As has been Mark Gottfried’s philosophy since arriving in Raleigh, the Wolfpack’s nonconference schedule is again very formidable this year. But tonight’s game is not expected to be one of the tough ones as (linked here) you will see Jackson State at #310 of 351 Division One college basketball teams.

You can click here and click here if for some reason you want to jump deeper into previews of Jackson State.

With some of these smaller D-I basketball programs, it sometimes seems like they turn over an entire roster from one season to the next. Almost half of Jackson State’s borderline-excessive 18-man roster is new for the 2014-15 season, one obvious sign of a program with a second-year coach in full rebuilding mode.

The Tigers finished last year 11-20 (7-11), which was only good enough for seventh in the 10-team SWAC; the program has not had a winning season since 2011. They bottomed out in 2012 with a seven-win campaign that somehow did not cost ninth-year head coach Tevester Anderson his job. The following season did, though.

[snip]

In addition to the weak two-point shooting, the Tigers were also poor from beyond the arc, where they shot 29.3%. They were one of the least-frequent three-point shooting teams in the nation (way to recognize your limitations, fellas!), so they were getting very little to speak of from the ol’ bonusphere.

There is no indication from their exhibition games that they are suddenly shifting into a three-heavy offense heading into 2015. Oh, and another thing: one of those exhibition games was against Tougaloo College, a tiny private school that plays at the NAIA level. Jackson State lost by 21.

We haven’t spent too much time on preseason prognostications simply because there will be plenty of time in this early part of the season to merge the preseason hype with what we are seeing on the court…but, we’ll start to dive deeper into basketball in the days to come! In the meantime, we highly encourage you to keep up with a whole host of individual topic in real time by clicking here.

Really like the make-up of this team. Quick on the perimeter, long and athletic on the inside. This could be a really solid defensive team … we have guys who can hit jumpers.

Get this thing fine-tuned by late January / early February and we could be a tough out.

(Yes, I know we are playing Jackson St. – just commenting that the team looks to have good potential.)

Bryant U. is up 6 at the half @ the defending national champs …

CheatVision is now on EspnU – *Nx-Cheat vs. Central. I don’t have the volume on, but I’m sure the announcers have already extolled the virtues of the great, integrity-laden, and honorable Roy Williams about 50 times already.

Sweatband forward must be one of our position designations

BSW still a D liability as far as leaving his man free. Good teams will punish us for that.

Barber and Lacey really do play well together. They have excellent chemistry.

How illegal would it be, hypothetically speaking, if the twins switched jerseys at halftime at some point?

Dez Lee should not run the point apparently.

I’m thinking they’d get away with it … not sure what the penalty is though 🙂

    Some future Pack opponents tonight:

Boise St. leading San Diego (Ron Burgundy!) by 7 late in the 2nd
Tenn down 13 late in the 2nd vs. VCU
West Virginia down 9 vs. Monmouth w/ about 7 min. to play in the 2nd
Wake Forest up 11 vs. Ashville w/ about 7 min. to play

BTW, I do now think we play 9-10 every night. Fun team, at least with real potential to be.

Even fun in garbage time, this bunch. I know, I know…Jackson State. But even in context, I’m quite encouraged.

    Ditto me that.
Just keep getting better little by little, that’s all I ask.

    Thoughts:

    – I knew very little about Trevor Lacey coming into this season, so he was the guy I had no idea what to expect from. I came away from this super-excited about watching him all year. He looks strong, explosive and skilled, the kind of versatile guy we desperately need at that position.

    – The biggest factor in the success of this season was always going to be Cat, and he looked about as good as you could hope for. He’s not a great shooter yet, but he showed marks of improvement, and the floor vision looked a cut above what we saw from him last year. Defensively, the Jackson St guards looked terrified whenever he put the pressure on. He has all the tools to be one of the best defensive guards not just in the ACC, but in the nation.

    – The defense was encouraging, though there were some breakdowns, and the level of competition is obviously low. This is the year where I think we really start to see Gottfried’s ceiling as a coach. I know he can coach offense. He did it at Bama and he’s done it here. I don’t know if he can coach defense, because the defensive talent hasn’t been here the last few years. This year, all the pieces are there to be good-to-great defensively. If we’re below average again, that’s a big problem.

    – We’re going to be in trouble every time Lee has to run the point this year. He just doesn’t make good decisions with the ball.

    – Expected more development from our bigs than I saw tonight. I think Washington looks more confident, but nobody really moved the needle for me. We have depth, youth and talent there though, and I’m not really worried about it. I do think Anya wins the starting job before too long. He’s a game-changer on defense.

    – Going to be another frustrating year watching Ralston Turner. Guy has a great stroke, but just doesn’t make good basketball decisions, and he’s a mess on defense.

^Good post. As for as the interior guys go – Thank GOD our perimeter guys are the crux of everything as opposed to the inverse. Our post guys will come along offensively, and so long as they keep bringing it defensively (blocks) and on the boards then we have a chance to be just fine.

Trevor Lacey was interviewed post-game on the radio – comes across as a really cool dude. He had a great Pack debut.

We have potentially best guard combo we’ve had in a long time (I am trying to remember if there’s been a better one since fire and ice…for a while our 2 guards have been borderline 3s and not great ballhandlers.)

Lots of talent, good shooting, speed, athleticism, size, strenght and depth…no reason for this team not to be good. If we can rebound and defend – and that’s a HUGE if – this year will be special.

This is the most talented NC State team since the 80s. No way they don’t make the dance. If the refs let us we might even beat a blue or two this year.
