I watched the scrimmage on replay. I’ve been watching these preaseason things for close to 20 years now. We’ve never had the talent and depth that this team does. If everyone is cleared and stays healthy, the goal should be Final Four or bust.

ACC finish around 5th with 5 or 6 conference losses; no more than 2 OOC losses.10/24/2016 at 11:41 AM #108795pakfanistanParticipant“We’ve never had the talent and depth that this team does” – i assume you mean this coach hasn’t had this kind of depth and talent.

10/24/2016 at 12:59 PM #108515choppack1ParticipantRye – it isn’t that he doesn’t like zone it’s that our zone makes our man to man look like the the basketball version of the 85 Chicago Bears D. (In other words, it specialises in giving up open 3’s and offensive rebounds, while not creating turnovers.)
10/25/2016 at 12:24 AM #108818ryebreadParticipantDaniel: Let me clarify. In the 20 years I’ve been going to or watching the Red and White scrimmages, this is the most talented and deep we have looked. Will everyone get cleared? I don’t know, but if they do and everyone stays healthy, we have the potential to be very good. We have the best PG combo that I can remember at State, a couple of guys who can score from the perimeter, a very smart center who can do a lot of things, and both Kirk and Anya look improved. Now it is up to the staff to coach them.
Chop: Touché. 😉 One can only hope we turn the defense over to Schroyer. That defense definitely works.
10/25/2016 at 9:44 AM #108821RickKeymasterApparently coaches don’t expect much from us. Not a single vote. 11 other ACC teams received votes. NCSU not a single one.

16 days before game 1 and still no answer. We’ll probably get the verdict on March 2nd.

http://sportspolls.usatoday.com/ncaa/basketball-men/polls/coaches-poll/2016/1/it does seem odd that the polls (especially one done by program votes) can’t place the Pack squad in 25. It has to be that the overall picture on the Pack is just an “‘unknown’ wildcard” because there is absolutely no denying the accumulation of talent.
I’m with the previous posters who point to defense. If this group motivates to play both ends of the floor there will be some fun nights come March and …
10/25/2016 at 2:14 PM #108826gso packbackerParticipantI am curious to see what the ACC Media has to say when they release their poll. I put very little stock into it, other than to know that we will not end up where they predict us to finish. So, without even seeing it I say we finish EITHER +3 or -3 slots from wherever they say.
Further, I predict they have us 8th or 9th as they probably don’t see the Big Y getting cleared anytime soon either, yet feel Gott has a fire lit under him to get results NOW.
In this conference for this year, I would be pleased with 6th place. On the flip side, finishing 12th without extenuating circumstances will get him sent packing.
10/25/2016 at 2:18 PM #108827gso packbackerParticipantRegarding the coaches poll, let’s assume they had an accurate idea of every other team BUT us.
We would have to be among the 6th best teams in the ACC to crack that poll. I like our upside, but I don’t think I would vote us 6th in the ACC at this moment.
10/25/2016 at 4:04 PM #108828PackerInRussiaParticipantRe: the polls.
I had also noticed the complete lack of votes. I was not surprised that they were not in the Top 25. I was surprised that they did not receive even a single vote. I am glad that people are not giving them some really high ranking based on the hype of certain players. I’d rather them surprise people than have to live up to hype.10/25/2016 at 6:09 PM #108837TheAliasTrollParticipantIn this conference for this year, I would be pleased with 6th place. I can guarantee you right now this team will not finish 12th without extenuating circumstances (I assume you mean injuries). And 6th place would be a huge disappointment in my opinion, enough to send him packing. The talent is here.
This team is WAAAY under rated and deep. You’ll see us pushing tempo hard with this much depth and easily an NBA lottery pick (I personally think he’ll be #1 pick in the draft) running point. Rest assured, Dennis Smith Jr. is the real deal.
10/25/2016 at 6:12 PM #108838packalum44ParticipantAn easier question to answer is: will Gott under or over-achieve based on the team’s talent differential?
Sadly even the most handicapped of armchair analyst can answer this without hesitation and high conviction.
He’s better than Herb and Sid at least. We could do worse.
10/25/2016 at 6:19 PM #108839pakfanistanParticipantWe could do worse.
I nominate that for NC State’s new slogan.
10/25/2016 at 6:52 PM #108840choppack1ParticipantSo true Packfanistan, so true.
The sad part, usually – we do take a nice step back, at least in short term.

I nominate that for NC State’s new slogan. How about: “We might not win but we don’t play defense.”
10/25/2016 at 7:14 PM #108843TheCOWDOGModeratorWanna little perspective?
I had breakfast this morning with a recently inducted NC State HoF basketball coach. He finally gets around to asking me what I know/expect for this year’s club. I told him that I was gonna ask him the same thing.
We kinda’ looked at each other, stupid-like, and grinned.
10/25/2016 at 7:39 PM #108844bill.onthebeachParticipant^this says it all…
should be a “fun” season to watch…
if you understand, there’s not enough letters in “fun” to fully articulate the range of emotions we’ll “enjoy” between now and the end of March….#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!10/25/2016 at 7:56 PM #108845AdventurooParticipantI posted earlier, but I guess it got “lost”. What concerns me is the lack of any solid “Defensive Genius” in the accolades about our two new hires. Bobby Lutz (now with the Windy City NBDL….what a name for a team with the political acumen of Chicago…) was supposed to be the Robin to Batman’s Offense….that would “watch his back”. That obviously didn’t happen…and the two were about as close as DD and QB.
CD’s comment is priceless. The HOF Coach was recently (before he retired) part of the Coach’s Poll committee. Seems to me that he SHOULD have some insight…and if HE is in the dark or does not have any “feelings”, then that about says it all.
We should be (and the Turk SHOULD be cleared by mid December unless there were some really BIG payoff’s) great on the O end….assuming that none of them are Whit’s and no one will pass. BUT, what happens when we get hammered on the D end. I still remember how Mikey figured out the scheme to launch the JJ Reddick barrage. THAT derailed our chance at an ACC Championship. When asked … why didn’t you use a Junk Defense on him, HWWNBSOHA said, with us usual High IQ (but not BB) arrogance….”We never practiced such….next question….”.
I fear that we will see some JUNK thrown at us and we will NOT have any JUNK to throw back.
BUT, who knows.
CD, thanks for that tidbit….it speaks volumes….My old Freshman Platoon Sargeant SHOULD know about our “potential…”

#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!10/26/2016 at 8:51 AM #108856choppack1ParticipantI am more worried about the chemistry of the team. Lots of good college players and 2 lottery picks.
Defense will always be a concern with Gott. However, imho, our key is rebounding. If we can keep teams off the offensive boards and avoid stupid fouls, we will be fine.
This year will tell us a lot about Gott’s ceiling. He has secured talent not seen in these parts for quite a while.
10/26/2016 at 10:34 AM #108859RickKeymasterThis year will tell us a lot about Gott’s ceiling. He has secured talent not seen in these parts for quite a while.
Guarded optimism from me.
10/26/2016 at 12:14 PM #108863Whiteshoes67ParticipantI’m excited. I think we may be slow out of the gate but come on strong if everyone is healthy and eligible. For me, there are plenty of known factors. We’ll score it well. We won’t be great on defense. We should be competitive and have a chance in most games.
The unknowns for me:
1. How well will each player accept his roll? Does the staff communicate this effectively so that everyone buys in?
2. Has the depth actually created a culture of competition, and will the staff reward players who compete on both ends of the court with playing time?
3. Will Gott speed up the tempo to play to his strength–offense? Or will we play slow, and not maximize depth and his strengths, a very frustrating hallmark of his tenure, both here and at Bama.
4. How hungry are we? Gott’s teams won’t be great on defense, but one of the reasons I’m very optimistic is that this roster has the look of Year 1, with far more talent and depth, and that roster was his best on defense (even with CJL and Wood) than all others because they played hungry, especially down the stretch in ACC and NCAA play. That hunger and talent hasn’t been replicated since. With a roster consisting of a transfer that sat a year, a guy coming back from an injury who sat 2 years, a potential lottery pick who sat due to an injury, a couple of international players, and some real skill, this team could be very hungry and dangerous. When we hongry, we eat.10/26/2016 at 1:10 PM #108865choppack1ParticipantWhiteshoes – one of the best ways to pick up the pace is with pressure defense. If you don’t pressure on D, you don’t create turnovers and you are more likely to encounter a set defense which prevents transition buckets which are the easiest in basketball.
Gottfried’s half court sets are pretty good. But I think we’d all like to see better defense and see our d generate more to’s.
10/26/2016 at 3:03 PM #108866BJD95KeymasterWe need hunger and better spacing. We need our man GFK to start feelin’ (and listenin’ to) his inner Rodney Monroe. We need GLUE. We need the proper timing for the mix to come out of the oven right, too.
