Will wonders ever cease? Outside the Lines will run a report this evening on ESPNnews at 6pm. The question will be if the report will be designed to g

01/14/2014 at 4:34 PM #36860MrPlywoodParticipantSomeone should let Skipper know that there’s a big difference between “earning” your degree and “receiving” your degree.
And they’re still beating that drum, with Hairston’s latest quote: “I am excited to continue to pursue my degree at UNC while also pursing my dream of becoming a professional basketball player,” Hairston said.
01/14/2014 at 5:12 PM #36864bill.onthebeachParticipant…57…
I’m with you… will be watching closely to gauge the direction of the eSPIN…
And then perhaps…. the reSPIN tomorrow might be even more interesting…
when the radio guys use this to fill in an otherwise slow news day.And it may not matter… noise is noise and there is no such thing as bad noise, especially in this case.
#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!01/14/2014 at 5:19 PM #36865tmb81ParticipantI am anticipating this will be a variation of the EDI excuse with rehashes of other notable cases, e.g. Dexter Manley. It would surprise me if new information is presented, or if an embedded reporter is working the story. This is their “golden goose” after all.
01/14/2014 at 5:25 PM #36866MrPlywoodParticipantI can hear the victim angle now…
“Even the hallowed University of North Carolina, the flagship of the UNC system with standards so high the institution became known as the nation’s preeminent ‘public Ivy’, has succumbed to the unending pressure of the need to succeed on the playing field. The reputation of this fine center of higher learning has been compromised and sullied by a few wayward rogues and is a wake-up call to the UNC system, if not the entire country’s educational system. Our thoughts and prayers go with the hardworking administrators, professors and coaches at UNC who over the years have strived to do things the right way, ‘The Carolina Way’.”
01/14/2014 at 6:09 PM #36867Alpha WolfKeymaster“I think my job has been in danger since the original scandal broke out here.” Mary Willingham. She also thanked Dan Kane for excellent coverage.
“It’s just wrong.” Mary Willingham.
01/14/2014 at 6:12 PM #36868Alpha WolfKeymaster“I worked in the department from 2003 to 2010…and I am very familiar with the paper class program.”
“Yes, we directed [athletes] to the paper class program….the administration knew they existed.”
“It is..not reflected in the university report.”
Mary Willingham.
01/14/2014 at 6:13 PM #36869Alpha WolfKeymaster“The team and the players are insulated [from the scandal]” C.L. Brown, the Drake Group
01/14/2014 at 6:16 PM #36871Alpha WolfKeymaster“The NCAA are looking away, they have punished other schools for much less” … “they have not taken action to investigate academic fraud at North Carolina and have accepted the whitewash report from the [university.]” David Ridpath, professor at Ohio University

01/14/2014 at 6:35 PM #36874SaccoVParticipantWell, kudos is deserved to ESPN for running the real story. Also, I hope that Dan Kane has trademarked his name because it was used so many times during this broadcast that he deserves royalties!! ‘Proud’ Mary and ‘Citizen’ Kane walked the dog on Roy (whose name now must be pronounced with the French ‘wah’) and Bubba C!!
01/14/2014 at 6:39 PM #36875elvislivesParticipantThey had enough material and guests (5 people total) to have presented a full hour on the topic. Hopefully this will “leave them wanting more”…
01/14/2014 at 6:57 PM #36876idrive67elkyParticipantWill this be replayed later (without editing), or available online or on watchespn? 6pm is a hardhard time to catch.
01/14/2014 at 7:01 PM #36877elvislivesParticipantTry this
http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/EDIT – Since it just premiered at 6PM ET it might take a minute for them to post the link.
01/14/2014 at 7:31 PM #36878tractor57Participant“video no longer available”
01/14/2014 at 7:33 PM #36880bill.onthebeachParticipantHackers…. huh ???

#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!01/14/2014 at 7:40 PM #36881MrPlywoodParticipantAlpha are those quotes from the show? I get most ESPN online content up here, but have a feeling this one will be blocked. TSN might actually run this show.
01/14/2014 at 7:51 PM #36882wilmwolf80ParticipantIt was a hard hitting piece, but its impact is still questionable. I, for one, am not going to pat them on the back just yet. They are several years late to this story, and airing one ten minute segment on ESPNnews at 6PM is FAR from giving this story the attention it deserves. I understand why people are happy that this has come out, I’m just not willing to throw the party just yet.
01/14/2014 at 8:13 PM #36883WulfpackParticipantYou can also now download the podcast on itunes. Good piece.
01/14/2014 at 8:15 PM #36884elvislivesParticipantOutside the Lines will post the link to the video by Friday. *rimshot*
While you guys wait for the video, they did post the podcast if you’re dying for the audio.
http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=1029396801/14/2014 at 8:35 PM #36885JKLParticipantFOR THE LIFE OF ME… I cannot understand what else the NCAA needs to come down on UNC for the academics scandal!
Exhibit A – Afro American department guilty of offering fraudulent, no show classes and hundreds un-authorized grade changes. Men’s BBall and Football players make up a disproportionately large percentage of enrollments.
Exhibit B – Former academic advisor for athletics “Yes, we directed [athletes] to the paper class program….the administration knew they existed.”
I don’t see this going away for UNC without the NCAA ruling/ commenting publicly. Regional news is one thing, but there’s too much national press for this to just go away.
01/14/2014 at 8:39 PM #36886WulfpackParticipantRoy Williams said “it is not my world” to determine whether his players can read or not. Sad state of affairs, folks.
01/14/2014 at 8:58 PM #36887tractor57ParticipantAnd Valvano was fried over some shoe sales …
01/14/2014 at 9:29 PM #36893choppack1ParticipantFinally ESPN acts.
There are a lot of local journalists and “leaders” in this state who had a chance to show some integrity and blew it. Thank you Dan kane and jay smith and Mary willingham and even Bob Lee…as for everyone in leadership positions at our fine school with exception to tob, shame on you.
