Shadrach Thornton Under Investigation For Sexual Assault; Is Charged With Marijuana Possession

Some people never learn, and apparently Shadrach Thornton is one of them. After running afoul of the law last spring and being suspended from the NC State football team for a time because of it, Thornton is once again the subject of an assault investigation and has been charged with possession of marijuana according to WRAL.

Detectives said they went to Thornton’s apartment Wednesday to follow up on a sexual battery case that was reported Monday to the NCSU Police Department. Detectives knocked on Thornton’s door at College Inn apartments, at 2717 Western Blvd., in Raleigh, and smelled marijuana, according to the warrant.

Marchez Coates, also an NC State football player, answered the door and gave the two detectives permission to enter the apartment where they found “several marijuana stems and a partial marijuana cigarette lying on the kitchen table,” the warrant stated.

Thornton has not been charged in the sexual battery investigation but does face misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

While it is far too soon to presume guilt or innocence regarding the sexual assault investigation, it is somewhat telling that Thornton would have illegal drugs in his room. While many feel that marijuana should be legalized and that it is not harmful, it is nonetheless illegal and Thornton must surely have known he was just off being on thin ice as far as head coach Dave Doeren and NC State football is concerned.  It would not be at all surprising if this latest incident costs him his scholarship and place on the team, given that this is the second time he has been criminally charged in the same year.

Dammit, seemed he had put it together after the trouble earlier in the year. I’d be surprised if he’s still on the roster next season; a shame – we really need(ed) him.

Regardless, I hope he can get his life together and get going on the right track.

Coach DD must feel like it’s raining and pouring.

Thornton was the one really bright spot on the 2013 team coming back in ’14. I doubt Doeren will spend a lot of money trying to cover this up.

And what about Coates? This has got feel of something a little bigger than just those 2.

I think Dayes is every bit as good, and we have other tailbacks coming in.

And Jeebus, Old Testament. Weed is supposed to make one much less assaulty. You must be doing it wrong.

Unfortunately for the young man, I believe his time as a football player for NC State is over. I’m not commenting on his guilt or innocence, but he will be killed by the local media, who have been chomping at the bit for anything negative to report about NC State since the whole mess on the Hill started. Coach D will have no choice but to cut ties. I hate it for him, because he had a promising future, but you have to distance yourself from those things when you know the opportunity that you have.

    Really disappointing news.

That’s why I recommend cookies/brownies. There is a way to cover your trail…

Plus, you knock the munchies out before they begin.
    Win-win.

D>I>S>A>P>P>O>I>N>T>I>N>G does not come anywhere near a proper description. Shad was on the Post Game show or maybe the Coach DD show talking about how grateful he was for his second chance and how he had worked hard to regain his “status”….he was also apologetic for being “DUMB” and making a mistake.

What is the old phrase, you can cure Dumb, but you can’t fix Stupid. As that great and learned philosopher, Mr. Gump said, Stupid is as Stupid does…

The is PROBABLY IT….unless the Sexual Battery case is the same “type” as Jameis Winston…..case of “jilted female”….

BUT, I totally agree with the comments…..he has probably worn the Red and White Uni for the last time.

I guess we will have to adopt the UNC montra…..PJ (substitute Shad) WHO? Never heard of him…..

Very disappointed. 2nd chance, yes, we all deserve a 2nd chance. 3rd chance, not likely.

I remember when Coach Sheridan suspended a LB for a fight for an entire season and a WR for an entire season for misconduct. I am not naming names because it is old news, but both were starters and the LB was all conf potential and the WR all-american. Sheridan did not hesitate – immediate response/suspension now and ask questions later. Whether or not they were guilty did not matter – coahc said as players they have a responsibility to stay clean and represent the program and community. They both manned up and made the most of their 2nd chance.

Unfortunately, OT blew his and needs to be let go immediately. Good timing, end of semester is coming up.

FYI, sexual battery can be a myriad of things. Sexual battery can be as simple as pinching a lady on the behind. It could be a lot worse.

Hope he gets himself together after he leaves the football team. A real waste of talent.

I would be more “wait and see” if this wasn’t the second such mention in a rather brief time interval. Looks like a pattern to me, and not one to be taken lightly.

In a statement, NC State said Thornton has been suspended indefinitely.

“The NC State Athletics Department takes any allegation of illegal activity very seriously. We have university and athletic policies and procedures in place regarding our expectations of conduct for our
    students,” is said.

    WTVD Article…..

    http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/sports&id=9350216

I had scanned the N&O article, but now it says “Coach D done suspended him….indefinitely”.. Maybe I missed it or maybe they just “updated” it….

    SO the following is TRUE…..

NCSU/Coach D done borrowed a Ray Charles lyric….”Hit the road, Shad…..” Now wonder if that will follow with “and don’t you come back no more…..no more…..?

Someone in the SEC West will take him now. Watch.

Shad, my drug induced worst to first vision quest starts in late August, not now. Everyone needs to have a reflective montage of all the low points experienced this year over the next 9 months before puff, puff, give begins. Like the enthusiasm though.

Least we have the issues of a top 25 team.

… after the season we just finished… I’m not sure “everybody” ought to roll a fat one….

    Just kidding… of course.

    Hello Burlington !

What s*** for brains would allow the cops to enter with a half joint on the table and some stems. You can eat that, you don’t even have to make a mad dash for the toilet.

  20. Pack Mentality 12/05/2013 at 7:38 PM #

I take that back. They were going to search the room no matter what, and claim that they were given permission. We don’t know if they really were given permission.

Sexual assault is a big time offense. There is only so much that one person can be accused of against women before you look at the odds of all this happening to one guy more than once.

  21. I-Like-Tacos 12/05/2013 at 7:39 PM #

Don’t kick him off the team for the weed. Kick him off the team for being an idiot.

    ^^ and ^

That’s exactly what I would have expressed in my own words.

  23. JohnGalt78 12/05/2013 at 8:12 PM #

Gather facts coach, make an informed but quick decision. And don’t hesitate to boot him if you deem justified. I think it might be.

  24. redcanine 12/05/2013 at 8:12 PM #

So a cop is asking around about Shad, and nobody warns him? That aint good looking out for nobody.

Give our guys a little heads-up next time. Geesh.

Well. That nice smile from an excellent basketball game lasers not even 24 hours. It sucks pulling for the pack.
