UNC-CH administrator & player: “We Cheated”, “it was a scam”, “it was so obvious”, “everybody knew”, “coaches knew”, “whole system of corruption”

I couldn’t pick the best quote for the headline here. You tell me which one you liked the best —

“To keep winning and to keep these athletes eligible, we had to do something, and so, we cheated.” – Mary Willingham

“First one that actually told us [about the paper classes] was our advisors…their job is necessarily to make sure that I am eligible to play.” – Deunta Williams

“It was just a scam. The whole thing. It was a joke. It was SO obvious because you just see AFAM, AFAM, AFAM….” – Mary Willingham

“It’s crunch time and they need an A or they need a B, they would have these paper classes.” – Deunta Williams

“These athletes were getting certified by compliance, constantly.” – Deunta Williams

“Everybody knew” – Mary Willingham

“I believe that the coaches knew that it was going on.” – Mary Willingham

“I think the coaches knew enough to understand what was going on. I think they knew about the system itself; and, if a guy was in trouble the immediate response was why not put him in a paper class.” – Deunta Williams

“We still haven’t admitted that it was a whole system of corruption. We still can’t admit that.” – Mary Willingham

“There was no attendance” – Mary Willingham

“‘Everyone else is doing it’ that was what I was told time and time again.” – Mary Willingham

“I’ve never spoken to an NCAA rep. Never.” – Mary Willingham

How long before former ‘student athletes’ start suing UNC for the education they did not receive? For lost washed because they could not get a real job? There are so many facets to this.

^^I really hope that starts happening. I can only hope lawyers start to jump on this. I really don’t see anything happening with the NCAA though.

Though that pile of refuse will never be the large smoking hole in the ground that it should be, if they get 20% of the penalty that is due, they will be crippled for years…

IF you haven’t seen it yet, this link shows a screen capture of one of the papers that was turned in for one of these AFAM classes.

    http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2014-03-26/unc-academic-scandal-term-paper-rosa-parks-african-american-studies-afam41-niang-oro-north-carolina-mary-willingham

If I were a current or former student of that school, this would make me consider litigation. Consider that the official stance from the school is that since regular students were enrolled in some of these classes, it is not an athletic issue. So if we are to believe that, then there is a very real possibility that the elementary level paragraph in the above link could have been written by a regular student, admitted through the normal process and meeting the normal requirements. The implication for those with degrees is pretty explosive. I wouldn’t want my future employer thinking that you can get a degree from my university with elementary school level reading and writing skills.

Let me ask y’all a serious question? It might even be a rhetorical one.

When was the last time you gave a rat’s ass about what kind of paper your DB,that just took it to the house, on a pick six, just wrote the day before?

Did you turn to your buddy with a high five? Or did you remark about his lack of writing skills?

Let me ask you a question, how often have you listened to a post game interview with that star DB and wondered to yourself, how the heck did that guy get in to college, and how is he staying eligible?

Cowdog, I can assure you if it were not for the decades of the “Carolina Way” BS nobody would care about this. At least, I wouldn’t.

But given that UNC has spent decades creating a glass house filled with rock throwers, I certainly don’t feel sorry for them.

This is a university that has been giving away grades while bragging that their APR was great. Giving away degrees and bragging that their graduation rates were so high.

The problem isn’t that some of their athletes were poorly qualified and were led through programs designed to help them stay eligible. All universities do that.

The problem is that their athletes were poorly qualified, so they committed fraud to ensure they stay eligible while bragging that their excellent outcomes were caused by having a superior education environment and a better class of athlete. When this is proven to be a giant pile of BS, as most expected all along, they want to fall back on the “everybody does it mantra” while simultaneously claiming that the problems were not an athletic problem but one of university oversight. Even now, they can’t admit what we all know was true all along.

Unfortunately for them, most people don’t simply forget the decades of arrogance and would like to see some consequences for the big lie instead of just moving along and letting them clean up their mess.

    Yes, yes, and yes, 3P.

That of which you opine is truly the nature of the question I proposed.

Can I say “ditto”, Dog and Triple P without sound like I’ve listened to too much Limbaugh? I think a lot of folks lose perspective of that…”Everybody does it” does have a lot of truth in it and you would have had to had your head in the dirt to not see “things” when you were in college(no matter where you went). But, what scalds me is that Carolina appears to have set up this scam as the “norm” and has viciously protected that system for years. It goes beyond just a few players, professors, coaches, etc. It’s permeated NC politics(right, left, and center) for years.

I am in awe of an athlete like a Terry Gannon who could handle the academics, the athletics, the travel and practice commitments” and could excel in all. Many of us might do one or two well, but not all. To bring kids into an academic/athletic setting and have extremely high expectations is a tough situation. With proper guidance from the university and commitment from the student/athlete, it maybe be workable in many cases. But when a kid without the “academic tools” is thrown into a system w/o guidance and proper assistance from the university, it’s almost impossible. UnC apparently had no stomach to provide that guidance, they just paid lip service to it and claimed they were the best, when in fact, they may be one of the worst!

Talk about the media ‘coverage’ from local entities. Check this headline out. And people wonder why folks in this state don’t believe all schools are on the same level in terms of coverage.

Notice the headline with the picture that basically forgives the players from ever having to juggle school + basketball. Then, notice the write-up qualifying the HBO and ESPN pieces as ‘nothing new.’ Maybe if WRAL had done some of its job, it could then mount a lawsuit against those other agencies for plagiarism. Thanks, WRAL. No one noticed your reporting until you reported that it was nothing new!!

Exactly, SaccoV. Just more media complicity in the Cheats’ propaganda, deflection, coverup, lying, etc. with absolutely no effort to get to the root cause of all of this, including ALL of those responsible from the beginning and appropriate prosecution and punishment for them. This is just another misdirection from pursuit of all of the facts and people involved. And I truly believe this goes well beyond the Cheater campus through state government and into the laps of many fat cats in and from N.C.

    Spin Cycle: http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/03/27/3737124/unc-athletes-speak-up-about-their.html

After an exhaustive search, UNCheat administrators located two, what they call, “model” students to help rehabilitate the schools image which has been so unfairly damaged. Very interesting that they fronted a football AND basketball player. I’m sure they are fine individuals and I’m certain their GPA is supported by real class work, otherwise why risk digging a deeper hole. But the forced juxtaposition serves to further illuminate the scandal from which the Cheats seek distance. They just can’t bring themselves to admit it. Rather, it’s “never mind that man behind the curtain”. We are THEE great and powerful Flagship. Just look at how awesome we are in our awesomeness.

Hey, idiots….we see you back there.

For those in the media, NCAA, unbiased investigation teams being paid by UNC, and UNC alums, just wanted to provide you with clear evidence that UNC continues not to hide behind these baseless accusations the basketball team ever participated in the AFAM scandal. Here is a picture (taken in 12/13) in the UNC Basketball HOF of the UNC Family display. I’ve highlighted in yellow a lone diploma they are displaying. If there’s only one diploma then it must be important right?

Who is this VIP? Let’s take a closer look at who this important individual is and what they received their degree in.

    Jawad Williams, AFAM, 2005.

There you go. Proof positive that absolutely no cheating was going on with UNC Basketball/AFAM because there is no way UNC would promote this in their HOF since Williams was on the 2005 National Championship team. No one would be that stupid, after all that has come out, to continue to use AFAM degrees as a recruiting tool if there was any chance of cheating. RIGHT??

Now you have all the ammunition you need to tell all these Conspiracy Theorists from rival schools to stick that in their pipe and smoke it.

My bottom line comment is that it’s just more theater from the Chapel with the big Hole in it – and it’s not even good theater because we all knew the plot and the ending before it ever started!

You know, four years ago, I would not have imagined that we would ever get to this point. And if not for the dogged efforts of Dan Kane and a few Wolfpackers, we wouldn’t have. But I now can legitimately see an outcome that topples that worthless university to the ground. With the ramifications for the O’Bannon lawsuit, APR, and the like, the NCAA has no choice but to act or implode. And even if they choose to implode, I still don’t see this ending for *NC. There is too much blood in the water. I think that a class action suit by former players is becoming a distinct possibility. An intrepid reporter can also still blow open the connection between the corrupt university and the corrupt state government, which has heretofore not been touched.

My mind goes back to the time when I was a freshman at State, and was visiting a friend at a Chapel Hill frat party. I watched Julius Peppers and some buddies roll up to the party in a new Dodge Durango, tinted windows, rims, speakers blasting. That’s when I knew that it was true, that those things I had heard people say about “benefits” to Heel players were real. There was no attempt to hide it, it was out in the open, because they knew they were above reproach. That was sixteen years ago, we’ve come a long long way.
