    Watched about 2/3 of the UCF/ECU game. They’re good, better than we are. Legit NFL talent at WR with a capable QB. Inexplicable loss at UConn, but other losses were Penn State in the first game and then @ Mizzou. They beat an improving South Florida team 16-0, which was our only common opponent.

    Don’t care what O’Leary did in the past. He’s paid his dues and had to serve in purgatory at Central Florida. He’s a heck of a coach and word is he’s going to retire at the end of the season (68 y/o). That means they’re going to be playing hard to give their coach one last win. If our D-Line repeats the perforance they had against UNC, that should put their QB under enough pressure to give us an edge.

    You know….we REALLY set ourselves up also….

    I could do a monolog on the “BitCoin” bowl. Do a Wiki on it….

    Laughing at one’s self is considered to be healthy because it exposes your own “weaknesses” and you don’t take your self seriously….

    We got INTO the BitCoin Bowl due to some “Back room speculation and manipulation” by certain conferences….and the process was hardly OPEN and Transparent (Hmmm….where I heard THAT before?). That mirrors the BitCoin “index” or value.

    The BitCoin chose two teams….for a Bowl whose matchup was the result of “Manipulations” and is sponsored by a “currency” that is so murky that it makes ObamaCare look easy to follow….

    They chose teams who’s “value” varies from game to game…..and ONE of the coaches is the ultimate “gambler”….

    All I HOPE….is that we did NOT agree to accepting the Bowl Payout in BitCoins….

    State didn’t score a plus with the opponent, as anytime you play a team outside the power five, unless maybe it’s Boise State, you won’t elevate your program much by winning, but if you lose, you’ll be seen as being on the mid-major level. Thank John Swofford for the Notre Dame “addition” that cost the ACC a tier one spot.

    But the location is a plus in my opinion. I know how bad traveling to Florida is around Christmas, but you can’t beat the St. Petersburg location. St. Pete and the area around it (excluding Tampa) is pretty nice. I spent a week at Holmes Beach last month, and it’s only 30 minutes south of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. You won’t find a better place down there for R&R than Anna Maria Island; they have spacious sandy beaches without the congestion of Myrtle Beach.

    If you’re driving down, I highly advise taking I-295 around Jax to I-10 west, and take it all the way to I-75; they’re working on 301 between I-10 and Ocala, and you’ll make better time on the longer interstate route to Tampa instead of the 301 shortcut. The main thing is to avoid I-4 and Orlando.

    For me, the biggest disappointment of this bowl is the fact it is one of the early games, so the team will only get to use about 9 of their allotted practice sessions (as per the coach).

    Well, at least weather won’t be an issue as Tropicana Field (home of the Tampa Bay Rays) is always a comfy constant 72 degrees. Before and after the game, Ferg’s is a very popular sports bar (with good food) that is located at 1320 Central Ave- just a one block walk to and from The Trop. They also have game day parking, but usually a bit more costly than the stadium. Parking there (limited) does make leaving a bit easier. Ferg’s should be jam-packed with hundreds of fans. The place is very large and accommodating.It should be an excellent game, and a good time for all.

    M. Valdes-Scantling went to Lakewood High, just 4 -5 miles south of the Trop. Lakewood has already promised to bring a large crowd. Lakewood has had an excellent program for quite a while. The Pack may be helped in recruiting in the Central-West Florida area.

    Is the Bitcoin bowl our preferred bowl? No, BUT there are many positives. It is FL, which is a nice place to visit for the team. It helps in recruiting, not just the FL kids, but also others to see they can go to FL at Christmas. it is NOT Detroit, Shreveport, or Boise. Even the Yankee bowl, while it would be cool to be in NYC and play in Yankee stadium is not ideal in December.

    St Pete is a great area and will be an enjoyable trip and a reward. The stadium from what I understand is a dog pile but the area will be nice. And considering where we were last year, considering we have a chance to go 8-5, all in all many positives.

    Interesting. A bowl game sponsored by fictitious currency. I wonder if that’s how they’ll pay the teams. Beats Detroit in…well any month actually.

    I’m sure we didn’t plan on doing any recruiting in Michigan.

    If you’ve never been to the Trop, I believe that you’ll be pleasantly surprised. While it was built with baseball in mind only, is is adequate for football. The Trop gets a good deal of bad press which, coming from someone who has been to too many Rays games to count, is somewhat undeserving. The main complaint, and realistically the only valid complaint, is the complaint about the four circular catwalks above the field. Batted balls do occasionally make contact with the rings, but it is not an every game occurrence. Other stadiums have their nuances also such as ivy, green monsters, and hills in center field. Regardless, the rings do not come into play in football.

    The Trop has clear lines of sight throughout, an abundance of food sites and choices, a large variety of beer options, and restrooms close to all aisles. There are numerous other amenities such as the Rays Tank, the Captain Morgan Deck, the Party Deck, Bay Grill, Center Field Street, Brew House Express and a newly completed 360 degree walkway inside the seating area. It has a genuine party atmosphere.

    State didn’t score a plus with the opponent… can’t argue with that. But the rest is merely valid opinion. Without looking, who did UCF play in the Fiesta Bowl. Did UCF’s opponent suffer the indignity of losing to a non Power 5 opponent thereby being seen as being on the mid-major level? Baylor doesn’t think so and neither does anybody who knows football see them that way.

    Nice to criticize Swoffard for any reason — true or false — but ND didn’t cost us a tier 1 spot, the shenanigans of the committee did that. Until the committee maneuvered the rankings to give the BIG another spot, we were set just fine. Furthermore IMO the ACC getting to play ND 5 times a year is worth an occasional tier 1 spot. While it could have been, it just wasn’t this year.

    We can be pleased with the year-over-year progress but still be kinda pissed we got screwed out of a better bowl — they’re not mutually exclusive.

    I’m pleased we’re bowling somewhere — anywhere — after that BC game. But I just don’t see the correlation between playing a bowl game in Florida and recruiting exposure in florida.

    I’m seriously asking here: can recruits come to the bowl game as our guest?

    Otherwise, I doubt the line is long for high school football players to go to the Bitcoin Bowl in St. Pete on Dec 26.

    Are they attending our bowl practices?

    Where exactly is the exposure?

    Lakewood High School coach Cory Moore plans to bring his team to the game. Marques Valdes-Scantling’s former high school coach said: “It’s a wonderful chance to see young guys they’ve actually touched before and how they’ve transitioned. It gives our young guys a standard, something to shoot for.” Hopefully more high school coaches in Florida will do the same.

    On another note, here is an interesting human interest story about a kid from Jarvis “the rabbit catcher” Byrd’s (#1) hometown of Pahokee, FL. I’ve been to Pahokee many times, and I’m truly amazed at what some of these young men have accomplished, especially Jarvis with his ACL setbacks.
    It’s a good read. Give it a shot if you have a little time.

    Where exactly is the exposure?

    So you’re saying that in spite of all the local sponsorships and business/gov’t tie-ins, and the associatec economic impact, you think the bowl game, and the week long schedule of bowl activities leading up to it, gets no additional local hype or media coverage?

    Two things worth mentioning about the State of Florida that are not readily apparent…
    unles you lived there or traveled there extensively…

    1. Florida is HUGE… from So Miami to Pensacola is 16 hours or twice as far from Murphy to Manteo…
    2. Most of Florida (esp. Central and North ) is as rural as Eastern NC… and there’s not much to keep kids there…

    A guy like Dave Doeren would be well received there by both parents and kids and could easily pick up more than a few quality kids that for whatever good reason won’t be headed to Miami, Gainesville or Tallahassee…

    One thing (re:Wolfanatic) is becoming abundantly clear…. High School Coaches ‘like’ Coach DD !

    When was the last time anybody felt good about saying that about any State coach?

    I happy we are bowling I can see the change coming. I’m glad DD is leading us I think we are going to be a force in the next couple of years if the staff can stay together. It seems like the players are buying in and also if we have time DD has our guys prepared to play. I know it will not happen but it would be great to see uncheat get beat in their and get the death penalty all in the same day but hey there is a santa right

    I’m not saying that all — necessarily. I’m just saying I don’t understand it. If high school coaches are taking their teams to the game (as referenced above), then obviously that’s good exposure.

    Bitcoin? is that anything like a coinpack?

    It’s a mostly Internet-based currency that many in the Libertarian crowd like because it exists (for now) pretty much outside of government control. Bitcoin has gotten fairly popular and you can use it at a number of businesses.

    Exactly. Think of it as an additional spring practice with a real game at the end.

    As for recruiting, getting some kids that might be interested in coming to play for State in to watch the team practice and see how the coaches and players go about their business simply can’t hurt.

    Thanks! I did and I agree whole heartedly — it is a good read. Makes me appreciate what opportunity I had even if I didn’t take nearly full advantage of it.

    Doeren and our staff getting to know and being known by the Florida ‘country boy’ coaches is a very cool thing. They’ll get tips from coaches who have players who can play in Div. I, boys like Anton Bolden. Coach Doeren is just what these kind of young men need, family away from home with teammates who will keep the on the straight and narrow. IMO What he did for Shad after Shad screwed up is just the kind of thing many young men need.

    What our team needs more than anything is a bunch of ‘rabbit catchers.’

    BitPay, the Atlanta-based company that paid 1.5 million over 3 years ( a large portion in Bitcoins) to ESPN Events (an ESPN subsidiary) to sponsor the St.Petersburg Bowl partnered with Trucoin to have 5 Bitcoin ATMs in and around the Trop. Ferg’s Bar will take them as payment for food and beverages as will a few other joints close to RaysWorld. BTW, the dude, Antonio Gallippi, he is BitPay, has a questionable past….but who’s asking? Dance with the currency that brought you…
