 John Gillon – 43 pts

Instant reactions: NC State drops overtime loss to Syracuse (NewsObserver.com)

1) John who?

John Gillon spent a year at Arkansas-Little Rock and three at Colorado State before transferring to Syracuse this year. The 6-foot point guard had played in 117 college basketball games before Wednesday night and never scored 30 points in a game.

Gillon had 43 in Syracuse’s 100-93 overtime win at N.C. State. He was an incredible 9 of 10 from the 3-point line and perfect 14 of 14 from the foul line. Gillon also threw in nine assists for good measure.

He entered the game with an 8.9 scoring average but did have 21 points and 11 assists in Syracuse’s win over Florida State on Saturday. Still, in Syracuse’s first nine ACC games, Gillon was 12 of 38 from the 3-point line. He nearly matched that total on Wednesday.

Crazy to think I’ve seen Steph Curry score 40 points here in an NCAA tournament game (on eight 3s) and Marcus Paige light the place with seven 3s in a half but Gillon’s performance topped them all.

2) Rolling hot, stopped cold

N.C. State couldn’t have played any better than it did in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Dennis Smith Jr. (15 assists) was dealing, Maverick Rowan (31 points) and Terry Henderson (16 points) were both hitting from outside and forward Abdul-Malik Abu was scoring inside.

[snip]

The problem for N.C. State is the mathematical reality of the situation. At 3-7 in the ACC, the Wolfpack is more than likely going to be playing on Tuesday in the ACC tournament. That’s not good.

There are no gimmes left and they can’t take care of business at home (losing to Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and now Syracuse). That’s not good either.

‘Nuff said.

 Miami at NC State

I don’t have much to say about Miami or this game.  We already made them look like world beaters once this season.  You ‘member that, right?

Hopefully we don’t do it again. But also we might do it again.

Three to know: Miami at N.C. State (FayObserver.com)

1. We gotta guard them, too

When the story of this season is written, the lack of improvement on the defensive end will likely be what’s pointed to as this team’s fatal flaw. It was a worry when, in nonconference play, small-conference schools kept pace with the Wolfpack and name-brand foes had scoring binges.

It’s only gotten worse in ACC play. Conference opponents are shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 42.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Wolfpack’s league foes are averaging 86 points per game.

Overall, N.C. State ranks 199th out of 351 teams in defensive efficiency according to KenPom.com.

Too often, the Wolfpack seems to lack effort when playing man-to-man and cohesion when it goes to any zone look. That showed on Wednesday night when Syracuse’s John Gillon, who scored a PNC Arena record 43 points, had no trouble getting open and almost single-handedly brought the Orange back from a 16-point hole to win 100-93 in overtime.

2. Return match

The Wolfpack and Hurricanes have already tangled once this season with Miami taking an 81-63 win on Dec. 31 in Coral Gables.

Led by forward Kamari Murphy, who had a double-double, the Hurricanes outrebounded the Wolfpack 41-33 and notched 40 points in the paint.

But the most intriguing part of the game was the matchup between Fayetteville freshman Dennis Smith Jr. and Miami’s Ja’Quan Newton. In his ACC debut, the Wolfpack’s point guard didn’t disappoint, putting up 21 points and five rebounds. But Newton was up for the challenge, registering 21 points of his own.

Miami Hurricanes at North Carolina State: Live Streaming and Game Info (CanesWarning.com)

Miami and North Carolina State previously met in the ACC opener on New Year’s Eve at the Watsco Center. The Hurricanes doubled a nine point halftime lead in the second half on their way to an 81-63 victory.

Newton lead Miami with 21, Reed had 20 and Brown 17. Kamari Murphy also finished in double figures with 11. The Hurricanes shot 47.7 percent from the floor and held NC State to 38.9 percent. The Wolfpack did make 10 of their 23 three-point attempts. Miami was also dominant on the boards with a 41-33 advantage.

Lack of scoring outside the big three and turnovers have plagued Miami all season. In the last meeting, the Hurricanes committed only eight turnovers against the Wolfpack. If they can keep the turnovers down and dominate the rebounding, they should be in the game late.

North Carolina State has great balance with five players averaging in double figures. They are led by freshman sensation Dennis Smith Jr. Smith averages 18.7 points per game, 6.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals. He is listed as the consensus fourth pick in the NBA draft in June according to NBADraft.Net.

Go Pack!!!!!

That assumes that THIS year is his last year. I have not seen the Presser on that……

Minus Men’s basketball, the women are having great season, wrestling, ranked 8th, and doing well, as well as swimming and diving. All part of State athletics. So I am not against Yow, on this one. But Gott is another story. Seems to be okay with losses, talking about how close we are to winning. Guess he thinks we care how close it is. Still a loss whether 51 or 1. Unacceptable!

Yow says she is retiring in 2019, and that has nothing to do with what is going on now. So if a coaching change is necessary, she will do what is best for the university.

I’d rather sit through two to three years of losing seasons with a young not so talented roster than watch just one more gd game where we give up 30 open, uncontested three point shots or allowing opposing team players to have career nights. Good luck in the NBA Dennis, thank you for the pack family loyalty. Yurt7, check you on a D league roster if not another D1 squad that will properly develop you (probably your better route). Malik, good luck young man, Mav…sorry bro, graduate early and get the f out that way you could play immediately somewhere and get some exposure.

Seriously, just checked the box score, seriously….Kapita and Markel played just 2 minutes each. Stellar, absolutely stellar job Gott

Its almost as if he is trying to get them to transfer

Well, that way we could be a “young team” again and BOOM! two more years in MG/DY logic…

    Actually, this is good.

For those of us who wanted clarity on what the direction of the program would be under Gott of you removed talent and depth as excuses to why he hasn’t been able to take NC State to the next level….We have it.

There’s really no reason to keep him at this point is there?

This is what his 17th season coaching in a major conference? It’s utter insanity to believe he will accomplish something he hasn’t in those 16 other seasons.

Is this something new or just previous discussion about her retirement. Is the bolded part something she actually said, or speculation on your part?

Not trying to be difficult. This would frankly be good news. I just don’t have that much faith.

Thanks for that post. I too, email here on occasion….not to discuss political issues or to exchange BBQ Sauce preferences. IT is usually about a specific situation and I offer feedback or will ask a question.

I HAVE avoided the issue with her as I did not know how sensitive that she might be. She DOES respond, as you know, almost immediately and her responses are curt and to the point.

For those that are now keeping up with the contracts. She will be Outta here mid (memory) 2019. Coach Doeren’s contract expires or runs through 12/31/2019. Coach Gottfried’s contract runs through the “END” of the 2019/20 season…..Of course, both dates are reviewed each year based on performance.

When the Coach Doeren situation came up about mid season, there was a LOT of chatter in the higher levels of the Big Donors and also the WPC members (NOT from Bobby Purcell). The consensus was that she was RELUCTANT to pull the pin on Coach Doeren and eventually she decided to give him ONE MORE SHOT.

I have NOT heard any comments, either way, from these individuals…..but I rarely see them during BB season….I drop over to their tailgates during FB season and it WAS, at the final game, a MAJOR topic….and There was little or any support for Coach Doeren. Seems like beating UNC gets you extra points or tips the scale.

I can NOT believe that Coach Gottfried has any “political capital” left. His personal issues a few years ago soured a lot of boosters and then he and EA (Baseball) becoming roomies was a concern. She, supposedly, called him into her office for a Dutch Aunt talk about his philandering and then again for his “Odd Couple” arrangement with EA. His recent heart issues was supposed to be resolved so that he could focus on his job and his GF seems to be pretty steady, so he does not have to go on sordies for relief….

NOW, I was NOT there, but the comments came from well placed sources that talk to the other coaches and members of his (Gottfried) staff.

For the team’s sake, I hope they can salvage the season. Though that may save Gottfried. I just hate it for the team to again be sitting home watching. Guess we will see. But again it is nice to have an AD, who responds to our emails, when we have concerns.

I hate it for the team but the right thing for the university is for Gott to be gone. I do not want Yow to have any excuse to keep him.

Dont forget Elizabeth kicking him out before the puerto rico trip and the assistant coaches ie. Lutz having a “come to Jesus” meeting with him or intervention if you will.

Yeah he has used up any good will previously built up among some fans and people in the administration. Its not a good look to see your bball coach drinking at bars in n raleigh.

For the team’s sake, I hope they can salvage the season.

That doesn’t seem likely. The best chances for another win this season were the two home games last week. State’s remaining home games are UNC, ND, and UVA. Road games are FSU, WF, GT, and Clemson.

State will probably win 2 of the road games, but losing out at home for a 2-7 conference mark (was Les even ever that bad at home??) seems a distinct possibility.

5-13 seems likely, 6-12 realistic best case. 7-11 would be where DY would start making excuses.

so he is at a place where he can now more than n the past focus on coaching. Hmmm …

From out past few games, it is clear, if we can learn to play the last 6-10 minutes, we have a chance of win. But that is a big IF!
