N&O: NCAA accuses UNC of lack of institutional control

The University of North Carolina released the redacted version of the Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Thursday.

The 59-page document from the NCAA outlines the university’s wrong-doings during an academic scandal and includes five itemized allegations. The most damaging of the specific allegations is providing impermissible academic benefits to athletes from 2002 until 2011 and for what the NCAA refers to as a “lack of institutional control.”

    YES!

From the CBS article, the only sport mentioned was women’s basketball. Unless something has been left out, I see no reason for State fans to celebrate.

Oh, something has been left out.

First, the LOIC casts a pall on the entire athletic department. They cheated, systematically, in order to benefit multiple sports.

Second, the NOA includes football and men’s basketball in the cheating. Both are mentioned numerous times.

Did the findings actually list men’s basketball and football? YES!

    Allegation #5

    Specifically, individuals in the academic
    administration on campus, particularly in
the college of arts and sciences, did not
    sufficiently monitor the AFRI/AFAM and
ASPSA departments or provide appropriate supervision for these academic units
and their staffs. The AFRI/AFAM department created anomalous courses that
went unchecked for 18 years. This allowed individuals within ASPSA to use these
courses through special arrangements to maintain the eligibility of academically
at-risk student-athletes, particularly in the sports of football, men’s basketball and
    women’s basketball.

Did the NOA mention 2005 or 2009 specifically? YES!
    * First, note that some of the dates of the specific items have been curiously redacted.
    * Second, note that the allegation #5 is for the years 2002-03 through 2010-11
    * Third, here is one mention during the 2005 season:

FI118: January 5, 2005 – Email from Crowder to Walden. This includes, but is
not limited to, Crowder discussing men’s basketball student-athletes and
the courses to which she added them.

Wayne Walden was the person Roy brought with him from Kansas. There is no way in heck that Walden KNEW and Roy DIDN’T.
