Why do we bother caring?

After all of the calls for ‘illegal breathing’against anyone in red & whate that dared played defense near James Michael McAdoo tonight…the video below shows…of course, no foul on McAdoo and out of bounds off State. Without the bad call, there is probably no way that Carolina wins with State up two with 35 seconds to go and TJ Warren shooting two free throws. Of course, without a lot of the strange calls – like three of TJ Warren’s four fouls – there is no way that Carolina wins. But, we all know that. We know it going in. We’ve known it for the entirety of our lives. At what point do we all have to look ourselves in the mirror and tell ourselves that we are INSANE for expecting anything else? Watching re-runs of WWE’s Raw on Hulu Plus provides you a better chance of witnessing fairness and an unexpected result.

Goodnight.

    Hello Dr. Wuf….

I appreciate the time you took to respond in a thoughtful and considered manner.
And I’m pretty sure all of your answers are correct… politically and otherwise.

Ok… I give up… exactly which answer is ‘my desired answer’ ??
I didn’t have any preconceived notions of how you might respond other than exactly the way you did.

    ———–

    It’s not a loaded question… it’s a “trick” question….

.. kinda like “running a cutter thru the lane to see if the other team is playing zone or man-to-man…”

    The ‘trick’ is this…

There’s an imaginary “line” out there somewhere and it’s one of those “lines” where discretion should cause one to pause when approaching. It’s also one of those “lines” where extreme caution should also be used when one chooses to cross.

Is it not true that nobody is hiring anybody who “appears” to look for ‘excuses’, uses ‘excuses’, or worst of all — manufacturers ‘excuses’ — to avoid accepting responsibility for their own actions and the actions of those working under them?

And is the same not also true when the “applicant” is so firmly entrenched in their stated opinions as to become blind to larger perspectives, and in that process becomes insensitive or rude to other people?

    ———–

    Now… along these lines…
with respect to officiating in basketball games…

It’s probably okay to say… with or without profanity….
    “The refs suck…” or…
“The ref made a very bad call at the end of the game…” or…
“If the ref had called that last play differently… we would have won the game”

It’s probably NOT okay to say… “The refs cost us the game…”

    Likewise…
    It’s probably okay to say…
“We do not appear to be getting our fair share of questionable or judgement calls…”

It’s probably NEVER okay to say… “The whole world is out to get us and is doing everything it can to make sure we don’t ever win again…”

Needless to say… when some people hear this last statement… that’s when the fireworks become most spectacular… or the conversation ends quickly and politely — the result being the same either way.

    ———–

You know as well as I…. that when you ask someone what they thought about something or if they liked or disliked something… their responses tell us very little, if anything, we didn’t already know, about the “something”…

…those kinds of answers always tell us much more… about the person answering the question.

Therein, my friend, lies the danger of choosing to cross the line.

Some things, perhaps, are best left unsaid.

    I understand.

Last week, I contacted a mentor who gave me good advice on how to handle a work situation. I was told to be sensitive with my work and to “be a lady” which is the equivalent of your be classy statement.

While there is a time and place for everything, stating and documenting the obvious is important. It’s also important to have validation and buy-in. IT DID HAPPEN. I understand your point about whiners but you never sit there and continue to get kicked in the mouth. Man up. Back it up with stats and facts.

I don’t believe in parroting ACC paid commentators and dumb media people.

It is what it is. It’s important to recognize it and address it and one day, move on. Moving on is key here.

It does burn me when our fans criticize the team when they did put themselves in position to win only to have it snatched. They did enough to win the game. The nonsense about a botched play, Vandy not being in position, somebody not making a shot….give me a freaking break. If the sky is blue….it’s blue. Call it. On these boards and conversations with UNC-CHeat fans these interactions are easy to handle….especially on Fridays and now that there has been some exposure to their corruption.

If I was giving a PR interview, I would be more muted with my response but I wouldn’t dally around the issue either.

The refs absolutely suck and have cost us multiple games this year.

    You’re a good guy.

    Thanks….

I wasn’t really referring to your comments in particular.

It may interest you to know… that way back in dinosaur time, when I attended NC State…. we had a pretty good basketball team. Off the top of my head, I don’t remember losing to Duke during those four years and I’m thinking we beat *NC something like ten times in a row.

When it came to the officials…. there was this little guy named Lenny. Old Lenny loved *NC and tried his best to help Coach Smith out, especially when he was playing over in Carmichael. Old Lenny got some of the other refs to see his way too, I think.

Kids and alums alike used to get redfacedcussing mad during the games… that plus the heat
(coaches back then also played this little game with each other furnaces and tried to see who could get the temperature in their old gym up above 90)…
    plus the blue smoke…
(a lot of people smoked a lot of cigarettes during the games… including some coaches on the bench and there was no air conditioning )…
made basketball games in those little gyms… shall we say.. ’emotional’…

and right in the middle of all that was Old Lenny…

He would always find a way to just have to make a charging/blocking call with less than two minutes left in the game… the few times he could not manufacture a charge/block… he’d just mysteriously NOT call traveling on somebody…

I mean the guy was a genius at what he did… except for two things… he never got those two calls right…. the little guy literally could not count to three and run the court at the same time… and he was slow and always behind the play and out of position on every charge/block call.

The Coaches all would fuss and then say the magic word and Lenny would T ’em up… The former Dook player who was coaching at Maryland back then even had this stomp thing he did with his foot… just to get Lenny’s attention when the crowd got loud. Somebody up in Cole Field House finally put a seatbelt on his chair to slow him and Lenny and the T’s down.

All of which made for great theatre, and contributed to the abuse heaped upon old Lenny’s head by the fans. Truth is Old Lenny loved it.

Not much different than what we saw at this years *NC or Syracuse games. The funny thing is… the *NC, Dook, Wake and UM people all said the same things we did about old Lenny and his eyesight.

The was another ref named Hank Nichols… and he was the good guy… Coach Sloan always liked it when he worked our games and made sure that Hank was working at least five or six of our most important home games each year (UNC,Dook,Wake and esp. those Twerps) … Coach even got old Hank his own personal parking place on the east side of Reynolds.

It was a known fact according to some… that some coaches paid some officials extra to work their games…
Coach Smith was paying old Lenny and Coach Sloan was paying Hank.

Of course, I never saw any money change hands… I’m just telling you what people used to say.

Thinking about it it was really no different then way back then than now…. except we won more games than anymore else… which solved a lot of our “problems”.

Back then… in spite of what some fans said… Neither Old Lenny or Hank ever cost anybody a game… The games were all razor close and both teams made plenty of other mistakes over the course of forty minutes and that’s what determined the outcome, not Lenny’s bad calls or Hank’s good calls.

The difference is Nobody back then, believed in exotic, tinfoilhat, conspiracy theories, except a few people with small concrete buildings in their backyards, who were largely shunned and ignored or known to be on some watchlist in Washington … I have no idea when or how all that got started.

I like the way you think….

Man UP (or LadyUP as the case requires)
    Don’t ever make excuses
    See the problem
    Define the problem
    Fix the problem

especially the “Be A Lady and ManUP” at the same time part…
I have three daughters… you might need to help me explain that to ’em …

    Have a good one..

..and you GOTT the job !

Lenny Wirtz. Ahhhhhh yes. The first referee I ever took notice. He was the predecessor to Karl Hess. If he was reffing, we automatically gave the UNC a 12 point advantage. Maybe we should employ that method to refs these days.

Like I said earlier….if only we had social media back in the 80’s. He called some crazy stuff. Swoffy and he were buddies.
