N.C. State vs. the Cheats – 7pm

Ordinarily I attempt to construct a game thread entry with a brief and fairly objective look at State’s upcoming opponent … A simple frame of reference for those who may wish to invest some time into an upcoming game and/or invest some time here at the site during a game. Usually, I’ll utilize a photo of an opponent’s mascot or some other fun-type photo as the featured image. The tone is, hopefully, light. Yay … Fun.

Please forgive my indulgence, but I’m not doing any of that today.

You see, in my opinion the program State is facing tonight deserves no photos, deserves no pomp or celebration, no part of a fun, yet fierce, friendly rivalry. Hell, as evidenced by the title of this post you can see that I don’t even believe they should be referenced by their proper title. Over the past few decades, that program State is facing tonight just up and threw all of that away. Their reasons are their own, but I’m sure you can guess.

It’s important to note that the team coming to Raleigh tonight has some good kids – and they are kids. Marcus Paige in particular comes across as a really swell guy. For my part, there is certainly no hate for anyone – least of all the kids on that team. After all, they were brought into a program by adults who made certain promises to them. Adults that have – as we now see – turned that program into something ugly. All that said, those kids and that team represent ‘that program’.

And what ‘that program’ deserves is a beating.

They so richly deserve it, especially from our long suffering group in Raleigh. Sure, it’s just one game – and State could very well lose. ‘Deserve’s got nothing to do with it’. True that. As we see though with recent news and happenings surrounding ‘that University’ – eventually in one way or another, one form or another, people will get what they deserve.

Speaking only for myself, I typically hope most involved directly with State athletics avoid online forums and message boards because hey – let’s face it: us fans can get a little wacky at times. That said, if someone from our program does happen to come across these words – here is a message from me to you:

Kick that ass.

Some of you guys praising Dez Lee. I guess you forget how many times he cost us games last year, huh. Having said that, definitely not a Barber fan either.

While it’s clear that Anthony is suffering from the traditional “sophomore slump”…
but it’s not because he playing point guard if that’s you call the guy running the set offense….

It’s also clear from here that Lacey was running the offense tonight most all of the time that he and Anthony were in the game at the same time… same as on Sunday versus Dook…

Ya’ll saw the game… at least try to get your facts straight…

    —————–
    Just for fun…

Anthony’s performance and production tonight showed great improvement in all areas over his game last season against the Holes in the Dean Dome. If that rate of improvement continues… he ought to be First Team All ACC his Senior year under the steady and guiding hands of Coach GOTT & Company.

What I wanted to say was more than 140 characters and you realize that for most people that account is indicative of the typical reaction of a blogger on this site, so in a way for the clueless among us it reflects on everyone that posts.

    FTFY
I mean seriously…first you’re going to the trouble of complaining about fans complaining about officiating. Good luck with that.
Then you’re rationalizing it by trying to say it’s feasible that people of normal intelligence believe that every poster on this site(s) has input to/control over its twitter account.
Not to mention that you came here to complain rather than just sending a tweet in response to the tweets you found objectionable.
I’m seriously wondering if you’re a parody of some sort.

I’m sorry Rick, I have been a terrible blogger for complaining about whining…

    We appreciate your apology.

Gotts offense sucks. Why, why, what in the he)) is that offense? One guy dribbles around in a predictable pattern with the others mostly standing around until someone tries to rescue the dribbler.

don’t get me going on defense.

Gott is not 1/10 the coach of olroy, the cheater.

Once in a while we beat a dook or somebody, but I just don’t see how we can beat well coached teams other than when the strs line up.

I don’t believe nor do I say that every poster has access to the Twitter account, I say that as a Twitter account with the username of the url of this site that it generally speaks of its posters to a laymans perspective (to those that do not frequent the statefansnation.com site). But I do believe that it sets a bad example for a Twitter name of “statefansnation” to tweet 80% about the refs and 20% about the teams in a fairly evenly called game. I’m sorry if I have offended anyone but I don’t believe the Twitter account associated with this site speaks for rational and the majority of statefans. I do beileve that this is medium in which I am more likely to be heard which is why I posted here but if I am to believe that my opinion is no longer welcome the. I will happily address my future responses to the Twitter account in question.

I attended the game tonight and a few glaring things stood out. 1. Odd substitutions- not sure why Lacey came out under the 5 min mark for a few minutes. 2. Defense – confusion, lack of some concise identity or plan, spitballing(very bad to still be spitballing in the last minutes). 3. The amazing grit and hustle in the last 5 min or so. 4. Officiating. It was very bad. For what it’s worth while hanging around waiting for traffic to die down, 2 refs left with an entourage of unc clad family or friends. Just sayin.

After thinking about it, the substitutions were part of the dance that has to be done regarding foul trouble. I’m not going to tout a moral victory here but that was a damn close game, gone are the days when we folded bad everytime. We are in there and in a position to win. We aren’t pushovers any more. We better get them in chapel hill. As frustrating as it was to lose, it was a very exciting game and I enjoyed it. It was my son and nephew’s first state/ unc game and it was like a rite of passage. They now know the joy and pain of what it really means to be a wolfpacker. Their soul has been tattooed.

… if I am to believe that my opinion is no longer welcome the.[sic] I will happily address my future responses to the Twitter account in question.

No, your opinion is welcome. Folks are just disagreeing with you. It’s all cool.

I – personally – don’t want to urge you to no longer post here upon the matter in question … you certainly can if you wish. I will say, however, that the overwhelming majority of regular users here on SFN know that the ‘statefansnation’ twitter handle is representative of only one (or a few at most) person(s).

Folks that follow ‘statefansnation’ on twitter but perhaps don’t visit the actual SFN site (at all or very little) may not be aware of the twitter handle representation. Therefore in my opinion (and mine alone) it may be more effective to address your concerns directly with the source.

So far as I’m concerned, disagreement and dissenting opinion are welcome here – and that’s huge part of what makes this forum an awesome community. Of course, folks aren’t always going to be polite when they’re disagreeing with one another, haha … it is the interwebz after all 🙂

^Yeah, much to my chagrin I think we have to give the cheating bastards a lot of credit. ‘Dadgum’ (Roy) gets us about every time. Their defensive game plan was very effective, as Lacey started poorly – and I thought he started forcing in the first half. Once Ralston got into foul trouble that was all she wrote, scoring wise, in the first half.

They shot damn near 60% on the night, and a lot of that had to do with Paige, directly. When he wasn’t hitting every shot he took, he set up others in easy positions to score. We didn’t have a lot of answers last night, yet somehow only lost by two points.

I viewed last night more so in the fashion of ‘they won the game’ as opposed to ‘we lost it’. For as bad as we were both offensively and defensively at times, we did some good things. The effort in the 2nd half was outstanding, particularly not giving in when down 12 late in the second half. Hell, Paige hit a 3 to put them up 11 w/ under 4:00 to go and our guys still fought back to within a point, somehow.

While it’s a stinging loss, I think a lot of us here had resigned ourselves to fate in those last few minutes haha 🙂 . Kudos to those kids and the staff for not once giving up on the game. I put zero amount of faith into getting them at the Cheat Dome, but you never know.

Any loss to the light blue clad is painful and with such a loss I can after the fact identify all the points in the game where there were failings. I can also identify points in this game where the team showed grit and determination. Before this stretch of games I said I would be happy with going .500 and the team achieved that. Still there is pain after last night.
As Yoda would say – Progress I see but there is much work to be done.
As Jimmy V would say – If you are in the game you can win the game.
Not happy but not tossing the furniture either. I am happy with the total effort though unhappy with the outcome.

Exactly. When UNC gets it going like that offensively they are very tough to beat. No answer for Paige, and he set a bunch of guys up for easy scores. Tremendous effort all around. We are definitely tourney caliber. Gotta take care of business now. And we may want to look at Lacey at the point. Very little production at that position right now.

I sincerely have learned every team from UNSUX to even us is filled with ignorant fans. For the person who said anything negative about Trevor Lacey’s performance tonight you sir are ignorant…he had a very productive defender in his hip pocket all night.

4-13 from the field and 1-6 from three
That is what he shot. He missed a lot of shots and a bunch were open. If you want to excuse it fine but he played bad. Here’s a little something you should understand about basketball, the best player is guarded by the best defender. It has happened every game so to say the UNC guy is the best defender he has faced is absurd.

So stop calling people who disagree with your opinion ignorant. It does nothing to bolster your argument.

Your total contribution to this thread has been to continually whine about a twitter feed. I disagree with pup in that I think your “contribution” is worhtless. Why would you come to this site and complain? Any rational hunman being would contact the person he is upset with through Twitter or stop following that account.
So just stop, I am going to delete any more tweets, oops, I mean posts whining about the twitter account.

Tokyo has got some loooong arms. Maybe his defense did impact Lacey’s scoring last night. This team doesn’t have enough offensive options to win many games with Lacey shooting that poorly and Turner’s minutes limited by fouls. The kids worked their tails off to get back in the game and to stay in the game as long as they did.

As for the offense in general, it was a thing of beauty when Lo was running it. He understood the curls and the options that would pop up depending on the cuts and screens that were taking place. Cat looks unsure of what to do. He wastes 5-10 seconds getting the team into the offense. In fairness, he may not be getting the kind of off the ball movement from his team mates that he needs either.

The reason Cody has been so good for the offense is that he knows where the next pass needs to go before he receives the ball. Cat is a dribble first PG. Everything with him has to be created by penetration. He needs to add another dimension or two.

Let me preface this by saying this was a winnable game no matter how the referees impacted it. The mental and physical letdown in the 1st half killed us. And Trevor’s off-night shooting the ball didn’t help. However, I do maintain we got “Unluckie” once again.

Last year Luckie targeted our best player (TJ) in every game he refereed. TJ fouled out or was in foul trouble in virtually every game. Last night, which two players were our hot shooters in the 1st half? Ralston and Kyle. Who ended up going to the bench in the 1st half with a couple of fouls each? Ralston and Kyle. You don’t need to call a lot of fouls or a disproportionate number of fouls to make an impact on the game. You just need to target the right guys.

Let’s say the same guy refereed the Duke game on Saturday, and gave both Trevor and Ralston two fouls early in the 1st half. Obviously you cannot predict what would have happened, but I don’t even want to think what the score would have been with those two guys missing the last 10 minutes of the half.

Some will say I’m whining (probably), and I am paranoid (definitely). I just know I wish the ACC would get that guy out of the league. I hate it every time he’s out there.

Bullseye. They shot 56% overall and 63% (5-8) from three. If Paige misses just one of those threes, we win the ballgame. Really that simple in my eyes. Paige just had a out of the norm hot hand last night. He couldn’t miss. That’s the difference in the game. Nothing else to talk about really.

Other than Abu was really impressive last night. He played a very smart and well executed game at his position. And Lacey shot was off but he was 10-10 from the free throw line.

This team has made a lot of progress but to me evserything slows to a halt with Barber at the point. He dribbles to much, rarely penetrates and appears to be trying to do too much by himself. Not sure what his role should be but I don’t think he is the answer at point guard. I hear all the praise about his speed etc but after watching many games I just don’t see any real progress. I believe he would be better coming off the bench even though we have few other options for a starter replacement. He appears to play scared/tight.

UNC is one of the best offensive rebounding teams, and they are taller than us at almost every position. We have a way of making contested shots not look contested. I think we played as solid a game as we could have, but when you have a tough opponent all the little mistakes on backdoors, etc., become magnified. The whistle blowers did us no favors on a lot of touch fouls that were not fouls in the Duke game, or the game where Anya had 10 blocks. This led to us falling into a ten point hole that ultimately sealed it despite late game heroics.

Couple of observations…..came home tired last night and said….GOOD NIGHT…

The Officiating crew was UGLY (Functionally….as well as appearance). That crew probably went out and had “KH 4 EVER” tattooed on their chests after the ACC cut him. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist….and don’t think that Sky5 flying constantly over my house…since it is direct line with where it is “housed” and the TV station is so that Jim Goodmon can monitor my activities.

BUT, that crew was subtly sloppy in allowing a more aggressive defense by UNC and also making some totally WRONG or perhaps INEPT…lest one be questioning their bias.

They DID have an impact on our poor shooting and performance in the first half… e.g. Turner’s two quickies. BJ suffered a similar outcome.

Bottom line…you can NOT shoot, for whatever reason…..as bad as we did for 30 or so minutes and expect to win. The Ref’s did not “Help” UNC’s 60% shooting.

We were starting to come back and playing pretty good D in the beginning of the first half. THEN listen to the whistles. Look up at the Team Fouls display. We had 8….UNC 2. HMMM.

NOW…flame me for the above….but the Ref’s DID impact the game. Maybe not intentionally….maybe they like ORW or whatever. BUT! They had an impact.

NOW…we also helped shoot ourselves in the foot. Lacey was obviously OFF last night. Gott, reluctantly, said that he got off to a slow start. Interestingly, Gott did not (in the radio interview) comment on Cat. Cat’s performance last night speaks volumes. We would really have been better off with Tyler Lewis.

    I OFFER the following….
    MP > 29
    FG > 1 – 5 > 20%
    3PFG > 0 -1
    FT > 3 > 4 > 75%
    Reb > 2
    Asst > 4
    Block > 0
    Steal > 1
    Per Foul > 1
    TURNOVER > 4

Obviously NOT a tiger on Defense. The perimeter shooters had a field day with us. Looked, and played SLOPPY (out of control?)….BIG TIME.

Tyler is gone….and I think that we got the worst part of the bargain. He is a gifted player….but does not have the “smarts” to run the show. He has to “concentrate” to run the floor. He can NOT think and move. He moves with INSTINCT…

Put him at the #2 spot. Let Lacey run the PG. Use Martin or Dez or whoever as a sub. Cat will begin to score again….if NOT…then he and Chase Canon can have some great conversations….

Washington was one of our salvations last night…

It was a pretty good game….even with our shooting….and we did not fold or cave. But, it still went down as a LOSS and had the potential to be a W.

We need to make sure that we take our “A” game to FSU. No BIG crowd will be there, but they will do that UGLY war chant. FSU has been struggling and beating us might be a Semi-Signature win…

    GO PACK…

UNC shot lights out because most of their shots were close-range and in some cases just plain layups. If I were coaching this team (which thankfully I’m not), after the miserable defensive performances I’ve see so far this season, I’d consider showing some zone defense. I would have done this last night after being plastered in the paint early like we were. If nothing else, the sudden defensive change might have thrown them out of their offense at least long enough for us to avoid a big deficit.

Lacey is our best player, but he doesn’t need to have to run the point AND do everything else. Barber is probably still our best ball handler despite his warts, but until he WANTS to be the leader on this team, we’ll probably continue to struggle in this area.

The 3 calls that bothered me the most were Anya’s 5th, plus the two they called on Cody Martin against Paige and Tokoto. It still appears that when all-ACC players wearing blue engage in physical contact with other teams’ players at critical stages, the big dogs always get the calls. The Martin twins have contributed a lot of little things that have really helped the team, and Cody Martin shouldn’t be blamed any more than anyone else for the loss.

I didn’t like the final time out we called, which I thought gave UNC time to set up their defense. Down 2, I would have called the TO, but not down 3.

The last two games showed a lot about this team, but the next two games may be the most pivotal of the season. The goal for this team (and program) should be not just to finish at or above .500 but to finish at least in the top 4 in the ACC standings. This team has shown that it’s capable of doing that, but what still has to be overcome is our dismal history of being a road kill team. It’s time to change that.

When Barber plays loose he is more prone to turnovers, that equals too many for a point guard. I agree that Barber should get the ball in a position where he can slash to the basketball, look for the short jumper, easy layup or find a teammate, and getting more time at offguard may help him exploits his dynamic skills. We use Lacey as point sometimes, but how about we use Caleb as a point forward also?
