Happy Thanksgiving – All Weekend Sports Feast Open Thread

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 10.25.51 PMHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours from all of us here at Statefans Nation!  Hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend, that you get to spend time with loved ones and friends and of course get to watch some of the great sports action.  Chat about it here!

If you are driving long distance this weekend, here’s a recommendation for a smartphone application you might want to employ: Waze.  It’s a combination GPS mapping application, but comes with the added bonus of a social media component that can alert you about heavy traffic, wrecks ahead, and yes…patrolmen too.  The alerts about traffics and accidents are worth their weight in gold.

Here’s today’s sports major sports action:

Friday 11/29

Via The News and Observer. Games of special interest are highlighted in red.  The NFL is on hiatus for a couple of days, but we’ve got the chance to take a good look at some future hoops opponents, a good SEC tilt in football and two of our three regional pro teams are in action.  That, and the Pack’s Women’s Hoops team looks to continue their high-flying start this afternoon against Wright State in the Gulf Coast Showcase.  In toto, there’s plenty to keep us busy while our better halves go about their Black Friday shopping while we eat turkey sandwiches and sit in front of the television.

OSU is much more over-rated than Bama.

  2. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 7:56 PM #

Duke will give them a game but the Noles win on talent. Sparty is indeed no pushover but the Bucks are winning all the close ones. Aubie will have their hands full one way or another, so it may be a moot point after all. I just (selfishly) hope Famous Jameis gets his chance to show it all when the lights are the brightest. That would be a downer.

  3. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 7:56 PM #

The only advantage anyone had over FSU was Bama’s combination of coaching and big game experience. Now that’s gone.

It’s downright criminal we all saw so little of UGA/GT because of the drama on the Plains. That was some quality football too.

Three good games still on tap tonight, four if ND steps up a little.

  4. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 7:59 PM #

It is a very lively debate. OSU has done nothing but win them all two years running, albeit some very close calls against marginal teams. Aubie has just one loss in the greatest league in the world, and just slayed a dragon. They are certainly deserving. If you put the Bucks in the SEC my guess is they have at least two or three losses. But that is not the debate as we have it. It will be lively indeed.

FSU IMHO is the best team in the land. I dont think that is even debateable.

Winston has to win the Heisman now…right? Who else could it possibly be?

OSU has almost lost twice, to terrible opponents (Northwestern, Michigan). The best team they’ve played all year is Wisconsin, and they are in the 25-ish range. No way does that stand up to Bama’s body of work.

Florida State at least consistently beats the shit out of the flotsam every week.

  6. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 8:02 PM #

My guess is Winston has the Heisman pretty well locked up, assuming he himself isn’t so a week or so from now.

  7. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 8:05 PM #

Of course Bama is a better team than Ohio State. But we know it is also about when you lose. And Bama, as I called it earlier this year, didn’t even make it out of the SEC West, which is murderous.

  8. bill.onthebeach 11/30/2013 at 8:16 PM #

If JWinston plays one more game at the same level he’s played the season… ( remember the Heisman voting is before the Championship game ) AND he DOES NOT get the trophy, the reasons thereto will only tangentially be related to anything he may or may not have done off the field.

That said, of the games I have seen this season, I am looking at ‘Bama, Auburn and Stanford as more or less equal… Oregon, Missouri, TAMU and Clempson following closely.

I admit I have not seen OSU play, so I am hesitant to either include or exclude them with these three solely on the basis of game accounts written by sports — and I use the term loosely — journalists.

I trust you guys here at SFN more than that…. there’s often some modicum of truth even in the most insane posts here…. more so than say — that found on sport radio.

    R. Turner sux. Buckets isn’t feeling it yet. Suffering from poor ball handling/decisions against one of the best defensive teams in the country (who’s also a veteran team).

Will not be surprised if we lose tonight.

  10. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 8:19 PM #

Yeah, I am not saying who will get matched up, just who should based on who has the best body of work. As a fan, I want to see the best game. And I HATE rewarding a team like tOSU that played such a wretched schedule.

  11. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 8:30 PM #

Winston had my “vote” locked up already, pretty much. I am a big stats guy, and that YPA is just absurd. One of the best single QB seasons ever.

Go Tigers (the Mizzou variety that is) and go ‘Cocks. Let’s finish this day off on an upnote.

I don’t really have a dog in the UCLA/USC fight (no pun intended), but I’ll allegiance myself with the Trojans for the benefit of Mrs. ‘Dog.

Not looking so great at the moment tho. The ghost of Lane Kiffin lingers I suppose.

  13. Alpha Wolf 11/30/2013 at 10:18 PM #

Clemson just absolutely BLEW that game. Instead of the ball down 7, they gave away another 7 points and probably any chance of a wildcard BCS berth.

  14. bill.onthebeach 11/30/2013 at 10:19 PM #

    yep…scratch Clempson….

    tiggers do the “usual” downstate…

  15. Wufpacker 11/30/2013 at 10:55 PM #

Johnny Football looking a bit rattled now.

  16. MrPlywood 12/01/2013 at 1:28 AM #

Richard Howell had his third straight double-doube today, 23 & 12, leading his Idaho Stampede to their 3rd straight win.

Let’s hear it for Dabo, again! He is so much fun to beat! He’ll pout for months again now!!!

Fear the Other Hand, Dabo! Starting the count on the second hand now!

  18. Wulfpack 12/01/2013 at 1:00 PM #

Ohio State is ranked 2nd in the new AP poll. Will be interesting to see what the BCS standings reveal.

Michigan State is now 10th by the way, so that would be a very big win for the Bucks if they get it.

And anybody that had Aubie and Mizzou in the SEC Championship, please raise your hand now. What a year it has been.

  19. Wulfpack 12/01/2013 at 3:00 PM #

Glennon looked pretty good early on, but made a bonehead play in the second and now the Panthers are all over him and the Bucs in a blowout, that will essentially clinch a playoff spot for the Panthers. Still in the running for the division and the two seed as well. Best defense in the league.

  20. wufpup76 12/01/2013 at 6:30 PM #

Officiating pretty uneven early for the holes at UAB, even though UAB has a Roy boy as HC … go figure.

UAB really outplaying them early, but their whole team will be fouled out soon enough it looks … no worries for the holes.

  21. wufpup76 12/01/2013 at 8:16 PM #

UAB gets the win despite shooting about 5% from the field in the 2nd half. Really ugly game, but the holes lost so it was beautiful.

  22. bill.onthebeach 12/01/2013 at 8:34 PM #

    ^+1

  23. Wulfpack 12/01/2013 at 9:03 PM #

BCS Standings released and it will be FSU and Ohio State assuming both take care of business next week. Aubie actually isn’t all that close. Experts saying Bucks are in even if Aubie tops Mizzou in the ATL. Crazy turn of events.

  24. highstick 12/02/2013 at 9:57 PM #

Funny that everyone keeps saying(including a ton of Urange low information Tigger fans) that Clempson “gave those turnovers to the Cocks”…Never dawned on them that the Cocks caused them! Duh, huh…Who threw the ball, who called the play, who fumbled? Now who “picked those things”, who caused those fumbles(including the strip of Tayjay)…Why was Sammy afraid to catch the ball?

Been trying to convince everyone for years that they are a bunch of pussycats with an inflated record playing weak teams. Throw out Jawja, SC, and Fl. State and replace their SOS schedule with the average of the remaining and do you even get a “positive number”…and they only beat one of those 3 other teams…

And I’ve reminded people that even lowly NC State had a good shot at beating them if it had not been for a obvious bad call!

  25. MrPlywood 12/02/2013 at 10:15 PM #

RW is making NO look stoopid. I think I can hear the Seattle crowd from here as they go for the new world record – sound really travels across the water in the winter. 🙂
