From the Backpages of the beloved N&O…
… the bastion of fair reporting for all people…Part One…
October 12, 2014…
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently awarded NC State Alumni and former two term Governor James Baxter Hunt, Jr. their Distingushed Alumnus Award (ya’ll do remember…old Tuliplips did go to their Law School after graduating from NC State ) for “his outstanding contribution to humanity”.
While some observers saw this as a potential step towards a ‘peace offering’ of sorts to the East… with the hopes of perhaps calming down the tinfoil hat crowd over at PackPride…
… what was not expressly clear was whether or not *NC was actually sending ‘diplomatic signals’ at a much higher level and had during the State dinner visit suggested to the former Governor that a telephone call to his former Attorney General, another NC State alum, who had been active in voicing his opinion about the five year old athletic and academic scandal that has besieged the Chapel Hill campus… and other influential North Carolinians loyal to the former Governor.
Nor was it clear what remuneration other than his ‘award’ and the opportunity to share the stage with current governor, Pat McCrory, another vocal critic of the University leadership role in resisting changes in higher education in North Carolina, the former governor may have received for his “diplomatic efforts”…
What is clear is that a swift and fair resolution of the ‘current unpleasantness’, as Bob Lee likes to call it, which includes vacating a number of championships in all affected sports and removal of certain banners from the Dean Dome would most certainly be a great service to humanity and an political accomplishment that old Tuliplips would truly treasure.
On a more humorous note to some… Governor McCrory, quoting another well known, former NC State student, William C. Friday, told the loyal and faithful in light blue that night…:
“People don’t want their lifetimes to be measured by how much their football team won or lost.”.
