N.C. State vs. Cincinnati – 4pm

N.C. State Wolfpack (10-3) vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (8-3) – 4pm @ PNC Arena; TV: EspnU

Cincinnati team page ; GoPack game preview with links to game notes and stats

N.C. State was able to enjoy a nice Christmas break after rallying for an important win against Louisiana Tech last Tuesday. The Wolfpack will look to ring in the New Year in a similar manner, as they face the Cincinnati Bearcats today in the last non-conference game of the regular season. The Pack has an opportunity to close out their OOC schedule with a respectable 11-3 mark and a very workable RPI number (it sits at 56 entering today’s contest). From the N.C. State perspective, it’s a chance to add another Top 100 win (Cincy is currently at #70 and has a good chance to end up in the Top 100 RPI) and bolster its potential at-large resume.

Cincinnati enters today’s contest with a very good win over San Diego St. in tow and respectable losses to Ole Miss (neutral court), at Nebraska in double overtime, and versus VCU. Of course, the majority of Cincinnati’s 8-3 mark was built with head coach Mick Cronin on the sidelines. Unfortunately, the college basketball world was dealt a large dose of perspective with the recent news of Coach Cronin being diagnosed with an unruptured brain aneurysm. Cronin missed the home loss to VCU and home win over Wagner, and will not be able to coach in today’s game versus the Wolfpack.  We of course wish the best for Mick Cronin in his treatment and hopeful recovery. Larry Davis, former head coach at Furman, is filling in during Cronin’s absence.

The Bearcats entered this season off of four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, but lost quite a bit from last season’s squad. Given the roster turnover and unfortunate circumstances surrounding their head coach, this season’s squad is very much in flux. In true Cincinnati style though, they have been competitive by utilizing their trademark very physical defense to create turnovers and scoring opportunities. The Bearcat offense has not been great, but the majority of their games have been relatively low scoring, ‘slug it out’ affairs (ugly for the win) with a focus on generating offense from the paint. It could be a very interesting contrast of styles in today’s game. Hopefully, the Wolfpack can take care of the ball and put pressure on Cincinnati by scoring in transition off of rebounds/turnovers – as opposed to playing Cincy’s game of ‘we will out-grind and turn you over in the halfcourt’. Hitting (good) open shots helps as well … just sayin’ 🙂

As always, please share your thoughts on today’s contest, enjoy the game, and Go Pack!

(I really like the subtle use of the instrumental ‘Get Lucky’ in the background of this video)

Gottfried not pulling any punches in the postgame radio interview. Blamed himself, said the fans should get their money back, talked about putting everyone on the line and looking at who should get to play. It’s a privelege to play here, and guys weren’t ready. Not acceptable.

Haven’t really heard him speak like this before, but it seems to be cumulative from the WVa and La Tech games + today’s performance.

44rules, you picked up the same thing I did. Gottfried usually has a positive spin on at least one aspect of a loss, and never poo-poo’s his team. You can hear the anger and frustration in his voice.

Never heard this level of negativity from Gottfried.

Yeah. Surprised me too. Maybe it’ll light a fire, maybe it won’t. We need an explosion of improvement or we’re, at best, NIT bound.

Wow, I wasn’t even aware that Cronin wasn’t coaching until after the game. Lose at home. Lose at home by double digits. Lose at home by double digits to an assistant coach . . . .

It really should not come as a surprise as we had played like complete arse the past two (now three) games. Going to be a long season.

    Consistency.

Nc state is quite a consisent program. Just cute enough to attract decent talent. Unlucky and inept enough to whiff on coaching. Stuck in mediocrity.

Gott in his fourth year is the same Gott in first year. We’ve got him for at least two more just spare yourself the misery and don’t watch. A lot of folks are getting it the attendance has been atrocious this year.

We’ll be lucky of this is the same pig.

    Can’t panic yet though.

I heard presser and was thrilled by what gott had to say….but talk is talk. And Gottfried’s next good defensive team will be his first.

Chops. Why are you in this group?

Did you not get the picture when you were ensconsed in the DD is over his head crowd?

I’m sorry, but you do not belong in the December bunch.

I have no other way to convey.

    Cowdog,
Instead of running down other posters maybe you could add some of your wisdom as to why you think this team is not awful.

Anything short of a great acc record means not at best.

Lack of consistent team defense, physical toughness, and lack of a take-charge floor leader are our big problems right now.

But as bad as things may look right now, we’ve got a long way yet to fall before we become a football school.

God help us if we do.

    CD,
I am being honest and not derogatory when I ask that. There have been many legitimate concerns brought up on this thread. Insted of dismissing all of these posters, I would love to have a discussion about it.

I realize you and I do not have a good history so I an really trying to have a discussion with you. If you have no desire to do that then I will back off.

Well, Florida just lost to Florida State by tipping in a missed last second FSU shot into their own goal. I suppose for every Chandler Parsons 75-footer to win against N.C. State you’re eventually going to be due to lose a game in such a fashion.

So hey – we’re not alone tonight!
