Pack pulls off a heartstopper

On the same day that NC State’s Maverick Rowan earned recognition as a member of the ACC’s All-Academic team, the freshman earned an even bigger spot in the hearts of Wolfpackers when he delivered the game winning lay up with 1.1 seconds remaining on Senior Night.

Give Caleb Martin a ton of credit for avoiding panic and giving a look to Cat Barber that shifted the BC defenders and allowed Rowan to become open. The play appeared to be obviously called for Barber, and Boston College was focusing on Barber.

Despite Rowan’s efforts, Cat Barber led the way for the Wolfpack with 24 points. But, as usual, Barber’s offensive efforts were offset by NC State’s inability to play acceptable defense — BC entered Wednesday’s game as the #306 ranked field goal percentage shooting team in college basketball; but, the Eagles still hit 51.7% (15 of 29) in the first half.

The highlights might be fun to watch now…but, the game certainly wasn’t fun for NC State fans who watched the Wolfpack struggle and ultimately get lucky to defeat the Boston College Eagles who remain WINLESS in conference play.,

The Eagles, the first team in ACC history to be 0-17, led by 13 points in the first half and led by seven with 4:45 left in the game.

Gottfried burned through timeouts in the first half as Boston College went on a 33 to 13 run to go up 33-20 at the 3:49 mark in the first half.

“We weren’t playing very well at all,” Gottfried said. “We’d come out of a foul shot and we’d run down the floor and we’d have no idea who we’re guarding.

“You know, things you learn how to do in fifth grade. There’s only five of them and five of us, it’s not like they’re hiding somewhere.”

NC State is now 15-15 overall and 5-12 in the ACC with a weekend match-up at Notre Dame remaining as the last game of the season. State will play rival Wake Forest on Tuesday (yuck) in the ACC Tournament next week. Wake Forest is only 2-16 in the ACC, managing wins against only Boston College and…of course, NC State.

Coach Gottfried talks about Rowan’s game winner here:

    Yuck! That was a stinker.

The season will end 15-17, and hopefully we’ll then pack up the jerseys and call it a season. No one wants to prolong this.

Congrats to Mav on the academic excellence!

First off, great job to pull off a last second win! I am happy we got the W.

Now, I can’t help but at least vent for a moment. We got our A$$ worn out most of the night battling back from multiple leads. BC is a Horrible team but yet they still managed to control 99% of the game on the last home game of the season. I am NOT bashing the players but I have to ask WTH? GOTT is the best Coach we have had since Jimmy V….ok we all get that. We have had good luck with the NCAA tourney part, again good job GOTT. HOWEVER, our season records every year in the ACC have been pretty week. Hello, if we have a strong ACC record we get the tourney bid no matter how much we make a magical run at the last minute of the season. Let’s not forget 2/3rds of the NCAA tourney teams were SID’s guys (no I’m not complimenting SID just saying the make up of the team). I for one would like to see a consistent ACC record and the rest takes care of itself. Without CAT this year the dumpster fire flames could be seen from the West Coast. I have concluded we will always have a terrible Defense and wacky Offense under GOTT. All these years I have NOT been a GOTT basher (still not) but at some point something has got to change. It seems we are consistently in the Wake & BC talent and strength level and GOTT has been here longer.

This is the first year ever I have chosen to not watch a lot of the games. Spend those hours doing some family time now. What will it take for us to be Atleast a Middle of the road team in the ACC? I’m not looking for miracles in the top tier but just realistic expectations for a consistent 4 or 5 team in the ACC? Who knows, it takes money and balls to make a big move, which we are kind of in a bad place with (especially money).

So good job to the team last night and keep working hard. This rant is not on them….

Win the ACC Tourney and no one gives a fu<k about the black hole, binge drinking, $hit show of a season. Cheers to making some “racket.”

Eas – I would say half the teams…only Vandenberg played for Lowe. Granted, Tyler was recruited by Lowe, but still Gott deserves credit for years 3 and 4.

I think this year, and certainly 2 years from now we may be in another dicey spot. Where Gott has failed is assembling a balanced roster.

Unless we have unexpected departures (read anyone but cat) – we should be good again and we will be perhaps his most talented team yet.

If he can’t do better than a 6 or 7 seed, we can pretty much say ,”we will never be great under Gott. “

Color me skeptical. It wouldn’t shock me if next year was only marginally better than this one. It also wouldn’t shock me if someone else leaves early.

^Agreed. We should on paper be marginally better for the simple reason that we can play 2 guards at a time. What a luxury! But marginal improvement and the replacement of a potential ACC POY PG with three years of experience with a FR who’s recovering from an ACL and hasn’t played for a year, well that isn’t exactly the recipe for major improvement. If Smith is as good as advertised and stays healthy, and we have two other guards to play, we should be 5-6 wins better IMO. That’s fairly consistent with where Gott’s been prior to this season. The ceiling is there, the floor looks a lot like this year. Meh.

Watching them run that baseline curl for Rowan on the play before the game-winner was embarrassing. Why are you running a play to get a 3 when you’re down by 1? Oh yeah, it’s because you have no other set plays. The lack of playcalling ingenuity could not be more clear. I, like many State fans, I’m sure, said out loud “I know what play we’re running” the moment Gott called timeout. I’ve never been sadder to be right. Despite the fact that it was an illogical play to run, despite the fact that every opponent has seen it 100 times on film, we all knew it was coming, because we have nothing else. It’s embarrassing, and emblematic of so many of this team’s problems.

Oh it will be better. It will be another squeak into the tournament year and you will see the same posters back on this site “calling people out” about how great Gott is. Like a 6th place finish and a win in the NCAA tournament is supposed to show us “haterzzz” something.

Hey, color me excited just to see the end of a season in which the Pack started with a double-digit loss at home against William & Mary. That kind of set the tone for apathy right there. And to have to win with a buzzer-beater against one of the worst teams in Division 1 basketball is not much better. Glad I missed this one (and most of the rest this year).

Hopefully the coaching crew can bring in some backup support at point guard and have at least one summer without a transfer (or two, or three).

    Very disappointing season this year.

Making the tourney next season is an absolute minimum just to keep his job. Rational people can disagree as to whether to set the bar HIGHER, but not LOWER. A dumpster fire is one thing, but last night…

Watched 2 games this year…the least since I was 8 and watching the championship in 74. It’s the hardest right now it’s ever been for me to be a Pack Fan, reference Football, Basketball, and to a lesser degree Baseball (they have done great but choked BIGTIME on several occasions resulting in just another colossal statesh1t letdown). We have talent come and go and no one here to inspire them to play above their expectations, and with heart. There are a few notable exceptions, of course. I see nothing with Gott, and haven’t for quite a while. He’s Gott to go. I’ll give Doeren a pass since he’s the newest but things went south fast last year! I see even less with D Yow at the helm. I’m not educated in the director’s area but If I were a major/winning coach looking for a change/challenge, I would NOT work for Yow. Sorry. I love NCState and have as long as I can remember anything but it is awfully hard to write those alumni/club checks every year when we have no ACC/NCAA championships to show for it…for many years! Shiny bricks, weight rooms, practice domes and jumbotrons aren’t bringing in the right talent, in both players and coaches. I don’t know if I’m alone on this but if so, so be it. I’ve seen us win National and Conference Championships. I was a student at NCState in the 80’s with Valvano, Sheridan, K Yow, etc. It could be that maybe my expectations are too high, and if that’s the case…what’s the point then anyway? I’m not into this for mediocre or less, which is what we gott now.

Agree with above, yawn. Watched about 4 games. Not entertaining, so I turn off. Unfortunately my remedy would be speed up our cycle a bit instead of giving the clowns 5-10 years to get going lets go with 2-3 years. That way in ten years instead of trying out 1-2 coaches we get 3-4. Eventually, we would have to find a guy that could lead us to a title since it’s been about everybody in the dang country that has had a major sports conf. title since we have.

What a nice morale boost for the guys. I fully expect that after we beat Wake, we’ll pull Hendo and Dennis off the bench to run the table and get our automatic bid. : )

Riiiight. It happened all last year. It also happened after the Maverick commit. But believe what you want.

WTH? Hard to play tough defense with 6 or 7 player, without serious foul trouble, in the ACC, if you’re wearing a red jersey.

Thankful for the fortunate finish. One of the few times I have ever felt confident going into that type of situation. Gott has consistently had great baseline inbound play calls.

Been asking myself that for a while now.
My biggest problem with Yow is that she’s likely to retire soon, and all which that implies.

Pakfanistan…Regarding D Yow; the Gary Williams thing, her controversial public comments, the letter, overall questionable decision-making, firing the OC instead of DC (whether or not it was her idea, it was at her discretion most likely), etc. Of course, one could argue, based on the Gott pre-season raise/contract extension last year, that someone might want to coach under her, so I could be wrong there.

    #100596

The letter was a brain fart, to be sure. And she knows it. But not exactly a reason to not want to work for her. More an excuse for fans to pull up when they feel like bitching about something (myself included…yes, admittedly I’ve done that).
Aside from that, what other decision making/public comments are you referring to? Admittedly, I might be forgetting something. But my remembrance is that for the most part she’s had more balls, and stood up for NCSU publicly more than any AD I can recall.
Do you really blame her for Gary Williams being a colossal douche?
Do you even know why the OC was fired?
Gott earned his extension. Regardless of what occurred this season or what happens going forward.

But please, go ahead and do the hindsight thing if you want. Yow doesn’t have that luxury though.

Yow has made some very good hires for non-revenue sports. I know, I know. Big deal. But I think it does show acumen for finding coaching talent. I think the FB and BB searches were tainted by a lot more than having her as AD, and the cards were stacked against her.
