reason finished his college basketball career over in Orange County at Carolina – 1 season – 1945-46). (Strike 1 )
Horace then played 5 seasons for the Washington Capitols and 1 season for the Boston Celtics.
Horace returned to North Carolina after a few years became the Head Coach at Wake Forest (Strike 2) from 1958–1965, winning ACC championships over rivals Everette Case (Strike 3) and Frank McGuire in 1961 and 1962. In 1962, the Demon Deacons made their only appearance in the Final Four, defeating UCLA under coach John Wooden to finish 3rd in the country.
After several years with the Pilot Broadcasting Company as the color guy for ACC basketball games, Horace returned to coaching in 1969 for the Carolina Cougars until 1971.
Known for ‘getting the most out of his little players’ and ‘his stories’, it may surprise some, who remember Horace, that he was also an ordained Baptist minister, having started his coaching career as an assistant coach while at Seminary at Wake Forest.
Most people knew and called Horace by his nickname… “Bones”…, just not ALL the Ghosts…

BOTB’s keys to the game…
same as every game…
1. MAD BIGS Play Inside-Out…
2. Markel and BATTS bring the heat and D on the perimeter
3. Everybody in Red and White plays TEAM ball…Rebounds, Turnovers, Shooting % all in our favor == a nice Win over a good team….
Home Crowd might be small tonight as the Guberner is discouraging attendance, but they’ll be looking for reasons to heat up the PNC, so they shouldn’t disappoint…
GO PACK!

01/18/2018 at 5:45 PM #129065TheAliasTrollParticipantGovenor “I want men in the women’s restroom” imploring fans to stay home.
edit: I see Bill already has covered this, in a less offensive way, of course
01/18/2018 at 5:48 PM #129066TexpackParticipantI still remember Bones saying he thought Glenn Sudhop had lost his equilibrium one night when he just fell flat in the lane with nobody around him.
01/18/2018 at 7:17 PM #129067ChemE79aParticipantTwo Bone’s stories that I remember most: (1) his explanation of why you foul to make the other team shoot free throws at the end of the game and (2) the Bones rule of free-throw shooting.
(1) This one is a story and it goes like this: A little girl is at the fair with a dollar bill. She goes up to one booth and gets change for a dollar and to the next booth to get the change made back into a dollar. She repeats this process over and over as she goes around the fair. Someone observes what she is doing and asks her why. Her explanation is that as she repeats this process over and over some one is going to make a mistake: “… and it ain’t going to be me!”
(2) This one is more of an observation. If a free throw shooter goes to the line to either shoot a one and one or two free throws and the first show bounces around the rim, maybe off the backboard once or twice but the ball still goes – the second shot will swish and be good.I have looked for those situations for years and years and while not 100% it is amazing how often it plays out.01/18/2018 at 7:39 PM #129068TheCOWDOGModeratorI got Bones, but Wake is all about my old friend and teammate, 20 yrs my senior, Jackie Murdock.
Weird how life intersects.
