according to WPC donor statistics posted on the monkey board some time ago, we had something like 39 donors in the entire WPC giving more than $12,000 a year. Let that sink in. In an era where more well heeled universities launch multi-Billion dollar fundraising campaigns, out of our over 100,000 living alumni, there are only 39 people who think enough about Pack sports to donate $1000 a month or more. One of those people is worth 100 people who we get to join at that minimum $120 a year level. And illustrates why the “we’ve got 20,000 people in the WPC, we’re in the top tier in the ACC in fan support” is such a myth.
That, in a nutshell, is one reason for our lack of success over the last two decades. When the world of college athletics went big money, we simply could not keep up. And it shows, from the “performance” of the womens soccer team (a stretch to call it a performance, more like a debacle), to the poor results we show in football playing peer universities. Until we have a MUCH larger group of large money donors, we will be perpetually in catch-up mode in the ACC. One guy at Virginia wrote a $25 million check to renovate Scott Stadium when they were actually doing well 18 years ago. What’s the largest one time gift we’ve ever gotten?

For decades, such folks were not only NOT actively cultivated, but they were eschewed by the University leadership who liked to fashion themselves as purest ‘elites’, all the while they fattened their own personal bank accounts via graft and political corruption as long as they maintained the status quo and did not rock the boat.
u*nc is in a class by itself with its institutionalize corruption. But at least over there, it was corruption to forward the betterment (as they saw it) of the university. At NC State, the corruption structured for personal enrichment, at the expense of the university.

I used to give close to (but not quite) five figures yearly. Early in my professional career this was not a breeze. And for a while I continued even after leaving the area when season tix priority was no longer even an issue.
And while the reasons I stopped giving at that level were not solely to do with disgust for previous regimes, I haven’t been in a huge hurry to resume even though I’m back in the area now.
Yow and Co. have almost convinced me it be worth it, however.
Having said that, I am worth more to the Vet School dead than alive as my life insurance is now set up.

The last two games have been disappointing, but forgetting the VT game, we certainly had our chances with Louisville, who again only lost by 3 to undefeated Clemson, in death valley. The possibilities are there, but we have to use the element of surprise, with our offense, as our last two opponents stated they knew the plays we were gonna run. That is fine if we can’t be stopped, but if they do stop it, then what. Canada has to do a better job coaching the offense, so the defense is not on the field so much for us. And our OL has got to given JB more time, as well as better throwing choices by JB, by checking down and finding the best option. I am heading to WF, where we have struggled, but hopefully we will be victorious, especially with our large fan base present at the game. Go Pack!

We had our chances against Louisville because they couldn’t catch a cold. They absolutely kicked our teeth in.
That said, I trust this staff to get us focused and turned around over the bye.
For the record, the Louisville-Clemson game was at Louisville, not Clemson.
I’m less bothered by the Louisville loss than I am how we responded after it at Virginia Tech.
To the folks wondering about coaching, did you ever think that maybe they’re doing what they can with what they got? Not saying our players are bad, but we’re not elite. Coaches will recognize what they do best and call to their strengths. I don’t think any of our coaches are trying to be fired by going predictable or conservative without reason. Got to give these guys a real chance to build this program. Talk about firing Doreen or any coordinator needs to be backed up with a significant WPC donation, otherwise STFU.

LRM, I stand corrected, but never the less Louisville had the chances to defeat Clemson, at home, so why shouldn’t we have the same chance. Even though I may question coaching, I am not calling for anyone’s job. But I do however believe we have a very talented team, capable of doing more than I have seen the last two weeks. Perhaps the easy games up front set us up for this. Time to take a week off and correct our issues. May we have a happy Halloween!

Our two game losing streak is a sure sign that our new IPF has been a jinx. Not its fault…. It has only been used this season and already the viral “Curse of Jimmy V” has been transmitted from CF and the PNC to the new building.
One would think that having a College of Engineering with one of the PREMIER EE programs in the world, that our hot shot electrical whizzes could come up with a high powered diode that would prevent the “electronic virus” from getting in the new building. It HAD to come in via the power grid….which is common to all the facilities at the sub station.
We need to have a ceremony this weekend (probably at midnight….after a few hours of tailgating). It must be held in each of the aforementioned facilities.
We need to appease the spirit of Jimmy V. The lack of recognition for what he did for the BB program is ominous in the PNC….and that evil spirit lurks in the Murphy Center and CF and shows its ugly head at the most inappropriate time.

Witchita State just paid $3.3M for Marshall which is 50% more than we pay Gott. It represents 15% of their athletics budget. That’s all in.
Smart just agreed to $3.1M average over 7 years at UT plus bonuses. He made $1.8M at VCU.
Now, that’s not to say that we should go and pay Gott 15% of our budget and expect we’d see better results. You can look at that list and see a Crean or a JT3 who make more but haven’t delivered more. Money doesn’t guarantee success.
It’s just to say that I don’t think we’re really all in for basketball. We’ve upped our game, but if we want to get to the promised land, there are seemingly a lot of programs ahead of us in this list, and those are the programs we’re competing with in the ACC, NCAAs, etc..
We have Gott under contract, and there is no reason to believe he is going anywhere, so no need to give him a raise today. So if we were to spend more money on basketball, what is it that we lack? I don’t perceive that we short our recruiting budget. I don’t perceive that we lack facilities. We are apparently going to build a new state of the art basketball dorm already.
I’m just not getting exactly what we would spend more money on to move from not being “all in” to being “all in”. I guess I don’t see that your statements on this really hold water. To put it another way, we could just bump Gott’s salary up enough to put us “all in” in your way of thinking, but we’d have the same coaches, facilities, etc. Why would the money spent in that situation make any difference?
It seems what you are really saying is that if we were “all in” we would pay a high enough salary to draw a higher quality coach (and staff). But, frankly, I’d rather have Gott than Marshall or Smart. Am I in the minority on that?

Chargers lose, again. On the last play. Wish Rivers could move on for one last shot but it isn’t happening.
Two frustrating losses. There seems to be so many holes to plug:
– Wide receivers can’t get separation
– Jacoby not looking their way when they do
– Jacoby getting pressured on virtually every pass
– Our D line not getting any pressure on the other QB, regardless of the opponent
– Last year Grinnage looked to be a star in the making. What happened? Injured early on, but is 100% now
– Odd play calling
– Dumb penalties
– Soft defenseLast year the coach showed an ability to make adjustments during the bye week, and there were even more holes to plug than this year. I think we will see more aggressive play calling on both sides of the ball from here on out. The dink and dunk on offense, and the “bend but don’t break” defense clearly aren’t working. I just wish it wouldn’t take a bye week to figure that out.

If you look back at that search we heard money’d be no object. Then we were outbid by Zona, put out something with VCU that they could get close enough to match that the risk of the move wasn’t worth it, and we had some sort of personality issue with GM (which I’d heard from some who have been consistently right was over his asking salary).
As to the GM question, I’d rather have him. He’s done more with less at WS. Put him with a great recruiting assistant to get the talent in and we could have been regularly ranked in the top 15 or so the last few years. To me, that’s the next step for this program.
