NC State Baseball hadn’t been scheduled to meet up with UNC in the 2014 season, as the teams rotate off of one another’s cross division schedules.
But following last spring’s epic 18 inning duel in the ACC Tournament, closely followed by the teams splitting two contests in the CWS in Omaha, college baseball seemed to get a bit of a boost into the triangle area’s field of vision.
Elliott Avent and UNC head coach Mike Fox put their heads together and decided it was kinda silly not to capitalize on their new found popularity, and the April 15th single game contest is the result.
The Pack won a coin toss and will thus be the home team for the game, which will count as a non-conference matchup for both squads.

The midweek, non-conference game will be the latest installment in a storied rivalry that has ascended to national prominence. After both teams were featured on a preseason Baseball America cover shot at the DBAP last spring, the matchup reached fever pitch on May 25, 2013 when the two squads met in a round-robin game of the ACC Baseball Championship at the DBAP. The battle turned out to be the longest game in ACC Tournament history, a marathon 2-1, 18-inning victory for the Tar Heels. That epic clash took place in front of 11,392 fans, the largest crowd ever to watch a college baseball game in the state of North Carolina.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to play in the Duel at the DBAP,” said Wolfpack Head Coach Elliott Avent. “Our players are thrilled, our fans have already marked it on their calendars, and we’re looking forward to adding another chapter to this storied rivalry.”
