N.C. State vs. La. Tech – 7pm

N.C. State Wolfpack (9-3) vs. La. Tech Bulldogs (8-3) – 7pm @ PNC Arena; Tv: Espn3 only

Louisiana Tech team page ; GoPack game preview with links to game notes and stats

The Wolfpack will look to get back in to the win column tonight at home against Louisiana Tech … After losing the “basketball game” against West Virginia on Saturday night in Madison Square Garden, the Pack return home to face another tough opponent in the Bulldogs. N.C. State struck out in their only road/neutral games in the non-conference portion of the schedule, so protecting home court now becomes that much more important.

La. Tech enters this contest having faced one common opponent with N.C. State – a 65-52 win over Jackson St. Two of their three losses have come against decent opponents, coming close but falling short at both Temple and Syracuse; the Bulldogs also lost at UL Lafayette. La. Tech doesn’t have any signature victories to speak of this season. Given the Bulldogs’ schedule, any hope of competing for an at-large NCAA berth may already be by the wayside – unless they basically run the table.

That’s not to suggest that La. Tech isn’t a pretty good team. The Bulldogs returned the majority of the team nucleus that won 29 games a season ago.  The ’13-’14 edition of La. Tech finished in a four-way tie for first in C-USA, garnering the 1 seed in the C-USA Tournament before falling short to Tulsa in the title game. Even with the high number of victories, La. Tech’s overall schedule strength relegated them to the NIT.

This season, La. Tech was the consensus pick to win C-USA. The Bulldogs’ main challengers look to be Old Dominion and UTEP; Tulsa has moved on to the AAC. Part of the reason La. Tech was generally picked to win the conference was due to their retention of head coach Michael White. White, in his 4th season at La. Tech, flirted with the openings at both Missouri and Tennessee after the close of last season. White is on pace to record his third 20+ win season at La. Tech in four seasons and will likely be a rumored name for any potential power conference job opening after the season. Local tie: White is the son of Duke AD Kevin White.

As for style of play – guess what? They press. After handling Tennessee’s pressure fairly well, the Pack melted down in the first half against the physical, unrelenting pressure of West Virginia before looking mostly competent in the 2nd half. So, for the Wolfpack, another test – and opportunity – to get better and beat pressure.

Let’s see what happens! Hopefully the Wolfpack can put together a good game and enjoy the Christmas break from a basketball point of view. The Pack won’t be in action again until a week from tonight on December 30th. Please share your thoughts, enjoy the game, and Go Pack!

I never understood why anyone thought we would be better after losing buckets and Lewis

Warren, eh, no replacing a guy like that.

But Barber was as good as Lewis on average, and much better by the end of the season. So you assume he improves, everyone else gets a little better, Lacey comes in and averages 15ish, it’s not crazy to think we’d be decent this year without those two.

Lacey has kept up his end of the bargain.
Lewis had guts that I never saw on cat.
I also believe buckets covered up a lot of flaws.

It’s pretty clear that some major changes have been made in our offensive sets and we’re hesitantly working out the kinks…

Kids GOTT some thing on their minds… and hearing voices in their heads…

That said, I’ve already more Pass first -shoot second and more movement and better positioning in the paint than all season…
The side effect of that is our FG% …

Now … that FG% will go up in the second half and with a little defense, we can get back in this game…
    Otherwise… it ain’t looking too good…

Gottfried should have never benched Tyler Lewis. I know he was small etc., but that kid could play. He knew how to run an offense like a QB and he had sooooo much heart. Cat seems to be a street baller–he can’t play organized basketball to save his life. And Gottfried’s lack of defense is really showing. I know 3 straight trips to the NCAA sounds great and all, but I don’t see us making another one with this group of guys, meaning we’re out of the tourney for at least 2-3 years. And Gott may be out of a job by that time.

I remember I said people would be bemoaning the kids off Lewis.

Cat was NEVER better than Lewis. It’s simply because we saw Cat play in smaller doses last year. I was VERY underwhelmed with his play, but we all tricked ourselves into thinking, “Oh, he’ll get better during the offseason.” NOPE!

In all seriousness we no longer run the UCLA high post in the half court, it’s always a 1-3-1 zone offense and we suck at it. Not sure if it’s the players, the coaches, or both but it needs to be scrapped and replaced with something Gottfried is supposed to have apprenticed under.

    Working out the kinks.
That is a very ‘glass half full’ way if looking at it.

How in the world does Washington position himself to allow his teammate to take him out of position on defense when no one else is around?

Better enery this half, can’t make a layup

Even if State magically starts making shots it doesn’t matter, we still can’t defend our way out of a wet paper sack.

We have no answers for competent defensive teams. It’s Lacey and Turner or bust.

    Tonight it’s bust.

La Tech knows us better than we know ourselves.

Gosh, if this is how this team responds to defensive pressure, I can hardly wait for Duke, Louisville, UNC, Syracuse, Virginia, etc.

There’s that weak 5 feet off the shooter hold out your hand but cheating towards the basket defense. Glad it works so well.

La Tech has an rpi of 200+. No.

Wofford has an rpi in the 40’s. Define it how you want.
