OK,
Maybe I am cracking up….and I waited a while for SFN to have some info. I was checking the N&O this PM for some news. The Headline was “Coach Williams calls Timeout to prevent KY rout” That was the gist. SO, I turned on the TV.It was about 5 minutes or so into the 2nd Half. The score was 64 – 52 favor KY. The commentators, Marv Albert and Greg Anthony, were in full Ad Lib and Philosophize mode. In other words, the game was so boring that they were just making comments and not really trying to get folks “into the action” or calling for a comeback.
They were commenting on the Academic Scandal and Abuses at UNC. They rattled on for a few minutes. SAD was the common phrase. Their comments were really NEGATIVE and THEY talked about how it could impact the future of UNC BB and recruiting. Now these are talking heads, but their comments were pretty good and pointed. I laughed about it and thought…..How is this going to play in CH and the ACC Commish’s office?
Cut to commercial….then come back. Immediately they comment that their PREVIOUS dialog was probably inappropriate. That ORW was a coach of impeccable credentials and he was at KU when the “alleged” issues began and then they spouted his W/L record, two rings, how many times he had been to the NCAA and the Final Four. It was a Mea Culpa that would make Trent Lott’s look like a NYC apology.
About that time, my wife walked in and sat down and caught the last comments about Boy Scout ORW and such. She looked at me and said “What a bunch of Bull $hit”… She laughed and said it sounded like a PR firm had written their copy.
OK…we both heard it….and we had not had our 5:00 adult beverage. I mentioned this to a UNC guy and he had given up watching the carnage of the KY team. Almost hinted that I had NOT heard such.
The MORE I think about it, it seems that SOMEONE called CBS and really tore into them and the they were patched directly to the KY Remote and Marv and Greg got an earful….as well as some stats to repeat. From WHAT I remember, the ACC Commish has a “Video Central” or intersanctum in Greensboro. It is so high tech that the CIA is trying to get the plans. SO, they DO have a direct line to each network’s Master Control when it is covering an ACC Game. This room and their “war room” or situation control technology has been widely discussed in the media.
I guess that I am a really paranoid Wuffie. I understand HOW the mind of the Talking Head (On Air Talent or OAT) works…. It is just a “Repeater”. It repeats what the producers of the “editor” tells them to say. Now, don’t get me wrong…it is tough to form complete sentences and then add in the comments. BUT, these folks RARELY have an original thought….
Later on, ORW had a Vertigo attack. You would have thought that he needed a AFIB unit and the announcers were calling for the EMS. They even circled his position on the replay. I have seen him have issues and can not get back up….I don’t know if the additional stress of this year and Cal’s thumping of his platoons impacted the severity of the attack. And I certainly do NOT want ORW to have any health issues. That is not something that I would or think that any ABC’er would stoop to.
But, it DID tell me that Marv and Greg were “winging it” and did not know the nuances of ORW’s health and his occasional “Help ME….I’ve squatted and I can’t get up” episodes.
I personally think that the Commish or one of his high ranking (and highly compensated) lieutenants started grabbing the Light Blue phone when the word SAD and SCANDAL and UNC were mentioned….
SO…all you techies out there…..did ANYONE happen to DVR the UNC Game? I keep waiting to read the transcript…
Did ANYONE ELSE see it and can you fill in some of the blanks….
12/14/2014 at 8:06 AM #65221TheCOWDOGModeratorCBS has a vested interest in college basketball, a la The Tournanent.
If a call was put in the ears of the on air talent, it came directly from CBS, IMO.
The ACC wouldn’t have to lift a finger. I can think of hundreds of million reasons why CBS would not appreciate the submarining of a product.
12/14/2014 at 8:10 AM #65222Pack78ParticipantRoo-I watched the beatdown and heard Anthony’s comments on Saint ORW-yelled a few expletives and muted the sound at that point until near the end of the game-only difference with Soviet Russia is that he would be off to the Gulug that afternoon for the original comments.
12/14/2014 at 8:36 AM #65223AdventurooParticipantOK….I had to have my PC sterilized and wore a hazmat suit….but I did it.
If you go to the public forums in both PackPride and InsideCarolina….then you get some comments. Approximately 1:43 when the score was 64 – 52, Marv and Greg came out of a break. UNC was on the ropes and they started their little “ad lib” session. The tone of those remarks was very “ANTI” UNC and Coach Williams. Again, SAD was one of the words that I picked up. I have yet to find a video of the game. But, the banter went on from one break to the other.
When they came back from commercial, that was when the apologies started and the Mea Culpa’s.
Cowdog, YES….I fully agree that CBS has a major vested interest and that someone realized that Marv and Greg had stepped over the PC line. However, I do not think that the Executive Producer (Staff) at CBS is really that smart or that all knowing.
If you go here…..this is a description of the “ACC Media Monitoring Facility”
http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/77604/saturday-with-swofford-inside-acc-ops-center
I used to work at WRAL and there was a “HOT LINE” next to the “producer” that was responsible for the ON AIR signal in the Master Control Room. It was a direct dial phone and it rang and a “strobe” flashed underneath the Main On Air signal monitor.
That number was only distributed to a few select folks….Fred Fletcher (CEO of Capital Broadcasting), Jesse Helms (VP at that time) and about 5 other folks who were high ranking WRAL execs. When it rang….you answered….or you were fired….this is Circa 1964…I will not go into detail about how a private porn video viewing in the VTR area was accidentally “aired” for 10 seconds and the phone rang and it was Fred and the tumult afterwards cost some jobs….but it was in place locally then.
Whether there is a Light Blue hot line next to John Swofford’s chair or whether he had CBS Master Control on his cell phone speed dial is pure speculation. But, I sincerely believe that the ACC HQ does have a direct line to the production control room (the remote set-up) and that any “objectionable” comments or info can be immediately refuted and “handled”. UNC probably does get preferential treatment….DUH….even Larry the Hat says that John pulls for UNC.
However, the ACC HQ, is a business also and it has vested interests in maintaining the value of it’s product.
Marv and Greg reversed their field so quickly and had some MANY “facts” that were seemingly no available to them in the first segment that one has to speculate that the ACC guru’s were spouting them so that the producer was pouring them into Marv and Greg’s head.
After my little “time stamp” and comments searches last night, I now know that I was NOT hallucinating….and it probably happened as I speculated.
There appears to be no early fallout this AM….so folks that watched UNC get thumped are focusing more on Coach’s Bull $hit comment on LIVE Radio rather than how he was convicted in one segment and exonerated and give a “hero medal” in the other.
This appears to have little traction….but it does show the interworkings of the ACC….
12/14/2014 at 12:51 PM #65228PackerInRussiaParticipantI saw the game and heard the comments and was waiting for someone on here to talk about them. Before the break, one of the announcers says something about how he wants to comment on the situation. I was waiting for him to also get a few jabs in, but when they came back, he just wanted to talk about what a hero Roy is. They also seemed to imply (or maybe it was stated directly) that the program had suffered enough and taken steps to deal with the problem – people had been fired, recruits had been lost. So, let’s not act like nothing has been done about it. Thus, the UNC angle was “fairly” presented. It was such a joke. Forget that multiple championships were won (ACC and national) during all of this crap. A few people have been fired and they’ve lost recruits. Let’s not react too harshly.
It was no wonder that Roy had to kneel down. He probably collapsed under the weight of all the praise being heaped on him. These coaches that have to maneuver their teams through scandals are heroes and saints. The guy doesn’t get enough credit; certainly not enough blame.12/14/2014 at 6:38 PM #65343bill.onthebeachParticipant.. speaking of some SAD guys…
there’s plenty of wailing and gnashing of teeth over at Idiot Central…
not so much over the loss to Calipari’s semi pro team… which most expected…
but over the reality of the impact of the FIVE year scandal…
and the still uncertain litigious future …Comments like…
“Time for Roy to go..”
“Roy can’t recruit against the Elite schools (Dook, Kentucky, Kansas) because his kids have to go to class…”
“We can’t get the players we used to get… ”
“Larry Drew II was right… and we should have paid more attention to that…”etc, etc, etc…
Speaks volumes…
#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!12/20/2014 at 4:16 PM #65848StateFansKeymasterI am so glad that I read this thread. I was tied up on Saturday and didn’t get to see/hear any of this. None of this surprises me in the least.
12/30/2014 at 11:16 PM #67483WoofiePParticipantI’m just wondering how we can petition the N&O to start investigating Wofford for any kind of violations. I mean, they beat us, they have to be paying their players. Am I right?
