Big Resume building victory at Tennessee for the Wolfpack

The Wolfpack just seems to be getting better and better. The chemistry this team shows is excellent. Tonight, they went to Knoxville as an eight point underdog and had an extremely impressive victory over a Tennessee team that is expected to be in the NCAA Tournament in March. NC State lead wire-to-wire in a 65-58 victory that had TJ Warren lead the Pack with 21 points.

The Pack jumped out to first half leads of 6-0, 19-11, 30-15, and lead 37-20 at the half. It was the best first half I have seen the Pack play on the road since February 16, 2012 at Cameron Indoor. We won’t discuss the last 11 minutes of that debacle though. Nor will we discuss Dan Dakich’s obsession with last year’s team. Hey Dan, that was last year. Let’s try to stay on point and talk about this year’s team.

The previous road game had the Pack unable to come through in the final minutes against Cincinnati. Tonight though was different. Mark Gottfried’s team would not be denied. Each player that played for State played well.

TJ Warren – 21 points and 11 rebounds in spite of dealing with good defense by the Vols’ Josh Richardson.
Cat Barber – 12 points and 4 assists. 4 of his buckets were big time as Warren was on the bench and the Vols were threatening to make the game close.
Jordan Vandenberg – 4 blocks in 12 minutes. Early foul trouble didn’t stop him from making his presence felt against the bigs for the Vols.
Lennard Freeman – 9 rebounds in 20 minutes. Continues to be a Dennis Rodman type rebounder for the Pack.
Desmond Lee – 10 points. Slashed and drove the ball to the rim early and often.
Beejay Anya – 5 blocks and one mean half hook for a bucket. Between Vandenberg and Anya, the Pack dominated the much more celebrated frontcourt of Stokes and Maymon.
Kyle Washington – 5 points, 7 rebounds, and abundant energy. Freeman and Washington would not let anyone else get a rebound. Washington brought a great motor tonight.
Ralston Turner – 5 points. Made a couple of big shots.
Tyler Lewis – Ran the team well when called upon.

The defense was outstanding tonight. Tennessee only shot 29% from the field, and was a horrendous 3-24 from behind the arc. Part of that was the Wolfpack defense for sure. 12 blocks (9 by either Vandenberg and Anya) was inspiring. Having seen Tennessee play several times this year, and a lot last year, the key in my opinion was to jump out to an early lead on Tennessee. When that happens, they stop going down to the post and start jacking up threes. Outside of Jordan McRae (who should have been the SEC Player of the Year last year), there is not yet another trusted outside shooter. The statistic ESPNU put up early in the 2nd half was prescient. When the Vols shoot more than 15 3-pointers in game, they are 0-3 (now 0-4). When shooting 15 or less 3-pointers, the Vols are 6-0. Tonight it was 3-24. Therefore, a Wolfpack win.

Tonight was a great win for the Wolfpack for several reasons:

1. Goal every game is to be 1-0 when the clock strikes 00:00.
2. Now have a 6 game winning streak.
3. Confidence soars with road win against a probable NCAA Tournament team
4. Resume building win for hopeful NCAA berth

This tweet by @NCStateFootball sums up the evening.

I’ll repost my observations here, since I didn’t get in until the end of the game thread:

    Some points from me:

    1. I watched the whole game on mute. It was quite pleasant. Some of you have said that Dickitch correctly called out our team last year, and maybe he did. But why? He is a color commentator. It’s not his job to bust the balls of the kids on the team. He’s supposed add comments about the action on the floor, not make personal attacks. Right now he is calling Pack fans, including Julius Hodge, out on twitter. He’s supposed to be a professional journalist, not a twitter antagonist. Google his name and read about some of the fights he has had with people on twitter, even going as far as telling a journalism student that he would black ball him in the industry. The guy is a joke.

    2. Really proud of the performance by the team tonight. The young guys showed great heart. With a young team, at some point you just have to let them go and sink or swim. They swam tonight. We will have some head scratching loses this year, but that is what I expected. I really enjoy watching this team grow.

    3. The heels have attempted more FTs in their last two games than we have all year. For the last three decades, we’ve been fed the idea that the blue teams get to the line more because they aggressively attack the basket. Our team this year scores fewer of their points from outside the arc than all but one team in the whole country. Yet we aren’t getting the calls. Yes, it’s nothing new, just very frustrating.

Great Day! My son graduated from NCSU Poole College of Management with Honor’s, State Wins, Heels lose! P.S., if Tyler wants more PT, he has got to hit the three shots. Great Day at State all around.

This was a huge game for the freshmen bigs. With Vandy in foul trouble, they got thrown in the fire, and came through with flying colors. This was easily the best game Kyle Washington has played. He was aggressive, confident, and I loved how enthusiastic and encouraging he was between plays. Just brought a ton of energy. Anya is still way too heavy (Tennessee didn’t involve him in P&R nearly as much as they should have), but you can see the talent there that’s gonna make him a monster in the future. His timing on contesting shots is tremendous. Freeman continues to be solid, and good on him for working on that FT stroke.

What more can you say about T.J. Warren? He’s a stud, and he makes it seem effortless. We’re going to win a couple games this year that we have no business being in, simply because he’s the best player on the floor.

There are still issues. The defensive rebounding was better, but we still gave up offensive rebounds on 40% of their shots, which is way too high. The wings also need to stay more disciplined. Buckets has gotten a little better at picking his spots, but there’s still too much lunging out of position for steals. Dez had one such play in the second half which was one of the worst gambles I’ve ever seen. He was nowhere near getting the ball, and was so out of position that his man basically waltzed in for a layup. That has to tighten up.

All in all though, very encouraging.

… while I really like Tyler and still think he can be one of our best…

Basketball these days seems like it’s about 100% mental and 20% ability …. Tyler needs to and will work through all this…. just part of ‘growing up’….

    OR….

I hear BARRY HINSON is looking for a Few Good Men ( and a point guard).

We need to hire that guy… don’t have a clue what his job would be… but he’s definitely the kind of coach some players ( not to mention … some coaches ) need to hang around with.

    Amerson
    Harrow
    Purvis
    CALVIN
    Brown

just to mention a few of the recent ones…

Maybe he could work with all our sports teams, men and women, revenue and non-revenue.

I, for one, would certainly hate to see Tyler’s name added to that list.

    85Designo – Congratulations proud Dad!

Hope TL puts the team over his ego. There’s only one thing standing between he and more playing time – shooting. And that’s on him. Put the time in the gym, hit a hundred threes a day over Christmas, and voila! You’re splitting PG time with Cat again. If you need help, ask for it. Coach Moxley is supposed to be good at coaching outside shooting. Don’t be a victim, own your issues and fix them.

Beejay is still a year away from being the dominant inside presence we need him to be, but he has amazing timing. And long arms. I think we’re gonna love this kid.

You’ve “Gott” to give it to him. Gott brought in an amazing freshman class.

DRW- You are right, these “dumb ass ” kids do need to understand that twitter is public. But we dumb ass adults need to also understand that these kids are kids. Not everything these kids say on twitter has some hidden meaning, or needs to be dissected to try and determine the mental state of the player. I see TL as a team player, and a very valuable member of our team, as I’m sure the coaching staff does.

A road win is certainly nice. But both teams have a long way to go before the NCAAT Selection Committe will be looking at either team’s resume.

    Exactly.

But when does a kid start having some adult expectations? Sheesh, we’ve been happy to pack kids up with an M-16 and send them over to Iraq or Afghanistan the past decade.

If TL is not happy with his role on the team, he can do something about it: improve his outside shooting and defense. Coach G is smart enough to put the better PG on the floor for the bulk of the minutes and any objective observer will tell you that right now that player for NC State is Cat Barber.

I agree that Lewis needs to work on shooting. But that is contrary to what he has been in his career to this point, which is a distributor first, distributor second, and scorer third. I will disagree that Barber is clearly better, because they are two different types of players. We certainly have more scoring threats when Barber is in the game, and we run better without a doubt, but the actual halfcourt offense that we run looks smoother when Lewis is there. To my eye anyway, and I believe the assist/TO stats would back that up. Barber has not quite yet mastered the intricacies of the offense, sometimes blowing down the lane before the pick gets set. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I do think that for this season to have any measure of success, BOTH of these young guys will need to log important minutes. This is the first time in my lifetime that I can remember that I don’t cringe whenever the backup PG comes in, no matter which of them is the backup. And we all need to remember, that some of the playing time discussion comes down to the teams that we are playing, and which of our personnel match up with their guys. I have liked the flexibility that I have seen this year from Gott in that regard.

^ You’re leaving out one important factor: Lewis is a defensive liability. Barber is not.

I like Lewis, always have. But I wonder if he went to the coaches and spoke those words out loud before posting it to the universe – a universe which has zero influence on his playing time.

First time I have really see the team play this year. What a difference a year makes. Very impressed with new pups.

What a fun season if these guys keep improving. I liked their work ethic during the game.

Look forward to seeing how we do against Mizzou. will be at that game.

As mentioned Tyler is best at distributing. Maybe our young players are not doing a bang up job at putting themselves in a receiving position. We do seem to have a group with the ability to create on their own to some degree. When TL has the ball they almost seem to concentrate more on defending his passes more than his shooting. He’s gotta make them pay.

Also, anybody read the write up on wral? Writer sounded like a Pack hater or really disgusted Pack fan. Emphasis was on how poor UT did and how we almost blew it. Put 1 sentence by itself as if it were the only good thing they couldout. We had 12 blocks. Just sounded bitter.

I recall hearing that Tyler was going to take a leadership role with this team. These could be obvious bs N&O preseason articles that knew nothing about the situation, but Tyler himself was stating this as well. Leadership starts in practice but it damn sure comes through in games. I haven’t seen Tyler Lewis look like he is taking command of the team at any point. He always seems to have a timid look when playing and when talking with teammates. Washington on the other hand was really showing some signs of stepping up and getting other players involved.

I have always liked Tyler Lewis and believe that he is an excellent talent at pg. He would start on most teams in the country except for those that have the most elite level of talent on the team. Cat Barber is that kind of elite talent so of course you have to start the better player. Cat needs to learn to finish the play better though, and of course he is a freshman before ACC play has even started – he will learn. Until he gets better at finishing he should concentrate on penetrating and passing to the open man and not shooting.

Hopefully this twitter BS is just that, some stupid BS that he did without thinking while trying to sound like a somewhat educated white rapper or something. This team is improving and it doesn’t appear that it one bad attitude will derail the others. If he felt that way the rest of the team sure as hell didn’t while they went on to kick Tennessee’s a**.

We do need Tyler though. He is going to be solid as hell his junior and senior years, and he is now too. He just needs to use the fact that Cat is on the team to improve in an intensely competitive situation.

“I put my heart and soul in this game”

I hope all of our players feel this way.

I know must of us who follow this site realize that our team is playing with mostly top 100 recruits and several McDonald’s All-Americans. Most of these kids are planning on playing at the next level. If Tyler feels that way, I hope he understands all of the other players on the team feel the same way. If he wants more PT, he needs to fight. That’s just tough love. It’s true for everybody in everyday life.

As far as Gott is concerned, he makes over a million dollars a year. His job is to win if he wants to keep that nice salary. That’s what keeps his boss and us(the fans) happy.

Since we got Vandy back and Cat has emerged as the starter we have gone 6-0 with an eye opening win last night.

The goal is to make the NCAA this year and it’s looking realistic. Keep Winning!!

These are the exact lyrics from J Cole’s Sideline Story as referenced in the tweet so picking out phrases and dissecting them is pointless. I’m sure he knows how important he is as a player and a leader to this team and he knows he isn’t unappreciated by anyone. He most likely was bummed that he didn’t perform the way he wanted and found a song that summarized his pain in a way. Classic non-story blown out of proportion. On the opposite side of the story post game video might have been posted already but still worth a second look http://packinsider.com/?p=601

^Thanks for the clarification about the lyrics. I had thought it may be song lyrics, but I’m not really up on most popular music. Another reason why we adults need to be careful trying to interpret tweets.

I read the WRAL account of the story and was hardly surprised. Capitol Broadcasting make a ton of money speaking out of both sides of their mouths where NC State is concerned. On one had they are the marketing arm of NC State sports but on the other hand they attack the school every single chance they get.

On top of that, they are the de facto mouthpiece for UNC athletics, to the point where they are an embarrassment to journalism. And finally, there is David Glenn, a man whose narcissism makes him unlistenable.

I have been angered by WRAL for years. Then the UNC scandal came out, and I was incensed at their lack of coverage. Then the Leak “story” came out, and that was the last straw. I have been boycotting them since. They no longer get my viewership, or my clicks online.

Agree Alpha. It’s flagrant. When I went to the wral website, they had front page update of the unc game vs Texas in progress…as if #1 and #2 in the country were playing and everbody needed to know. That game was no more significant to this area than the ours vs UT. We won on the road and UNC sh1t the bed…at home…again.

FWIW, i think the rankings right now are a joke. Alot of teams ranked on reputation and their recruiting class. I am NOT impressedwith UNC’s wins. The Kentucky win? Meh. I think our freshmen, though maybe not as talented, are figuring it out quicker. Michigan State looked like they had not practiced or played since last season. Honestly, did not see the Louisville game.
