2017 Baseball Home Opener

Austin Peay invades Raleigh this weekend.

Don’t know much about ’em.  Don’t plan on doing much research on ’em either.

Thru four games in 2017, they’re 3-1 against lesser competition.  Kinda like us, actually.  But vs that lesser competition, they’ve hit the ball pretty hard thus far.

Last yr they finished 2nd in the Ohio Valley Conference.  Medium sized fish in a little pond, more or less.

Week in Review

The Pack9 took the series in Hawaii last weekend, #6 national ranking remains unchanged.

Game three nearly mirrored game one, as the Wolfpack jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, as an error and an RBI single by junior shortstop Joe Dunand jump-started the Wolfpack offense.

The score would stick at 2-0 for a few innings, as both pitchers traded scoreless frames. The Wolfpack opened the game up with back-to-back scoring innings, adding two runs in the sixth and seventh to go ahead 6-0.

NC State again got a good pitching performance from a converted reliever on Sunday, as junior righty Tommy DeJuneas earned the start and pitched five and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up only one hit.

Although the end result is undoubtedly good for DeJuneas, he didn’t quite get over the control issues that plagued him last season, as he walked five batters and uncorked two wild pitches. He threw a total of 46 strikes out of 91 total pitches, showing he was consistently out of the zone.

The bullpen was again stellar, finishing the game without allowing a hit, although the Rainbow Warriors did add a run in the eighth on a wild pitch. The Wolfpack added two more runs in the ninth to bring the final score to 8-1.

The Wolfpack debuted several freshmen in a tough opening weekend road series. The additions of Wilson and catchers freshman Brad Debo and sophomore Jack Conley seem to improve the lineup considerably.

The Wolfpack will return to Raleigh for much needed rest to combat the jetlag before facing Austin Peay in the home opening series next weekend.

No. 6 NC State Baseball Takes Series With 8-1 Sunday Win at Hawai’i (GoPack.com)

HONOLULU – Five different NC State pitchers combined to allow just one hit against Hawai’i in the Wolfpack’s 8-1 win Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium to claim the series. The Pack plated two runs each in the second, sixth, seventh and ninth innings.

NC State moves to 2-1 on the season, while Hawai’i falls to 1-2. Junior right-handed pitcher Tommy DeJuneas picked up the win for the Wolfpack in his first collegiate start, while Hawai’i starter Neil Uskali took the loss.

NC State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second to grab a 2-0 lead. Evan Mendoza and Shane Shepard drew consecutive walks to start the frame before Brad Debo reached on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by Hawaii’s shortstop allowed Mendoza to score the first run of the game.

Two batters later, Joe Dunand singled through the left side to drive in Debo from second base. Hawai’i tried to get something going in the bottom of the inning by putting the runner on first in motion, but Debo fired a strike to Dunand at shortstop to end the threat.

The Rainbow Warriors tried to steal second on Debo again in the third inning, but were unsuccessful again as the freshman from Durham, N.C., was up for the task.

Remember the name Brad Debo.  Just saying.

Pack shutting down that high power Austin Peay offense today while the bats have been spectacular.

It’s only February, but so far so good.

Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with that yard. It’s got real seats, lights, a great surface, fair lines, and a spring, Jetstream to left.

So that’s a no? Jet stream helped out on that grand slam in the top 8th!!!

I forget what year it was but Bob Black (one of the first guys to go to work for Lowes, ended as VP of sales) was playing golf in Myrtle Beach with Todd Turner. Cell phones were a novelty but Turner had one and was getting calls from Ray Tanner about up grades to the baseball facility.

Tanner wanted lights and an extra $5,000/year.

Turner nixed it there on the phone in front of Bob Black (who retired at 42).

    Tanner left shortly there after.

Only thing I’d change is to add about 4 inches between rows. Legroom is not at a premium, but otherwise I think we’re flush as far as the facility.

    This is not wholly inaccurate.

With all do respect I disagree with us being “flush”. Two, maybe three years straight preseason top 10 rankings, world series births….I’d just like to see a stadium that reflects what Avent has built here….you know, similar to every other team in the ACC. Not complaining, I absolutely love Doak, really. It’s like knowing I deserve a Range Rover but understanding I only need a Honda Pilot. I’ll leave it alone now.

We’d all like to have the proverbial Taj Mahal. For our demand, the supply at Doak is more than adequate. Besides, simple fact is that the facility was semi-recently renovated so it’s not likely gonna happen again anytime soon anyway.

Perhaps if/when our attendance warrants it, it’ll happen.

The legroom is a definite problem. I’m 6’2″ (or was before I started the age-related shrinking process), and I have no clue how anyone taller than that manages to sit down at all.

So the new Reynolds upgrade didn’t convert the basketball courts to baseball / retactible roof?

    Regarding Doak again…

Ever since the renovations (which were longer ago than I remembered, actually….’04) I’ve always thought a sloped roofline extending from section 3 to section 11 (basically dugout to dugout more or less) would look awesome. Even made the suggestion to the PTB.

I was cheerfully told no way…no ROI (my interpretation, admittedly…but that’s pretty much what I was told)

How’d the pitching look this weekend? Wanted to get out there but had guests in town who had other plans for me. What’s the word on Brown?

Another couple weeks for Brown as far as I know.
Aside from one bad pitch (grand slam) pitching was fine.
