NC State 83 Tennessee 72

It was the Ralston Turner show, ya’ll. Turner had a career high of 33 points on eight 3-pointers. He finished 9-for-18 from the field and 8-for-17 from 3-pointers, missing the school mark by a single basket. Trevor Lacey had 20 points and eight rebounds that also included some Ralston Turner-like three pointers! And, of course, what would a night of Wolfpack Basketball be without a powerhouse slam by Beejay Anya (that I ask you click here to view) to help our traffic out a little!

Tennessee’s pressure and traps served to help State score more easily than it served to disrupt as the Wolfpack shot a blistering 63.2% from two point range (12 of 19) in addition to 42.3% from three point range on 11 of 26 shooting.

The two interesting developments last night that stood out to me was: (1) the amount of playing time and solid performance turned in by Desmond Lee; and (2) Abdul-Malik Abu’s court presence during his 29 minutes of playing time while relegating Lennard Freeman to the bench. Abu finished with eight points.

State is now 9-2 and has a KEY stretch of non-conference games against West Virginia (currently #31 in the RPI); Louisiana Tech (lost to Syracuse by two points); and Cincinnati (#66 in the RPI BEFORE beating Top 25 ranked, San Diego State last night).

NC State defeated the Volunteers for the second season in a row. Last year’s win played a major role in earning the Wolfpack’s third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. While the Vols might not be in tournament contention this year, they are improving much quicker than many expected. Tennessee is now 4-4, but have played a brutal out of conference schedule that ranks near the Top 10 of the entire country. The SEC currently has but a SINGLE ranked team…so, who knows how the year may end up for the Vols.

Very good must win. Turner was obviously en fuego. The three he hit from almost the wolf was Dunleavy-esque. Very impressive.

After a brief scare by missing 3 or 4 FTs in a row, the team calmed down and hit their last 9 to put away the win. Good job.

Saturday’s game will be a big one. Good opponent, MSG, Saturday night national TV. Let’s see what they can do in Gotham.

This is about the fourth game where it is very obvious the positive impact Dez Lee has when he is on the court. It has perplexed me why he has not been on the court more.

Wish we could further develop our relationship with Tennessee Vols by setting up a football series(again), buy out of some really crappy games with EK, ODU, SA, Troy. I’d welcome getting beat by them for the opportunity, even if it cost us a bowl. I’d go to their place twice for 1 trip to Raleigh. On a basketball note, the guys did well. Hope it carries over to WV. by the way what happend to KW? Missed the first half and didn’t see Kyle til late down the stretch. You always wonder in this day and age when you have perceived depth, who is going to start to feel slighted with regard to PT.

coach13 get used to wandering where guys are…Gott’s rotations have not and I have no reason to believe will ever make sense. I love every one of them but until Cat develops more confidence or consistency and until Lenard….well lets just stay focused on getting Cat over that hill. MORE DEZ LEE

PackofMac beat me to it … but I thought Dez was a nice contributor last night. I think he deserves court time every game. Just to make sure the guards have their legs at the end of the game. Was that our first successful alley-oop of the season? And I think Dez got the assist. We’ve certainly missed a few.

Listened to the game, didn’t watch (Saturday’s game might make me decide whether to buy TV for the basketball season). Yes, we need more from the bigs, but from what I understand, we didn’t throw a pass into the post all game. Was that true?

I have seen BJ make a couple of nice post moves this season, but if we never get it inside, they can’t exactly score. I understand it’s harder against a zone, but I just don’t think we’ll see 8 3-pointers from Ralston every game – although I’d love it!

I dunno, I think the rotations played out ok last night. Abu just played really well, and when we went small late he was the ‘big’ that was out there.

I think last night had more to do with how Abu was playing well and match-ups – specifically defensively – more than anything. I’m glad we’ve got such depth, and I think the guys know that match-ups and hot hands will go a long way towards playing time more than anything. Some games we’ll need Freeman’s defense and rebounding, others we’ll need KW’s athleticism and ability to knock down 15 – 18 footers.

Totally agree on Des being part of the rotation, spelling Lacey and Barber while Turner and Caleb rotate. Des is a pretty good defender and can really attack the rim.

Only a few. It’s true, we’ve got to get the big guys going – outside of Anya though I think we’re possibly looking at ‘post play by committee’ on a game-by-game basis. The high-low hasn’t been great, but if the guys do the job defensively and on the boards then maybe we can squeak by in a lot of games.

Thankfully, college basketball is ruled by the backcourts, and we’ve got a pretty good backcourt. We definitely go as they go. Get the interior going and we could be cookin’.

Des brings a more aggressive D into play when it is necessary. I also think he does a better job a creating offense. Without him on the court, I feel like we have guys standing around only to make a couple of passes to ultimately jack up a 3 ball. Des will drive and keep his head up to look for an easy pass to a layup or dunk opportunity. KW is just a spaz and it cost us in our loss to Wofford. Can the guy get a rebound without looking like he just got tazed?!?!

Nice win in a must win game. We have another one against WV coming up on Saturday. The Wofford loss put us behind schedule, so we really need WV to get back on schedule.

The Cincy game looks tough. They’re big and physical, much like Purdue.

This is about the fourth game where it is very obvious the positive impact Dez Lee has when he is on the court.

While I agree that Dez is valuable, there are two areas where Dez concerns me:
    1) Sometimes he goes into “Purvis-drive” mode and puts his head down and heads for the hole.
    2) Stupid fouls. Sometimes he goes into “Howell-foul” mode.

My favorite Des play last night was the alley oop to him where he went for the dunk in traffic and got fouled. We need more of that aggressiveness. Loved seeing him get those minutes last night.

As for Washington, I’m okay with him getting reduced minutes. He is too willing to take long jump shots, and he is only shooting 41% on the season.

wufpup76, I saw your comment on Dez’s vertical during the game, I don’t know if anybody mentioned it in that thread, but his vertical was measured at 44″ this year.

    Which is just O_o

^Yeah, if you get a chance to watch a replay of the game I highly suggest checking out the play Tau is referencing … it was amazingly athletic and almost a spectacular finish.

    “KW is just a spaz…” – hilarious!!!!
I don’t know what has gotten into him, but somebody told him he could take a 3 every game and, even though he hit one a while back, I don’t think that is a good idea. If someone is going to miss a three, it should be Ralston, Trevor, or maybe Caleb.
But a 6’9″ guy that can hit a 12-15 foot jumper is pretty valuable. Especially a left hander. He just needs to figure out his spots on the floor, and when to take the shot. If he can just be a little more reliable shooting from that post position, that is a way to beat the zone. And when his man steps out to contest the shot, there’s some space behind him for a pass.

Cat Barber had 8 assists and one turnover. To me, that is the number one stat for the PG. So important to success and team play. Now if he could get better at dribble penetration and feeding the bigs he would quell my concerns over losing Tyler Lewis.

BTW, Lewis set a single-season school record last year for assist-to-turnover ratio according to the Media Guide.

It is strange that Cat’s line looked that good because he didn’t seem to be having a great game and his minutes were clearly encroached upon by Lee. But, that is 100% consistent with the point that we all know — as Cat goes, the Wolfpack goes.

I noticed a pretty big foul disparity in our favor. I was looking at the box score we had 9 more rebounds 5 more turnovers we shot the ball a little better than them… then it hit me in the last place a state fan would ever look to explain a win.

We shot 18 more fouls than they did. Were they reaching on our guards or were we attacking the paint all night. I’m happy and excited for the win but getting that type of the FT advantage again seems probably about as likely as Ralston getting 8 threes in a game.

Again, I didn’t watch the game. I’d love it if our guards were attacking the paint like that and drawing fouls.

Tennessee came into the game somewhere around 320th in the country in defensive fouls, so that was a normal kind of game for them. If the SEC refs start studying tendencies they may need to carry more players.

Des is taking away some of Caleb’s minutes right now and the allure of Abu and his offensive potential has relegated Frenchie to the pine. At some point during the season, we are going to need Frenchie in a game just to rebound. I hope he hasn’t been purged from the rotation.

KW looks like he is on speed. He needs to relax.

On one of their sites, someone brought up the foul disparity and blamed it on home cooking. Every Vol fan who responded disagreed, and said their team has been way too foul prone all year. To their credit they did not blame the refs. It looked fair to me, but I guess I am a little biased.

^Yeah, imo we played a pretty clean first half and the whistles went our way more often than not.

2nd half was messier, but we were aggressive in spots attacking the rim and then of course they started fouling late. Thankfully we did well from the line for the most part.

As for the foul disparity, they were fouling a lot in the last 2 minutes trying to play catch up. They did out foul us in the first half too though, so some of it was too many defensive fouls and some of it was playing catch up.

I gotta say it…just can’t hold it in anymore. CAT is a strange player. He is VERY good when he finds some aggressive energy (very rare) and drives the lane/turns up the speed on offensive. His defense is good.

However, the 1/2 court or running the offense game is just really bad. I mean he looks 1/2 a$$ when he isn’t pushing it. He doesn’t run the offense much if any and he NEVER looks nor moves to find a shot. I know he is the PG not the shooting guard but when he isn’t driving or pushing the ball he is really non-existent on offense.

Not dogging him just calling the way I see it. Stat wise he seems to be fine and he seems to not turn it over much so that’s good. How in the heck do we get him to be intense on offense! Our 1/2 court offense is just slow and not all that productive.

I am happy with the win and we worked hard. Just saying our offense and PG just doesn’t seem to be too hot at this point.

I’ll have to keep an eye on it, but I think the stagnation in the half court offense is about 1/3 Cat, and 2/3rds everybody else. I don’t think our bigs are particularly good at running the high post.

Watch when we start to get into our half court set. A lot of times, guys get to their initial positions, and then stop moving, and Cat is standing out there dribbling waiting for somebody to do something.

Now, maybe Cat could be a little better at directing traffic, but he’s only a sophomore, so I wouldn’t expect him to be good enough in the offense to be able to tell everyone else where they should be.

And really, Gott’s teams have taken a while to gel. It seems like every year, we’re out of the tournament, and then go on a run to end the season and squeak in. This team just feels like it has a lot of potential to me.
