TJ Warren ACC Player of the Year

WRAL:

Media voters selected North Carolina State University sophomore forward T.J. Warren as the ACC’s Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Warren, a Durham native, averaged 24.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Wolfpack, who finished the 2013-14 regular season 9-9 in league play and 19-12 overall. He was named player of the year by 48 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Duke freshman Jabari Parker, who was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, finished second in player of the year voting with 25 votes.

TheACC.com:

NC State’s Warren leads the ACC in scoring at 24.8 points per game and in field goal percentage at .532. The 6-foot-8 forward closed the regular season with back-to-back scoring games of 41 and 42 points in wins over Pitt and Boston College. Warren has scored at least 20 points in 26 of the 30 games in which he played, and has scored more than 30 points on nine occasions.

Warren is on pace to join Clemson’s Horace Grant (1987) and Wake Forest’s Tim Duncan (1997) as only the third player in ACC history to lead the conference in both scoring and field goal percentage. He ranks third nationally in scoring, and his 9.8 field goals made per game ranks first.

Warren also ranks eighth among ACC rebounders with 7.1 per game – including an ACC-high 3.17 offensive rebounds per game – and is eighth in minutes played at 34.9 per game.

This marks the eighth time that an NC State student-athlete has been honored as the ACC Basketball Player of the Year. Warren joins Ronnie Shavlik (1956), Lou Pucillo (1959), three-time winner David Thompson (1973-75), Rodney Monroe (1991) and Julius Hodge (2004).

What can I say…. CUZ did it !

And I’m sure nobody has a bigger, prouder smile on their faces than Pop Warren and Gott && Company….

If they had their way, they might engrave on Cuz’s trophy…

“Son… thanks for just doing what we told you to do!”

Truth is… Cuz’s chances of POY mid January were slim and none. Yeah… he was getting his twenty every night… but most of them were in spurts when the outcome of the game was settled. He was not nearly as productive when the game was on the line. And when things weren’t going the way he thought they ought to go… he had a tendency to disappear.

Two things, he had yet to do consitently, were holding him back….

    1. Play at a consistent level the entire game, cut out those 6-8 minute invisible spots after halftime, and be there for your team at the end of game.
    2. Make / Help everybody on the court play better.

The pass from under the basket, when he could have taken the ball up and maybe scored or maybe gotten a whistle, to Dez Lee for the three pointer with a minute to go against BC was CUZ’s signature/statement highlight for this season. In early January, that pass NEVER happens.

That pass has “Play Team Ball… Trust Your Team Mates” written ALL OVER IT! And that’s the Right Stuff that makes Champions… not scoring points.

So congratulations Cuz… for doing the hard things and the hard work…. over the last six weeks! We all knew you had it in you.

And congratulations Pop… for keeping CUZ in school after last year’s fiasco!!

And congratulations GOTT && Company… even though we know you were just doing your job the way you thought it needed to be done!!!

    ———————-

All this begs an two “interesting” questions…

“Who wouldn’t want to play for GOTT & Company ?”

“Why wouldn’t CUZ want to come back and play for the Red & White next year ?”

    Pop’s gonna tell him….

“Son .. do you know how many kids get a chance to hang their jersey beside David Thompson’s?

If you stay, you’ll get twice as much as Lottery Pick, instead of a low first round – high second round pick and you’ll play five years longer… Son… that’s no less than double the total money for your pro career… Listen to me, Son”

    Go Pop! and Go Pack!

That 23 vote victory margin “sounds” familiar… seems that was posted yesterday afternoon.

    WTG Buckets. Well deserved.

Now, go for two consecutive POY’s please 😉

A big win for TJ, and a big win for the coach. Negative recruiters who say a player cannot develop under Gott just lost their credibility.

It was so much fun watching TJ play this year. I could not be happier for him. Well deserved, and I firmly believe he is going to do it at the next level as well.

Jeff Goodman expresses his displeasure at the vote by publishing the dryest, shortest article he could manage on espn.com. pffffft

It was easier to avoid the drivel when all of the State-baters were concentrated at cbssports.com. I hadn’t realized that Goodman had left for ESPN. Just in case you doubt Goodman’s slant on things:

NC State is 19-12 and 9-9 in league play and likely headed to the NIT unless it wins the ACC tournament.

This sentence would make sense if it was placed in the context of TJ scoring in bunches in spite of being on a mediocre team with no other options. But Goodman, following in the footsteps of his mentor Doyel, continues baiting State fans who will stupidly go to ESPN and leave nasty comments.

VA I was going to mention the snark but didn’t want to give Goodman the satisfaction. It’s an obvious dig, but State fans have bitten yet.

Goodman…Man,everytime one of you mention the name, I get to laughing at this picture in my head of him attempting a dribble, and pull up shot.

    Trust me. It’s hilarious.

Congratulationz TJ! Thank you for the hard work, being a Legacy player and a good role model. You are already one on the best State players ever and you can become one of the most loved by playing one more year. Just hoping!!

I cannot imagine what this year would have been without you

Of course the ESPN headline reads “Warren edges Parker for ACC Player of Year”, because nearly doubling the 2nd place guy’s votes is apparently a narrow margin.

Yeah, in other close contests the Union scraped by the Confederacy in the 1860’s and the Allied powers outlasted the Axis in WWII…

Big congrats to Buckets on this honor. That was as strong a finish over the last few games as I’ve seen from a Wolfpack player in quite some time.

24.8 per game. Outside of the David Thompson era, there’s only a handful of seasons to compare this with. Tom Gugliotta in 1992, Rodney Monroe in both 1990 & 1991, Kenny Carr in 1976, Vann Williford in 1970, and Ronnie Shavlik in 1955.

Pretty good company. I’d love to see what Warren can do as a junior, but I’m not betting we’ll have that opportunity.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that TJ’s scoring went to a whole new level when Tyler took over the starting job and saw his minutes increase. TJ did so much of it on his own in terms of steals, offensive put-backs, and driving into the middle of the lane, but Tyler’s ability to control the ball and get it to TJ in the right place at the right time was crucial.

That’s what I’ve been saying all year. I like watching Cat play fast and the on-ball defense is fun to watch. But I really like a heady PG who can run the offense (which doesn’t just mean he puts up a number on his hand for the team to run a set play). All of the player seem to talk about how Lewis gets them the ball where they like to receive it at the right time. Outside of a “just give me the ball at the top and I’ll drive it down the lane every time” kind of a player, most guys (shooters especially) want to catch the ball in the spot they like so they can immediately shoot or decide whatever else they want to do (I’m thinking how Scott Wood loved to come off of a screen, catch and shoot all in one motion – it made him tough to guard because he could get that shot up so quickly).

I think of it kind of like a hand off in football between the QB and RB. RB doesn’t look down at the ball. He’s trusting that the QB is putting in the right spot so he can keep his eyes up and make his next move quicker. <- I know it’s not a perfect analogy, but it’s what came to me this morning.

That’s okay. The ACC guys have him playing for Maryland. There are so many players in the league, it really is hard to know who plays where. The guys at the ACC spend so much time ensuring we have the highest quality referees and spinning the plethora of Carolina scandals, they really don’t have time for much else.
