Haven’t seen anything posted but thought the community here might want to be made aware of some recent events regarding one of our baseball alumni.
Corey Mattison, a Burlington native, and pitcher for Williams High School and NC State in the late 90s-2000s, was killed in a domestic incident last Friday. He had recently remarried and was living in Northern Virginia. Apparently the (“alleged”) killer, his wife’s ex-husband, broke into their home and started shooting. By all accounts, Corey led the shooter away from the two children that were at home with him at the time into the garage. The children locked themselves into a bathroom and called 911. The wife came home about this time with another of the kids while this was unfolding.
The killer was taken into custody at the scene. Apparently his mother was fighting with him over control of the gun when deputies arrived.
The killer was reputed to be a tech mogul who had co-founded Plaxo with Sean Parker. However, events in the last few days have revealed that the people that founded Plaxo have never even met this man. They would remove his name from the Wikipedia entry for Plaxo and, in short order, the killer would put his name back in as a co-founder. Eventually the Plaxo people gave up. In short, he is a fraud.
Because of the reputed resume of the killer, the story gained national traction. Within a few days, CNBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, the New York Daily News, and the London Daily Mail picked it up. No one bothered to check the credentials of the killer.
DCInno.com broke the story early, and was one of the first to admit that the killer was a fraud when facts came to light.
Having said all this: there have been a nice set of stories about Corey; what a great guy he was and how he acted heroically to save his children and stepchildren.
Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. There is a gofundme.com website (will not post a link here, it’s easy enough to find if you are interested) where you can help the family out financially.
Notable achievements I know of Corey’s career at NC State include beating Virginia in the ACC Tournament in the quarterfinals back in 2001.

I had heard about this, but hadn’t had the chance to dig and hadn’t heard many of the details you’ve provided.
Very tragic indeed.
