Pack pulls off a heartstopper

On the same day that NC State’s Maverick Rowan earned recognition as a member of the ACC’s All-Academic team, the freshman earned an even bigger spot in the hearts of Wolfpackers when he delivered the game winning lay up with 1.1 seconds remaining on Senior Night.

Give Caleb Martin a ton of credit for avoiding panic and giving a look to Cat Barber that shifted the BC defenders and allowed Rowan to become open. The play appeared to be obviously called for Barber, and Boston College was focusing on Barber.

Despite Rowan’s efforts, Cat Barber led the way for the Wolfpack with 24 points. But, as usual, Barber’s offensive efforts were offset by NC State’s inability to play acceptable defense — BC entered Wednesday’s game as the #306 ranked field goal percentage shooting team in college basketball; but, the Eagles still hit 51.7% (15 of 29) in the first half.

The highlights might be fun to watch now…but, the game certainly wasn’t fun for NC State fans who watched the Wolfpack struggle and ultimately get lucky to defeat the Boston College Eagles who remain WINLESS in conference play.,

The Eagles, the first team in ACC history to be 0-17, led by 13 points in the first half and led by seven with 4:45 left in the game.

Gottfried burned through timeouts in the first half as Boston College went on a 33 to 13 run to go up 33-20 at the 3:49 mark in the first half.

“We weren’t playing very well at all,” Gottfried said. “We’d come out of a foul shot and we’d run down the floor and we’d have no idea who we’re guarding.

“You know, things you learn how to do in fifth grade. There’s only five of them and five of us, it’s not like they’re hiding somewhere.”

NC State is now 15-15 overall and 5-12 in the ACC with a weekend match-up at Notre Dame remaining as the last game of the season. State will play rival Wake Forest on Tuesday (yuck) in the ACC Tournament next week. Wake Forest is only 2-16 in the ACC, managing wins against only Boston College and…of course, NC State.

Coach Gottfried talks about Rowan’s game winner here:

Wufpacker, I don’t disagree with most of what you said, even the GWilliams stuff, (although where there’s fire). I even recanted somewhat to say that I could be wrong about not wanting to coach for her (esp with the quick and early contract extns). And I can’t put my finger on the comments she’s made fast enough for this thread. I do think the OC fire was wrong, shoulda been the DC, or both if there’s something there I don’t know. I totally disagree Gott deserved any extensions/raises. Ive seen him mismanage and blow more leads and games in the last minutes of too many games to too many lesser teams for me to stomach watching that crap any more, so no, I wouldn’t give him anything but another year to pull off some kind of a miracle. Hindsight is not a luxury, it’s a tragedy to me. And if I made the $500k Yow was making, I wouldn’t be worried about luxuries anyway, especially if I was looking to retire in the next couple years or so. For what it’s worth, IMHO, the comments in these threads do no harm to recruiting at all. Watching the games and the coaching is another story.

    LOL
Riiiight. It happened all last year. It also happened after the Maverick commit. But believe what you want.

I’ll accept anything not posted facetiously that says anything more than Gott is the best coach since V.

I think Yow has done a fantastic job with the non-revenue hires (which ARE important to the prestige of the university), and I don’t think put a foot wrong with the football search.

It’s only the hoops search “letter” incident that gives pause, and more importantly…the fact that she is WAY too close to retirement to be making the next basketball hire, if a new hire needs to be made in the very near future (what coach with options will sign with us not really knowing who he is going to be working for?).

Let me say something before this thread has completely devolved into useless drivel and baseless accusations.

Why should this one be any different?

    Your opinions are bad.

Agreed BJD. Aside from TLWSNBN (the letter which shall not be named) I love Yow. But as she moves from the mid to the latter 60s, one cannot help but have….concerns. Not her fault exactly, but the business is what it is.

OK, almost fell out of my chair laughing at DeNiro!! I don’t love Yow, I like her ok, and I think FB has a chance with Doeren. And she has been exceptional with non-revenue. I just can’t…with BB…I just can’t…

And yes, there was non-public stuff with respect to the OC (and I won’t get into details), but even if there hadn’t been…we paid for AND ACTUALLY GOT a significant upgrade. That impressed me greatly, and showed we are serious about winning football, despite our institutional limitations.

Yeah, that was a special edition for paki. He’ll get it I suspect.
And I agree that currently Gott has lost some luster. But I can’t blame her for that. Before this season I think his results have been at least what we’d all have wished for when the hire was made.
I doubt Smart, Donovan or Marshall would have bettered him thus far. Well yeah, until this year.
I think Yow was put in a bind during that search, and she saw Gott as a viable out. And thus far it has paid off. Going forward….we’ll see.
But I just don’t get all the Yow hate that seems to be becoming fashionable lately.

See, we need to find a way to bring back teh silly. I wonder if MG will take the team to see “Spotlight” Friday night to prepare them for what the Domers have in store for us…

You have to give Yow credit for some fantastic non-revenue hires. However, she deserves mucho criticism for the public meltdown in the basketball search.

And I think as far as a “fallback hire” which Gottfried unquestionably was – it was a solid one. If ever there was a case for co-ad’s it’s with Yow when it comes to non-revenue vs. Revenue.

    Several points….FOR the Record…
Shaka Smart, who has had a great season at UT, committed and our attorneys and his attorneys stayed up all night hammering out his contract (and the LOI). BUT, his very PG wife told him…”If you go to Raleigh, it will be without me…” Couple that with the fact the the Richmond Fat Cats sent their wives and daughters out to “earn” some money to keep Shaka. Shaka pulled that little scam for two or so more years and last year, the wives and daughters and granddaughters said….ENOUGH. So Shaka did not get a nice raise….and LEFT.

The letter was truly frustration. BUT, remember the great Herbie replacement by Mr. “I KNOW BB” Fowler. Admittedly, I was thrilled with Lowe and he tried, but personal issues intervened and his career cost him his family and marriage.

AD Yow was totally devastated by the Shaka withdrawl….and the letter was her way of venting….which we have NOT had any AD keep us up-to-date about things. She speaks her mind and is a tough boss. Look at where we were and where we are now.

I did not totally agree with Gott’s raise this year….but it was her call.

Last night was both a frustration and also exciting. I would have bet that Cat would have driven on the last play (when we brought the ball down). Gott said that Maverick was dialed in and he ran the play for him. It was a heady inbounds and we all left happy.

After we sang the Alma Mater, the PNC Sound Guy cued up “Danger Zone”. What a fitting memory as we walked out of our section. Here a freshman (with a brain no less) pulled off the play of the season. He obviously is living up to his name. Gott is also living up to Top Gun’s Maverick personality. The 3 point play for Maverick was about as gutsy a call as you will see….it didn’t work, but still gutsy.

Officiating was a bit spotty last night. Call the touches and then let the muggings continue. BUT, we did seem to get to the line more and we got a few make-up calls. I smelled trouble when I saw Jamie Luckie and his “unusual” run/walk gait. We NEVER have a good game when he has the whistle. At least GOTT did get the memo and wore a white shirt….I guess all his light blues were in the laundry.

Speaking of GOOD THINGS……the Lady pack destroyed BC tonight. Tomorrow night, they play Cuse and hope to avenge the Kay Yow Day loss. He also looked rather dapper tonight….maybe he can “coach” Gott on HOW to dress like you are the WPHBC.

Need a good game at ND….
