Nebraska Gives AD Extension

LINCOLN, Neb.– Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson, praised by some and derided by others for quickly remolding Cornhusker football after coming to town five years ago, has agreed to terms of a five-year contract extension.

The contract finalized last week will pay Pederson $500,000 annually beginning next year, and includes $50,000 for media appearances. That represents a 16 percent pay raise for Pederson, who currently makes $429,837, of which $35,000 is for media appearances, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman said. Pederson will also be eligible for annual bonuses and pay hikes, opportunities that exist in his current contract.

How does one even go about working on a career path to being an AD? That’s a lot of money, and if Fowler can do it…

What other major university would Foulup be AD than NCSU!

Pederson has a very good track record of coaching hires. However, he really needs a breakout year in football pretty soon. He fired Frank Solich after he went 10 – 3 in 2003 and had an overall winning percentage of 75%. His hire, Bill Callahan has gone 5 -6, 8- 4 and 9 – 5. A 10 win season this year would show continued progress but a 7 or 8 win year will spell trouble.

Pederson’s comments about Nebraska basketball are downright heroic. Last year, the coach at Nebraska resigned (I think to take an AD job) and Pederson hired Doc Sandler, who was successful as Billy Gillispie’s replacement at UTEP. He went 15 – 14 in his first year and signed 8 new recruits. Winning big in basketball at Nebraska is probably harder than winning big at Clemson.

Jeff, this really goes along well with my writeup on our lack of conference titles under Fowler’s leadership in relation to all other BCS conference schools.

I went to the Nebraska-Kansas football game last year. They sure know how to have a great atmosphere. It is the only thing in town.

It all sounds good but except for last year’s 19-14 record they haven’t had a winning season in 2 of the past 7 years and their last 20 game winning seasons wre 98 and 99. Maybe a break out year is on the way but ……..

At $500k, I think he would be the highest paid AD in the ACC, if he were in the ACC.

AD salaries are starting up the sudden escalation path as well.

Not that I like Fowler’s peformance but you do have consider that Nebraska does not have a basketball team. Oh wait, they do actually. This guy is the AD of a powerhouse football school but he has not done anything as far as advancing the basketball program. If he had maintained the level of football performance and gained on basketball……then I would say he is a great AD. I do think that Fowler has a hired a basketball coach (but he was his 22nd choice lol) and now seems to have a solid football coach so maybe we will start to win more titles soon!

Luke, as fortunate as we, and especially the luckiest man on the planet, Lee Fowler, are to have Sidney Lowe in Raleigh right now, I’d have to actually say that your number 22 choice statement could be better summed up as Sidney Lowe being just about the very last choice that Coach Fowler had left as an option. Some people will say that we ought to get off of Fowler’s back now, due basically to his sheer luck in the cases of both coaches he now has, but I can’t give him much credit at all for either Lowe or O’Brien.

As far as Nebraska, I’m sure they would welcome some real success on the hardwood in the near future, but as far as Nebraska’s recent FB vs BB progress, they are still all about football. I’d say that back before Chuck Amato came to town, and that if NCSU had REALLY, not like Cedar says, but REALLY!!!, regained some ground on Duke and UNC in BB, that we wouldn’t be as intent on making something happen on the football field these days. Just like Nebraska, and their AD, isn’t so focused on major strides for their BB program right now.
