Certainly can’t blame every loss the on the refs, but at least they owned up to a mistake. They have managed to keep it pretty fair now that King Karl is out of the picture.
The ACC acknowledged that the game officials made a mistake toward the end of Wake Forest’s 88-84 win over N.C. State on Tuesday evening. Through some intense investigating by Giglio and a FOIA request, the News & Observer obtained a copy of Yow’s email on Thursday. The email stated that Wake Forest forward Devin Thomas should have been called for a flagrant one foul with 40.5 seconds left in the game.
Under NCAA rules, a flagrant one foul is “non-excessive” contact, such as a player swinging an elbow, which results in two free throws and possession of the ball. If the flagrant foul had been correctly called, the Wolfpack would have gotten 4 free throws in addition to possession of the ball.
It doesn’t really do much good to dwell over the “what ifs” of the game, as hard as that may be. Check out the full article here for more details of missed call and Gottfried’s thoughts on the matter.
