Pack Alums = Big Prospects

Believe it or not, baseball is just around the corner. You might have missed this entry that got squeezed between a lot of activity when it was posted.

Recently, MLB.com released lists of the top Major League prospects at various positions. Of course, it felt great to see two of NC State’s finest grabbing some big time press!

The #2 left handed pitcher prospect in the minor leagues? Well…does Carlos Rodon really need any introduction?

2. Carlos Rodon, White Sox. Entering last spring, Rodon was the favorite to be the top overall pick in the Draft. But he wasn’t quite as dominant as expected during his junior season at North Carolina State, and ultimately went third overall. Rodon should quickly reach Chicago, and he has the stuff, size and makeup to become a top-of-the-rotation pitcher once he does.

8. Trea Turner, Padres: He’s a Padre, for now. The player to be named in the three-team deal that brought Wil Myers to San Diego, Turner will become a part of the Washington Nationals organization in June. The 2014 first-rounder has top-of-the-chart speed and knows how to use it well on the basepaths. He showed a very good feel for hitting during his pro debut and could move quickly, especially once he’s past this trade oddity.

As far as Carlos goes there are three possibilities early on. A) He kills it during spring training and makes the Opening Day active roster; B) He performs well, but not spectacularly, and stays in Charlotte until the last week of April/first week of May; or C) He underperforms and stays in Charlotte for the first two months or so. Carlos is a Boras signee, so the Sox will be looking to maximize service time with the club. This would be most likely be route B. However, Rick Hahn has stated that Carlos will be evaluated on his talent and grasp of the major league game, not necessarily just service time. Not only that, but he IS a starter, so the team doesn’t want him in the bullpen too long, especially with the crowding there now after three offseason bullpen additions.

As a Sox fan, I want him up as soon as possible. I want a rotation of Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks and Rodon ASAP.
