Pack beats FSU 74-70

That was a gutsy, hard fought win in Raleigh tonite. This team hasn’t stopped fighting since the Duke loss and has won three straight to improve to 4-4 in the ACC. Warren scored at will tonight and ended with 30 points even though he was on the bench (with Turner) most of the stretch run. Lee, Lewis and Vandenberg all stepped up in his absence.

Just think, State is a blown travel call away from being 5-3 and in a solid position approaching the turn. With an 18-game league schedule, State can make up the Wake loss with a win Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Jamie Luckie falls to 3-1 officiating State in league games this season.

I get prouder and prouder of this team after each of these 3 wins…U*NC will be tough on Saturday…but I’m confident we can do it…

    ^ Agreed.

Even on the ‘ugly’ nights, they never stop scrapping.

Extremely proud of this team and pleased with the way they are playing.

Unfortunately, it’s on to Chapel Hill, where we haven’t been able to keep it respectable, let alone win, in years and years. It’s unfortunate also that they seem to be playing better lately. Not a good feeling at all about this next one.

Great game tonight, thoguht we played very well as a TEAM and everyone contributed with the little things that often dont show up a stat sheet or box score.

Thought Gott had a great game plan tonight and earned his pay. Looked like he had a plan and they executed.

As for the crowd, from the earlier thread, I thought the crowd was large and LOUD. I think it certainly helped and made a big difference.

As for the roads from the other thread, the roads were fine. I drove back from SC today and roads were fine all the way back. Roads were dry and a non-factor.

Having just watched the replay on ESPN3, I couldn’t be prouder of the team. Everyone did their job, they kept themselves in the game, and the Vandwagon and Dez Lee made the play at the end.

    Go pack!

Very impressive win! Did it without Anya (who I hope is ok and we need to be ok), without Vandenberg for a majority of the game, and without Warren down the stretch.

‘Scrappy’ is the best way to put it … they found a way. I really liked giving Lee the ball as the shot clock wound down. He’s our best ‘bull in a china shop’ driver and he keeps an eye for interior passes.

Still a long way to go for any hope for a bid, but we got a small, unexpected boost tonight on top of the big win – Chris Collins’ Northwestern Wildcats went to Wisconsin and won. That should mean a fairly sizable jump for them in numbers, and that definitely helps us.

Great job team! Please be ok, Anya.

Season ticket holder here… I’ve missed the last 3 home games due to work commitments. A pattern is emerging. I’m starting to wonder if I should take this personally.

It’s good to see Lewis getting his confidence back and getting more playing time. Maybe it’s just me but our offense appears to run much better with Lewis in at the point. I just continue to hope that Lewis and Barber can make it work while sharing playing time. The freshman bigs appear to be improving. Washington and Freeman appear to be playing with a lot of confidence. Warren really needs to not let other players get into his head. Did anyone notice him catching and elbow at one point in the game from the FSU center? What I dont understand is that if it was one of our guys that connected with an elbow, they would have went to the monitors and given our guy a flagrant 1 foul. There just seems to never be any consistency with refereeing in this league. And I know we have to play through that and we cant use that as an excuse but it’s frustrating at times.

I quit watching games after the Duke blowout. Coincidence? We’ll see. I figure if I don’t watch any more games this season, we should finish in the Top 25. #budlight

Great win. We were the tougher team even with foul trouble. Really like a lot about this team. Warren was a beast.

Big big game Saturday. Gotta have it.

He was called for a foul when his chin hit the FSU player’s elbow. I guess he was just luckie

His chin hit the FSU player’s elbow when he reached in with both hands to try to wrestle the ball away from him and got a whole lot of Seminole arm in the process. The only questionable foul on Warren last night was the offensive foul. He never extended his arm/elbow and from the angles I saw he didn’t lower his shoulder either. TJ doesn’t play smart with foul trouble. He could do better in that area.

Thing is TJ rarely ever gets IN foul trouble…except when Jamie Luckie is around…

What’s curious about TJ to me is most of his points seem to come from offensive rebounds or broken plays, not much is ever run for him. THIS night was a rare time where TJ chose to just take over the game and dominate on the offensive end. THAT mentallity would serve us well this weekend and especially ACC Tourny time

Last night did a lot to improve our resume. I’ll tread carefully, as i have already said i didn’t think we’d make the tourney. I am changing my mind about our chances.

We are now 57th in the RPI. Our remaining schedule is easier than the first part, with only SU and Pitt as the hard teams remaining. We are likely to split the series with UNC, lose to the top 2, and can win the others (UM x2, VT, CU, WF, and BC). If we win 4 or 5 of those others, we are in.

I also noticed that TJ was playing more aggressively. I wonder what the coaches said.

On the remark about Cat vs. TL, I think the difference is experience. At this point in his career, TL sees the floor better. No ding on Cat. We need them both and things are working pretty well and getting better.

My only question Mark on Cat is that he (like TJ) seems to go down hard, at least once a game. Tonight the FSU player fell right on his leg, that looked like it hurt. My question is whether his body can take that kind of punishment in the long run.

    Go pack!

To me, besides enjoying watching Lewis get more playing time, as I like watching our offense run with him at the point, I really think Freeman near the end of the first half was huge for us. He NEVER gave up on any play, even the obvious ones where they came down with the rebound and simply look to pass it to their point guard. It helped that the refs seemed to be letting them play a little in the first half (obviously that changed, like normal, in the second). But in any event, I really enjoyed his hustle when we really needed it from a big.

This team can make jump shots? Holy Cow, did they ever. And everyone hustling… looking like a basketball team.

Fun game to watch – this team is winning me over.

Warren needs to plug his ears Saturday – UNX will be trash-talking and roughing him up after tonight’s ‘loss of cool’ at the end. They’ve got numerous bodies to throw at him, and our guys need him on the court, or at least available. He’s almost as crucial as a decoy as he is a scorer.

Hope Lewis is encouraged with his play and playing time. The combination of Barber and Lewis at point, or even sharing time on the floor, is very effective, and will continue to be so… They just need to figure out who’s the 1 and who’s the 2 when they’re out there together – saw them cutting to the same spot a couple of times during half court sets !

Once again, Jamie Luckie had a very good game.

He missed a possible carry when working back court, but he gets his charge /block calls pretty well on the money.

State should hope for as many games as possible with Luckie or Kersey.

BTW Tex, nice get on the Warren reach-in. Ya just can’t do it.

FYI, they did got to the monitor where Warren reached in and got elbowed. While I think the fouls were not called consistently (a virtual rape is not called and then they would call a foul for looking at someone) I do not believe the elbow was intentional nor flagrant.

Buckets definitely raked him across the arm/shoulder. Both of his last two fouls looked dicey live, but were pretty clear in slow motion replay.

To win I felt like we had to out rebound FSU and have fewer than 12 turnovers. I put the chances of both of those things happening at less than 5%.

If you’d have told me we’d have shot a similar percentage, yet outrebounded FSU despite huge foul trouble for Vandy and only 1 minute for Anya, I would not have believed it. The team as a whole really focused on rebounding and I was proud of them.

The team really looks like a cohesive unit. I loved how guys like Lee, Vandy, Washington and Lewis stepped it up in crunch time when Warren and Turner were saddled with foul trouble.

On the officiating, I thought it was horrible. NC State’s 3 most important players in a game against FSU all played fewer minutes than they average due to fouls. Yeah, we committed some fouls, but FSU hacked on almost every play. Their fouls were also really spread out and not on the “important” players. This is been one of my criticisms of ACC officiating for years. It’s not just the number of fouls, it is who they are against and when that happens in the game.

I’m not saying had we lost it was due to officiating. I’m just saying that consistently inconsistent (or sadly consistently bad) officiating has really zapped my enjoyment of the game. Look for that trend to continue against UNC. Vandy will have 2 fouls the first two times down the court and Ralston and Warren will both have 2 by half time.

Well, Vandenberg needs to visit the Howell School of Avoiding Excess Fouls, is there time?

Wish Anya a speedy recovery, was hoping to see his matchup with Meeks on Saturday.

And this assumption that we will at worst split with UNC is a bit loaded, but they are near our RPI so it shouldn’t be impossible..

Oh, loved the 3-guard lineup, hope it becomes appropriate again in the future.

^We all know what to expect Saturday 🙁

Anya – if he plays – fouls out in the first half after coming in for Vandy’s three quick first half fouls. Vandy gets his third as the refs notice that Anya is about to check in for him – so a quick, efficient whistle gets the job done.

Vandy comes back in and picks up his 4th before the half. Washington, who has taken over Richard Howell’s sacred tendencies, starts the game with two fouls before tip-off. Freeman comes in immediately following the tip-off. Freeman does his best not to breathe on McAdoo, Meeks, or Johnson – but still picks up three first half fouls.

Barber picks up three first half fouls for having the audacity to attempt to guard Paige. Lewis picks up two fouls ‘just because’. Dez Lee has four first half fouls where Kenny Britt and McDonald bowl him over with lowered shoulders – but we all know that’s a blocking foul if you don’t wear light blue. Turner knows better, and just lets his man drive or shoot at will.

The Holes shoot thirty-five first half free throws and lo-and-behold hit thirty of them. #NCStateSh*t. The second half goes much better as for fouls, because Gottfried and Lutz wisely tell all defenders to line up on the opponent’s baseline and ‘not move at all’ on defense. Still, there are ten more second half fouls called on the Pack – all of them shooting fouls. Vandenberg doesn’t foul out, but Freeman quickly does. We have to go small and let the Holes score at will in the post. Roy loves it. It’s ‘great basketball’. The crowd loves it. The refs love it.

The Holes wind up with 60 free throw attempts, hitting 45. McAdoo has 25 attempts. Quality viewing experience. Still, State battles hard and only loses by twenty-five, 90-65. Holes after the game talk about ‘buckling down’ and ‘making a move’ in the conference standings. ‘This is the type of basketball we’re able to play’. You don’t say. 🙁
