The fact that Doeren hasn’t made chicken salad out of INHERITED chicken shit does not mean he won’t be able to coach the competitive talent he brings in. They are completely different skill sets, and the correlation factor is low.

Great point BJD. Market indeed spoke. Charlottesville ain’t such a bad place to kick back and relax though. Joke’s on London.

Remember how bad Mack Brown’s first two teams were? Certainly had no correlation to his program building ability.

Bucks and Turkeys now tied. Heels up on the Aztecs in Saturday night thriller in Chapel Hill.

Are we comparing Mack Brown to Doofus now? Surely the Mack Brown of nearly 30 years ago wasn’t running his team like a video game!

Haha, I always hate the K analogy too. But you really can fix hoops with one recruiting class, and talent differential is more predictive in football.

Even then, I would always give a new hoops coach 3 years, minimum.

I’m saying plenty of program builders have looked clueless with inherited, shit talent.

Plenty of converse examples, too. Guys who overachieved early with subpar talent, but who couldn’t build a program.

Brissett has played a very good game today.

I respect what you are saying BJD, but strictly speaking to probability… Mack Brown is what you would consider a pretty significant outlier. Just like coach K was. How many coaches are going to go 2-20 (or whatever his 1st two year record was) and turn out to be a Mack Brown?

I’ve seen enough besercko play calling to highly suspect Doofus is in quite a bit over his head. We’ll have obviously have to wait a couple more years to begin the real building. Unless we do indeed have ourselves the next Mack Brown.

Petrino certainly looks like he has picked up right where he left off. Probably out drinking at the bar scouting his next coed as we speak.

I’m saying, there is usually some progress at least in the 2nd season with solid rebuilding coaches. It appears we may have somehow actually regressed from the sh!t pile that we were last season.

I hear Mack is looking for a place to live. Doeren ought to invite him over to stay for a few weeks. Certainly couldn’t hurt.

Hey, were going to be 2-0, so the sky isn’t falling, yet. Let’s see if we can win a few more.

    Wat.

    You sure? I’m not sure.

I wouldn’t say he’s anything like the next mack Brown. Just that we don’t know yet. I do think the sample size is large enough to say there is little correlation between overachieving early and program building.

You have to do REALLY badly not to get 4 years in football. But of course 0-for-ACC qualifies as really bad. That means he does need to show me something in year 3.

I am also requiring Doeren to achieve a year ahead of Cutcliffe’s pace at Duke.

QB play alone is miles better. That ought to be good enough for at least another win or two. Remember, this is the ACC.

    Wat.

    You sure? I’m not sure.

Let me break it down for you. Can you find me another coach that won 1 game in each of his 1st two seasons and went on to be a great coach?

There might be, but I bet there aren’t many. That’s what a statistical outlier is.

We won 3 last year….I don’t get it.

And, I’m not saying 3 is great, but still.

A graphic at the beginning of the game confirms BJD’s point regarding next year being Doeren’s true test. We started the 2nd most freshmen last season. The fact that so many freshmen this year are getting significant playing time tells you that we have a serious talent/depth deficiency. His play-calling is worthy of criticism, but I’m not willing two games into this season to throw in the towel. We have three absolute, dead-on losses coming (FSU, Clemson and UL). Everything else is a toss-up, and a bowl appearance after last season is a sure sign of solid progress.

Two favorite things in tonight’s game: 1) Angela Mallen’s hot lisp and 2) The ‘Full’ Monte Nelson!!

I’m not saying it’s likely, but we had a shot against Clemson last year before the refs screwed us out of a touchdown. We’re better this year than last year.
