Wolfpack Football (5-2, 1-2 ACC) bounced back last week, getting a much needed victory at Wake and snapping a two game losing skid.

Honestly, it really only took 15+ minutes of good football to better the Deacs last weekend.  But the Pack needs to put together a full 60 this weekend at home as the competition ramps up considerably with the #3 Clemson Tigers (7-0, 4-0 ACC) coming to Raleigh.  The Tigs are coming off a 58-0 woodshedding of Miami (AT Miami, btw) last weekend during which they looked….well, pretty good.

Kickoff is 3:30pm, ABC/ESPN2 split (ABC locally, Channel 11)

House Money vs Trap Game

Both are overused terms IMHO, but both fit today.

Clemson hosts FSU next week. In their minds, that is likely their biggest hurdle (with possible exception of a potential ACCCG appearance) to landing in the CFB Playoff. Will they be looking ahead? Stranger things have happened.

Defense is likely to win this one for whichever team prevails. And in spite of being favored by 10.5 points, this expert agrees Clemson’s road value might be overstated in this line…

Losing to Clemson, even badly, will not likely break the Pack’s season. Beating them however, could very well be a season maker, instilling confidence in a young team. Not to mention getting another win.

A win which would give the Pack bowl eligibility, btw.

So play loose, try to minimize errors/penalties, hope Clemson comes out tight, and let’s see what happens.  What could go wrong???

In any case, save for Jerod Fernandez State is pretty healthy going into the game. Hopefully they still will be coming out of it, win or no.

Big Opportunity for NC State Against No. 3 Clemson (GoPack.com)

Renowned for its boisterous atmosphere, Carter-Finley has earned the reputation of bringing out the best in recent Wolfpack teams in games of this magnitude. A year ago against top-ranked Florida State, the Pack jumped out to a 24-7 lead before eventually falling, 56-41. In 2012, NC State shattered No. 3 FSU’s national title hopes with a come-from-behind 17-16 triumph over the Seminoles. The year before that, the Wolfpack took down a Clemson team ranked seventh, 37-13.

A big opportunity beckons again for the 2015 Pack, which will need all the home cooking it can muster against a Clemson team that has won 10 straight games dating back to last season.

“Just knocking off the No. 3 team in the country on our home field would be really good,” said State fullback Jaylen Samuels. “For our program, people would look at us differently.”

This Clemson team, coach Dabo Swinney’s eighth in Death Valley, seems to be improving with every game. Over the last three games, the Tigers have averaged 45 points and 545 yards of total offense. It’s a three-game stretch that culminated with last weekend’s stunning 58-0 demolition of Miami on the road. On the other side of the ball, Clemson ranks fourth in the nation in total defense (262.3) and seventh in scoring defense (14.3). In the aftermath of the win over Miami, the Tigers received six first place votes in the AP Poll.

NC State a threat to undefeated Clemson (NewsObserver.com)

N.C. State (5-2, 1-2 ACC) was the last unranked team to knock off the Tigers, historically noted as the last act of “Clemsoning,” back in 2011 at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack, and Georgia Tech last year, are the only ACC teams outside of FSU to beat the Tigers since the start of the 2011 season.

“We know they will be jacked up for the Tigers to show up,” said Swinney, whose seventh-ranked Tigers lost 37-13 at N.C. State on Nov. 19, 2011. “It’s a tough place to play, we all know that.”

Swinney called Carter-Finley Stadium “one of the best places to play in this conference.” The Wolfpack won three of its past five home games against top 10 teams.

The two losses, 26-14 to No. 3 Clemson in 2013 and 56-41 to No. 1 Florida State last year, were two of the most inspired performances by the Wolfpack under third-year coach Dave Doeren.

Incidentally, the past five times a top ten opponent has entered Carter-Finley, they’ve thrice returned home with a loss.  And the two wins did not come easily for the opposition.

But is a block in the back reviewable? Ummmm, I don’t think so. Im pretty sure those ACC officials just did something they don’t have the authority to do.

While losses are never a good thing, the team definitely show some fight for 4 quarters, and gave the #3 team in land a Halloween scare. The offense did their part, but the defense let some big pass plays doom our upset bid. But definitely a great chance to finish strong for the rest of the season, if we pick up where we left off today. And this same team beat Miami 58-0 last week, who beats Duke. Coastal division clearly very weak. Too bad we didn’t play like this against the ville, and vt. Lets see who show next week vs. BC.

Forgot to mention the previous high scored against the tiggers, was 24, and we get 41, which could have easily been 51, with the missed FG, and failed TD, in the 4th.

I would have loved to have gone into the half with the lead. That sequence from 3rd down, ugly FG attempt then Clempson’s score was hard to watch.

DD said Dayes had a toe injury, hopefully not serious. JB still locking on receivers and not checking other options. Dont want to complain about zebras but once again we get hosed. Several holdings not called when we are on D, and several muggings/holding on our receivers with no flags. In 3rd Q, DD was hot and screaming at one official who was watching the mugging and no call. I wish DD would go ballistic, get a penalty, get suspended or fined, but speak out and say we are not taking this any more.

Also, I am so confused. So the refs can review a penalty for block in the back and pick up the flag. But they cant review the blatant block in the back not called on the Miami 15 or the Miami 25? I guess since the flag was not thrown they cannot review the missed penalty, but since a flag was thrown on the Duke 25 they can review?

Agree with you MIKE, one sided officiating, to help out the tigers.

Just another day in Swofford’s ACC. The Duke v Miami officiating crew should be suspended, but Swofty will give them a good ol boy pat on the back and a nice bonus.

Cutcliffe is none too pleased with the way it all went down last night. It was not explained to him. Evidently, they reviewed whether the Miami player’s knee was down, whether they were all backwards laterals, and the block in the block.

“There were all kinds of issues that need to be addressed by the conference. It’s not my job,” he said. “… You may have questions pop into your mind. Call the ACC. They should have answers. I had no answers for our guys in the locker room that had spilled their guts on the field.”

Big picture – we have 5 wins with four to play, but only 1 win in conference. Remaining games against BC, FSU, Cuse and a much improved UNC.

The way I see it, 2-2 is the most likely outcome of this season ending stretch, which gives us 7 wins and 3 in conference. BC and Cuse are must wins. Lose either of those and this will turn to a disappointing season.

It’s very simple, and Cutcliffe should f-ing come out and say it. The boss that these refs answer to is an UNABASHED HOMER for his archrival school. Res ipsa loquitor.

Dare Swoffy to come with the fines. And our administration and coaches better back his ass up 100%. This is a golden opportunity to leverage that POS out the door.

OK….I, too, watched the D-M game. Couple of observations….some partially made last night.

The officiating crew was the most flag happy that I have seen….

Miami got flagged 23 (not a TYPO) times….for a total of 194 Yards
Duke got flagged 5 times….for a total of 41 yards.

The last Duke drive (where they scored and took the lead) had at least 3 flags….and it looked like the ref’s were bound and determined that Duke WIN.

To say it was an evenly and professionally called game would be a farce……SO….

I do NOT pretend to be a “rule book junkie”. What I thought happened….was that the laterals and “handoff’s” were reviewed, to determine if the runner was “Downed”. Not having the benefit of the video….who knows.

As to the “Flag” that, I think, was for an illegal block, I, too, did not know if a call could be reviewed. Now, the booth can make the call on Targetting……that happened in our game.

BUT, I thought it was a “FIELD CALL” on whether the infraction occurred. SO, if one official flagged it, but after a conference of the officials, the Referee determines that what he saw compared to what OTHERS saw was in error, then the Flag is picked up. We have seen several times where a Ref will say…”There is NO flag on the play”. I ASSUMED that this is what happened….

BUT, again, I was not privvy to the analysis or the decisions.

I will point out, as many of you are aware, that there is a Multi-Million $$ “War Room” in the ACC HQ in G’boro. It is a state of the art video center and every minute movement that the “Booth” officiating crew sees and THEIR audio is being monitored with more intensity that Hillary’s folks do Donald Trump’s BM’s.

SO, ODDS ARE…..Every pixel was reviewed in G’Boro. Now, whether Swoff is whispering into Clougherty’s ear….only HE and SWOFF know. BTW, Mr. C IS RETIRING this year….so this is is LAST FB season.

I totally agree that Cutt should use every administrative avenue open to him to get an GOOD answer.

BUT, unless you have the Audio from Swoff to Clougherty to the Booth to the Ref where he says….IT IS A LEGAL PLAY….pull your flag and score the TD, then the rest is pure speculation.

If you watched the last Duke Drive….they would NOT have scored had it NOT been for the Ref’s….so it appears to me to be a really ugly game, from an officiating standpoint….and Duke CERTAINLY got the advantage of the calls. CUTT has to be careful when he calls out the Zeb’s….as the numbers and bias that he asserts are NOT in his favor.

I really THOUGHT that the penalties were more even….but the Box Score on Go-Duke indicates otherwise.

    OK….after I wrote this, I found this article…..it explains a LOT….from someone that should know….

Did forget to mention with 11+ minutes left in the game, absolutely disagree with the onside kick, then turn around and do it again a few plays later. I say bury them deep, stop them, and we have a shorter field. And if we had done a better job with fumble recoveries, like when we knocked the ball from Watson, then they would have not scored a TD, on the next play. But again overall proud of the effort, and making the tiggers play 4 quarters to win. A 9-3 finish would be awesome.

Doeren played leverage ABSOLUTELY correctly. Our D was gassed, kicking deep and playing conventional was suicide. Not to mention that each kick was a hair from WORKING.

When you are outgunned, you should scheme like it. And we did.

Except the officials didn’t confer, and they announced the flag was picked up because the REVIEW determined in was a block from the side.

I was pleading for either an onside kick or pooch kick to the gap on both kicks before they were executed. For the reasons beej gave.
