Charlotte throws hat in ring for College Football Playoff

It feels like a long-shot….but, why not!?!

The cities bidding on the right to host the College Football Playoff Championship in 2018, 2019 and 2020 have been finalized.

The College Football Playoff announced that nine cities submitted bids for the three years. Houston and Santa Clara (the site of the San Francisco 49ers new stadium) were the two cities that bid on the rights to every year.

“We are pleased that the leaders in these communities recognize the significance of the event, and we are excited about what we know will be a competitive bidding process,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement. “In its first year, the national championship game brought tremendous opportunity to North Texas as the epicenter of college football, and we know that success will continue in the future.”

The game at the end of the 2015 season is in Glendale, Arizona and the 2017 title game is in Tampa, Florida. The 2015 edition was in Dallas. So with those sites already known, we’re going to wager that Houston gets the game in 2018, Santa Clara gets it in 2019 and either Minneapolis or New Orleans gets it in 2020.

Our reasoning? Well, we figure that the cities bidding for all three years will be rewarded and that the CFP will want to establish a regional rotation of sorts. With the first three games being played in three different time zones, it only makes sense to continue the trend as much as possible. Though we do also know this is college football, after all. Sometimes things don’t make sense.

And heck, we’re company people here at Dr. Saturday. We want to see Santa Clara get the game.

Dallas and Jacksonville recently said they weren’t going to bid on the games until the process for 2021 and beyond started.

Just say “no” to a night game in Jacksonville. I still remember attempting to watch the Gator Bowl through the fog.

Houston already has the 2016 Final Four and the 2017 Super Bowl, so the 2017 CFB Championship would be logical.
