Wolfpack Football (5-2, 1-2 ACC) bounced back last week, getting a much needed victory at Wake and snapping a two game losing skid.

Honestly, it really only took 15+ minutes of good football to better the Deacs last weekend.  But the Pack needs to put together a full 60 this weekend at home as the competition ramps up considerably with the #3 Clemson Tigers (7-0, 4-0 ACC) coming to Raleigh.  The Tigs are coming off a 58-0 woodshedding of Miami (AT Miami, btw) last weekend during which they looked….well, pretty good.

Kickoff is 3:30pm, ABC/ESPN2 split (ABC locally, Channel 11)

House Money vs Trap Game

Both are overused terms IMHO, but both fit today.

Clemson hosts FSU next week. In their minds, that is likely their biggest hurdle (with possible exception of a potential ACCCG appearance) to landing in the CFB Playoff. Will they be looking ahead? Stranger things have happened.

Defense is likely to win this one for whichever team prevails. And in spite of being favored by 10.5 points, this expert agrees Clemson’s road value might be overstated in this line…

Losing to Clemson, even badly, will not likely break the Pack’s season. Beating them however, could very well be a season maker, instilling confidence in a young team. Not to mention getting another win.

A win which would give the Pack bowl eligibility, btw.

So play loose, try to minimize errors/penalties, hope Clemson comes out tight, and let’s see what happens.  What could go wrong???

In any case, save for Jerod Fernandez State is pretty healthy going into the game. Hopefully they still will be coming out of it, win or no.

Big Opportunity for NC State Against No. 3 Clemson (GoPack.com)

Renowned for its boisterous atmosphere, Carter-Finley has earned the reputation of bringing out the best in recent Wolfpack teams in games of this magnitude. A year ago against top-ranked Florida State, the Pack jumped out to a 24-7 lead before eventually falling, 56-41. In 2012, NC State shattered No. 3 FSU’s national title hopes with a come-from-behind 17-16 triumph over the Seminoles. The year before that, the Wolfpack took down a Clemson team ranked seventh, 37-13.

A big opportunity beckons again for the 2015 Pack, which will need all the home cooking it can muster against a Clemson team that has won 10 straight games dating back to last season.

“Just knocking off the No. 3 team in the country on our home field would be really good,” said State fullback Jaylen Samuels. “For our program, people would look at us differently.”

This Clemson team, coach Dabo Swinney’s eighth in Death Valley, seems to be improving with every game. Over the last three games, the Tigers have averaged 45 points and 545 yards of total offense. It’s a three-game stretch that culminated with last weekend’s stunning 58-0 demolition of Miami on the road. On the other side of the ball, Clemson ranks fourth in the nation in total defense (262.3) and seventh in scoring defense (14.3). In the aftermath of the win over Miami, the Tigers received six first place votes in the AP Poll.

NC State a threat to undefeated Clemson (NewsObserver.com)

N.C. State (5-2, 1-2 ACC) was the last unranked team to knock off the Tigers, historically noted as the last act of “Clemsoning,” back in 2011 at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack, and Georgia Tech last year, are the only ACC teams outside of FSU to beat the Tigers since the start of the 2011 season.

“We know they will be jacked up for the Tigers to show up,” said Swinney, whose seventh-ranked Tigers lost 37-13 at N.C. State on Nov. 19, 2011. “It’s a tough place to play, we all know that.”

Swinney called Carter-Finley Stadium “one of the best places to play in this conference.” The Wolfpack won three of its past five home games against top 10 teams.

The two losses, 26-14 to No. 3 Clemson in 2013 and 56-41 to No. 1 Florida State last year, were two of the most inspired performances by the Wolfpack under third-year coach Dave Doeren.

Incidentally, the past five times a top ten opponent has entered Carter-Finley, they’ve thrice returned home with a loss.  And the two wins did not come easily for the opposition.

  • No. 1 FSU L, 56-41 Sept. 27, 2014
  • No. 3 Clemson L, 26-14 Sept. 18, 2013
  • No. 3 FSU W, 17-16 Oct. 6, 2012
  • No. 7 Clemson W, 37-13 Nov. 19, 2011
  • No. 9 FSU W, 20-15 Nov. 5, 2005

Did I say announcers are knuckle heads? It’s worse. They are totally incompetent.

I think the new trend in announcing is to constantly insult one of the two fanbases watching.

We’re used to it with the sports radio jackholes around here.

I just wasn’t sure before today how good we were or what to expect. But I am encouraged. We were in the game against #3 and were more than competitive on offense and defense. They are better than us, but not by a mile. Play like that we could win out.

In our “spirit animal” game, Texas Tech lost a 38-28 halftime lead and lost to Okie State 70-53.

    So…it could totes be worse.

There are good signs out there…I just hope they aren’t fools gold like the close call against FSU was this year.

The bigger encouraging sign would be a workmanlike win against BC next week.

I feel for those Duke kids, who are 5-1 and have a really good chance of winning their division: Wallace Wade is mostly empty tonight. The players deserve better. Coach Cutcliffe deserves better.

Duke is empty due to demographics.
student body is soccer, not AMERICAN football.
alumni is elsewhere watching the Mets.

Duke getting dicked over by the refs. Swoffy has an interest in THAT, too.

Wow. Clemson. Better than I thought. Talented, big and fast, but also very well coached and disciplined, especially the DEs.

Knew about Watson, but better in person. Same with their TB. I did not realize how good, big, and athletic their OL is. Impressed. Very. Ill be surprised if they don’t get to 13-0.

NC State played better than I expected against a team that is better than I thought. Progress made. They kept fighting till the end. But still much work to do. Clean it up, get better.

Welcome back Mr Grinnage. Looks like he’s finally getting healthy. But really, Dayes? Hopefully it’s not serious. I think I saw the play when he got hurt, if so, it’s an ankle or foot.

FG’s. Ick. I can appreciate standing by your talented freshman, but it’s about production. Is there really no other option, even if just to shake it up a bit?

Jacoby… nice game, unbelievable effort, but dude, you gotta stop pre determining reads or missing them all together. You had Hines uncovered in the slot early in the game, you never looked at him, not even pre snap. Instead of punting, it would’ve been 6.

Was impressed with the OL against Clemson’s front. I think this was the first game all season in which all 5 starters were healthy. Hopefully this game starts a trend.

At BC next week. Let’s see if we can remember and apply learned lessons. I see the big picture progression of the program, but a loss next week btings steps backwards, again. Clean it up coaches. Clean it up, Pack. Keep pushing forward.

    Thoughts on the game:
    Good offensive game plan.
Brisset with his best game this year.
Team didn’t quit and that’s very positive.
Hines is getting better every game.
Where was this offense vs. Va tech and the ‘ville?
DD and staff said that kicker makes them in peace. Hopefully they will get his head straight.
Announcers called out fans for poor second half starting attendance. I wouldn’t be surprised ifsomeone told them to bring this up…it obviously pisses DD off and probably does deb as well. IMHO -/they should consider eliminating pass outs for big games if situation doesn’t improve.

My TOME post got zapped….good thing.

@AlFiredGolden….If you boys had played with balls half the size that you brought to Duke, I would still be on the sideline.

NOW, Duke just scored, but unless there is a Miracle at WWS, then their #22 ranking in fading…and the “famed” 1939 matchup of them as BOTH Top 25 teams looks less likely….it AIN’T going to happen.

PENALTIES. I have NEVER seen MORE flags….unless it was a convention of HS Marching Band Flag Squad teams. Since Duke USED to fill the stand with HS bands and Flag Squads and such…and their parents….I GUESS that is WHY the Ref’s are throwing them like they are on Incentive Pay.

Has ANYONE had a confirmed siting of Ron Cherry calling an ACC game this year? I swear that his crew MUST be at Duke. I can not remember a game that had MORE flags.

I agree with CHOP. It was a good game. We lost, but with dignity. We never threw in the towel.

Chop’s comments on the fans. I did a survey (and I did this semi-professionally in the past) of the seats. There were probably LESS than 1000 vacant seats midway through Q1. It was a little sparse at Q3. BUT, it was not as bad as I have seen. It was only in the closing minutes of Q4 that there was a mass exodus.

Really proud of the team today….showed a LOT of heart. When Clemson has to keep the FOOT ON THE GAS for 40 minutes….you KNOW you played a great game.

I stayed in my seat, and yes, it was poor attendance to start the 2nd half.

That said, it was homecoming and they asked people to remain in their seats at halftime time till after presentations. They can’t have it both ways.

The fans also are not responsible for the piss poor logistical design of CF and the log jams it creates, nor the ushers who stand at the top of the steps and do NOTHING to stop people from cutting in line, or those who stop to talk to every Tom, Dick, and Harry that might happen by, or anything else that blocks the progression of the line.

So if they want to complain, f’ them.

We gave the Tigers a game. That’s all that you can ask for right now. Clemson is a legit top 3 team – they may even be the best in the land. We’ll see. But if they get by the Noles next week they have some pretty smooth sailing to the playoff. Good job by the Pack. Now, as others have stated, you cannot lay an egg against BC. Big game. They are all big from here on out.
