No, it was not the breakaway foul on Warren in the last minute of the State-Syracuse game. It was in the Duke-Maryland game. And guess who the call was in favor of…Maryland. Please, no way. Duke was on the right side of the officiating blunder. The refs missed a simple possession arrow.
The ACC on Sunday acknowledged that officials failed to change the possession arrow in the second half of Saturday’s Maryland-Duke game.
The conference said “a miscommunication occurred between the officials and the table crew” that led to Duke retaining the possession arrow after earning possession from a jump ball with 16:58 left in the game.
The next tie-up came with 6:39 to go and Maryland leading 56-54. Instead of giving the ball to the Terrapins, the arrow allowed Duke to keep possession. The Blue Devils’ Amile Jefferson scored on a layup from the ensuing inbound pass to tie the score.
Duke went on to win 69-67 after Maryland forward Charles Mitchell’s shot in the final seconds fell off the rim.
“The matter has been and will be handled internally by the league office,” the ACC said in a statement.
I wonder what “will be handled internally” means? 2 thumbs up? A raise for the officials who “messed up?”
