Maverick Rowan has to have one of the $hittiest shooting percentages in D1.

20 points in the second half. They certainly fell short of last Saturday’s second half vs Wake Forest.

But to be fair, UVA is probably the best team in the ACC. They have everything State doesn’t: great coaching, great defense, great team play, and great shooting. State isn’t even good in any of those categories, and are awful in at least two of ’em.

So now it’s back to .500 and a likely 15-16 finish entering the ACCT, if they beat Clemson Saturday, which they might.

The only thing that I truly don’t understand about this team is this- why do the bench players NEVER seem to get any playing time? Looks to me like a 6-man rotation would welcome a breather once in a while.

I was talking to Former Clemson professor & fan over the weekend. I congratulated him on their FB season. In the conversation it came up that it’s easy to be a fan of a winning program – but it takes real loyalty to be a Wolfpack fan. If it weren’t true I’d have been insulted…

Again does anybody know if Terry Henderson is done for the season? Sure could use his points and play, so teams can’t make Barber the center of their attention.

How could we ever hope to compete with Virginia? They hired a national Coach of the Year who recruits to his system, develops and retains players and whose team plays defense, values the ball and takes good shot?

But yeah, Henderson was what separated us tonight……….

Can we redshirt Henderson? This season is over.

Not that the redshirt matters in the era of one and done.

Hilarious how the Swoffy Cabal made sure to circulate the talking points. I HATE THE ACC.

Fortunately I paid more attention to my chicken soup than the second half action. Oh well, shite happens.

Don’t forget to Call Saul later tonight, or (like me) on your DVRs come morning coffee time!

Could they be any more blatant? That’s a rhetorical question BTW.

Barber has had to work his tail off season, because he has nobody else to do his job. Henderson could give him some relief. Never said we could have won the game, or his play could have separated us tonight. Barber just has too much on him, and our present players tend to sit back and wait for him to do something. Poor guy needs some help. But of all our games played this season, this had to be the worst played, at least in the second half. Give UVA credit, but we certainly didn’t help matters.

^ Amen. Just somebody else that could dribble for a little bit. Or could pass so he could do some moving without the ball.

    Fatal flaw is fatal.

Basketball is so much easier when you have shooters. UVa has six guys that can shoot better than our second best shooter.

Well they do get much better shots than we do. And they also defend better than we do. But we do have more sweet 16s.

And one of the key reasons they do is because they don’t have three guys on the floor at the same time who are no threat to score outside of five feet. They also play better defense, but it’s pretty simple to play the ball screen when Frenchy screens for Cat at the elbow. You simply double Cat. If Richard Howell, Calvin, or TJ Warren sets that screen they make the defense pay. If I’m designing a defense to stop us, I’m begging somebody to throw any of our bigs the ball outside of dunk range.

The situation with the bigs is only going to get worse unless what we saw tonight was the beginning of Frenchy doing a Richard Howell.

Henderson doesn’t make this a tournament team. Bless you guys that can watch this team play.

Having not seen Henderson play with this club, I have nothing to base an intelligent view as to whether or not they would have been tourney bound.

…But I do know the Butterfly Effect.

Henderson takes this team from having NO chance to having SOME chance. It’s not a binary yes/no thing.

At the very least, Cat would have some help, and we would be able to run a discernible offensive set once in awhile. Would be nice for the viewer, anyway.

It’s easy to watch now because I have no expectation whatsoever. Season is completely toast. Just watching out of boredom, in case something cool happens. Nothing can piss me off. When the score gets out of hand (ie, at 58-42 last night), I turns it off and read.

Henderson on the court would and could have helped this team. I know life is not always fair but cant understand why the NCAA would strip Henderson of a full year of eligibility having played only 7 mins of first game of season. Not sure its true but heard from a Dookie friend that Dook was seeking a medical redshirt for Jefferson. Jefferson played 10 games while Henderson played less than 10 minutes.
The system is flawed and should lean in the favor of the young athlete not a by the book rule.

The plan was to have Lacey, Washington, and Henderson in the lineup this year. All three are scorers and would have made a huge difference in many of our loses. But that plan was shot and there was no back up plan or an ability to absorb the loses…so we have what we have, one elite caliber player, and the rest, well you know the rest. However, there is no explanation for playing sorry defense, unless it is not an emphasis, and it doesn’t appear to be.

I get that was the plan and yeah with that lineup we would be better. But our frontcourt would still be in shambles and as you mention the defense would be exactly the same. I think folks are trying to look at this on a micro level about losing henderson, lacey etc but I believe its a fundamental problem in regards to the entire program. Its the scattershot approach that Gott seems to be using. Bennett has built something from the ground up and its paying dividends while Gott just seems like he is consistently scrambling. An insider on TOS says we probably will sign a grad transfer big man or 2. Too me that is not fixing the problem and that is why we are perpetually playing catch up.

I hadn’t seen where the NCAA denied the medical redshirt. Can you point me to it?

Another thing I dont get is how in the hell does Maverick have a green light to shoot. Would any other coach in the country just like him jack up shots like he does? Kid may turn out good in a couple years but sheesh he is a liability at both ends.

BassPacker, the NCAA allows players to have 5 years to play 4. They will rarely allow someone 6 years to play 4 if the 2 additional years were lost due to circumstances outside the control of the player or the university, eg., two years lost due to injury. Also, they do not consider losing a year due to the player having to sit out for a transfer as being outside the player’s control, ie. it was the player’s choice to transfer.

A big difference between Henderson and Jefferson is Henderson has already used up his extra year, Jefferson has not.

    92owen,

I think it’s the opposite, I think that coach is specifically running plays for him to get shots and take pressure off of Cat. When he’s on (like he was for Duke, GT, and Pitt) he quite an asset. He’s also averaging 3-4 rebounds a game, and actually has a decent drive and shoot game.

His 3pt % is only slightly lower than Caleb Martin, but when he’s hot, he stays hot longer.

Personally, I think that next year, he’s going to reach Scott Wood type levels, but also have a floor game (which Scott never really did).

Aeight: If that was the plan, then the staff wasn’t paying attention. It was obvious that Washington was gone when they sent him to the bench down the stretch last year. They reaped what they sowed on that one.

Lacey probably surprised them. They also got Rowan because Lacey was gone. Was it a good trade? Not in year one, but Rowan wouldn’t be here if Lacey were here. He was promised a lot of minutes early, which is why he picked State over Louisville after Louisville did the work to reclassify him. He’s also an older freshman (6 months younger than junior Freeman). There’d be no Rowan had Lacey not announced.

Henderson’s injury has definitely hurt us. No question about that. He wasn’t fixing the issues with the big men, the lack of fundamentals, the poor shots the offense generates, the lack of defense. Would we have been better? Yep. Maybe even 1-2 non-conference and 3 or so conference wins better. That’s still on the bubble at best.

The question to me is whether this staff can ever get over the hump. I personally don’t think so. For reference, check out Gott’s high major record:
    – Alabama, 11 years, .616 overall winning percentage, .503 in conference
    – NC State, 5 years, .617 overall winning percentage (as of last night), .506 in conference
Eerily similar huh? At a certain point, you are what your record reflects, and there’s 16 years of track record here saying that’s what this guy is.
