Early one Tuesday morning, I got up around 5am, s-s-s + coffee and headed up thru the country, getting on Hwy 29 in Lynchburg on the way to Charlottesville, Virginia for a 9:30am meeting…
I was passing Wintergreen and the Rockfish Valley on the left, when the radio went dead and then the news guys beeped in… Reports were scattered, inconsistently troubling and reporters mostly incoherent…
I drove on up to Charlottesville and stopped at the first decent place to get another cup of coffee and the TV was on there…
September 11, 2001…
Now you ought to remember that Charlottesville is only an hour or so the fast way from DC… and the connection between the folks in Charlottesville with those in DC was as thick as a bridge cable on the Golden Gate…. Fear of the unknown is the best way to describe it, I suppose….
I made that meeting and then went around town to several more as I had planned a full day of work. Everywhere, the mood of the people that day was eerie… we worked, but nobody was 100%. Fear of the unknown, I suppose….
As details of the morning’s disasters trickled in, nothing changed… Fear of the unknown, I suppose….
Around 5pm… I headed back home down Hwy29 to North Carolina. Truth is, when I crossed the state line just this side of South Boston, I felt safer. Fear of the unknown, I suppose….
Now I’ve been back to Charlottesville many times — always enjoyed the Mr. Jefferson’s quaint little village, but I ain’t forgot that September Tuesday morning either.
Now the WOLFPACK is making that same trip up and down Hwy 29 today, but under much different circumstances… Basketball heroics in no ways should be compared to 911.

Yurt covered the entire court just to foul the three point shooter. The basics of man-ball-basket are completely missing. UVA is taking shots without anybody in the same zip code as the shooter.
