Guest Column: Doeren Deserves Time To Turn Around The Football Program

Here at Statefans Nation, we welcome guest columns, and this recent one by wolfanatic caught our eye.  With only slight editing for formatting and a touch here and there to bring the content to date to include last week’s action, here it is.  The opinions are the original author’s and please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.  If you would like to submit a column for our consideration, please feel free to do so at the link in the top menubar.

Lynch mobs have a way of rapidly metastasizing, and their growth is often fed by emotion and a lack of reasoning. For those who are considering igniting their torches and heading down to the Murphy Center to demand the ouster of head football coach Dave Doeren, they would do well to defer to reason and patience instead of emotion.

While some Wolfpack faithful might wish to claim that “the jury is still out” in the case of Coach Doeren, or worse, they might want to consider that this “trial” has only just begun. By no means has the jury left the courtroom to deliberate. The prosecutors are seemingly anxious for a conviction, but the defendant in this case, must be given ample time and opportunity to defend himself against his accusers.  In this case, his accusers have a five game losing streak and the prospect of it lengthening to the end of this football season — and maybe beyond that.

Undoubtedly, the prosecution will attack Coach Doeren’s coaching decisions, but it will also dig deeper into his background to prove that he is not up to the task at hand. The jury will be reminded that Coach Doeren in his only other head coaching job inherited a successful program at Northern Illinois University from previous head coach Jerry Kill. Coming off an 11-3 season, Doeren’s primary task was to steady the helm and keep the ship in the channel. In that aspect, he succeeded by going 23-4 (.851) over two seasons, culminating in a BCS bowl-busting Orange Bowl berth. In other words, the prosecution would have the jury believe that Coach Doeren has little experience in building his own program and that quite possibly, he is incapable of doing so – that perhaps he is in a bit over his head.

His detractors will point out that the last time that N.C. State went fishing for a coach in Mid-American Conference waters, they reeled in Tom Reed from Miami of Ohio. Reed, like Doeren, was successful in his previous position posting a 34-19-2 (.636) record over five seasons. Coach Reed’s first season at State ended with a disastrous 3-8 record. Torches were lit then too, but cooler heads prevailed, and Reed was allowed two more campaigns. He ended up logging three successive 3-8 seasons before he was shown the road out of Raleigh.
The prosecution will also remind the jury that if not for Niklas Sade’s 48 yard field goal with 33 seconds left on the game clock, the Wolfpack would have lost at home to the Richmond Spiders – an FCS opponent. That harrowing victory, coupled with home wins against Conference USA bottom feeder Louisiana Tech and MAC lightweight Central Michigan remain the only notches on Coach Doeren’s “pistol” to date.

On the other hand, Doeren’s defenders will be quick to point out that while Tom Reed was indeed a failed hire in retrospect, even he was allowed three seasons to clot the gushing nose bleed that is Monte Kiffin’s legacy at State. Likewise, the Kiffin debacle lasted for three seasons also, and its report card shows a pathetic 16-17 record. History shows that since 1971, when Al Michaels was the interim head coach, no N.C. State head football coach has been given less than three seasons to produce positive results. To erase that precedent, at this point, would be unrealistic as well as unfair. Thankfully, Dr. Yow is no Quick Draw McGraw and can be expected to treat her hire fairly.

In his defense, Coach Doeren can also point out that while he showed up late to the recruiting game, he was still quite successful in his recruiting endeavors. Further, he can claim that when he went to check out the cupboard that his predecessor had left him, he ended up feeling a bit like Old Mother Hubbard. This was especially true at the quarterback position – arguably the most important position. It is becoming increasingly apparent why Brandon Mitchell was not given the reins to the Arkansas offense, and Pete Thomas has been merely adequate – at best.

Reality is a wet blanket that can smother the flames of irrational exuberance and unreasonable expectations. The lighting of lynch mob torches is not a means to an end, at least not yet. The truth is that the only lynch mob that Coach Doeren wishes to see when he looks out of his office window in the Murphy Center would be a mob of NIU offensive lineman surrounding Jordan Lynch with immediate eligibility papers in hand.  But that is equally unreasonable, so just hope that the Pack doesn’t end up in the reeds again.

    PrimeWolf,

Your comments are interesting. From what I read about Coach D, he is a methodical planner and is a good “X” & “O” coach. He is DEFINITELY an emotional coach and is a cheerleader.

We had a coach that was a “seat of the pants” or “Game” coach. He “played the game” and demanded that his players give it all. He was often criticized for NOT being properly prepared. His background was that as the JV coach, you had NO film….and he would use varying line-ups and tactics to win. His peers, who were very successful were the more structured coaches….

If you read his books and listen to his audio book, you get a really good insight into his personality. He was “achievement” driven and, unfortunately, MONEY became one of the goals for his family’s security. It was probably his downfall as he lost focus.

He DID win NCSU a national championship and if he had not been a “gut” coach, would never have gotten out of the first game…..we played something that sounded like toothpaste….Pepperdine.

Now, Coach D’s personality and Jimmy V’s are totally different, but their approach to coach has a lot of similarity. Interestingly, Jimmy V’s practices were a bit “unscheduled”. He was NOT a detail person. We have a BB coach that runs his practices with the precision of a German Train Engineer. His personality or charm reminds me, at least, of the ghost that perhaps haunts us now….

SO, I like Coach D’s approach. I do not know enough about his coordinators to made a call…..that is why we are paying him upwards of $2 Million. BUT, I’ll wager a fifth of Black Crown that IF he feels that he is NOT getting good advice or performance from an assistant or a DC, then he will not hold onto them.

Our Ex coach, a Marine (you are NEVER an Ex-Marine) did not have the ability to make changes in staffing. He was a great Prep General….but lacked the gut feel to make changes….either in a game or in his staff….and THAT is one of the many reasons that he is at UVA. The recruiting has been horrendous.

He had a stellar record at BC…and put together a line and defense that was very good. That helped showcase the talents of a couple of good QB’s…..some are playing on Sunday….

Your comments are interesting….Did you watch the 60 Minutes special the other night on Nick Saban. Now that is what you call a taskmaster and a coach and a prepper and a “Do it MY way or my SYSTEM or it is the highway….”.

Coach D seems like a little bit of a stickler for doing it HIS way and does not have the luxury of much talent….we all do (or should) know that.

So DD is passionate and takes chances. As old coach, being passionate for your players creates leaders and energy. Coaching without passion is like Pamela Anderson without Boobs whats the use.

Congrats to Mr. Glennon and Co.

  4. tjfoose1 11/11/2013 at 11:50 PM #

^ Ditto. Win #1. I’ve been impressed by Glennon thus far.

  5. bill.onthebeach 11/12/2013 at 12:14 AM #

^Yep… the kid’s confidence and decision making are improving noticeably with each game … not to mention that he looks pretty comfortable behind a NFL O-line….
    no dancing giraffe tonight.

Who would have guessed that ??

  6. BJD95 11/12/2013 at 7:10 AM #

He didn’t come close to saving me fantasy-wise, after the auspicious start. But congrats anyway to our most favored Giraffe.

I deserve my fate for starting the Colts D over the Panthers. Doh.

Just to play devil’s advocate, even if the fake punt was an “on the field call”, is that enough to give a free pass to the coaching staff; the ones that are charged with preparing the team for game situations? (For that particular play). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a not at all calling for firing but I’m certainly not above calling that a stupid decision for that play. There is a reason he took responsibility for the disaster that became of it — perhaps it WAS his responsibility. Guarantee that before they punt from now on, they are “reminding” the players IF they have the decision-making authority to audible on that particular play. I still like the long term outlook of the program with him in charge. This was mainly food for thought.

3 years will be given to DD. If no improvement he will be gone. Even DY can make a mistake now and then. That does not mean at all she is a bad AD. It just means it did not work out. That happens sometimes in life.

I think DD will get this thing turned around and we will then start bitching about why we can’t get pass the Peach Bowl like we use to do back in the day. So don’t worry fellow pack fans normality will make its return.

Coach mentions a lot the rebuilding process at Kansas while he was recruiting coordinator and LBs coach. That was a wild scene where they came out of perennial suckville to a Big 12 player, top 25 team to go along with an Orange Bowl.

DD wasn’t there for the later parts because Wisconsin snatched him up. Mangini ran a fine line with academic fraud for 4 players and a few tirades against his players. I’m comforted so far that DD treats his players with more dignity and “players coach” seems much more applicable the “dictator”

Those Kansas teams also had great LB production and @ Wisky the LBs really got it done but got overshadowed by the medias gushing praise of the OL and RB attack.

Uh oh, the DD & Tom Reed wave from the Mid America Conference.
We’re in deep trouble if DD is anything remotely similar to TR.
Please tell me, did TR like to fish?

OK, so no one’s calling for DD’s head but there are way to many criticizing (IMHO) and calling for changes. Let’s wait and see. As I have said before about play calling, the current Oregon team would have gone for it. When DD get’s his players, he’ll be more successful. If you only go for it according to some low risk criteria, the other team will not be surprised. That’s trick, go for it when no one thinks you will. And I’m bothered by the listing of years, 3 ,5 or whatever. The guy has already proved successful in year 1 – by recruiting! If he keeps that up every year, success is guaranteed. And you complainers get your facts straight. We had two (2) QB’s before DD arrived. DD brought in the other 3, all of which have played and helped. And TOBs back up QB was not redshirted because he was 5th best, from what I read he was 3rd best but no where near 2nd, and so saved to give us additional years. Yes, this year sucks, and TOBs brand of ball may have been more successful in the win column, but not much and we were in a downward trend. The Pack is climbing. And no I don’t think our record will hurt recruiting. This staff has way too much energy for that.

  12. packshrimpman 11/12/2013 at 10:08 PM #

Early into conference play we were all faced with the sad reality of our talent and depth. unX and dook were some tough losses however. I certainly hated the fake and the fourth attempt . Regardless, DD is our man and to wish anything other than huge success is to throw this program under the bus for another ??? Years.

  13. Primewolf 11/12/2013 at 11:03 PM #

    Adventuro,

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Valvano was more of a thinker than one might believe. His rapid foul strategy when behind by X point with Y minutes to play was a major reason we won a National Championship.

His strategy against Slama Jama was brilliant.

I am not ready to compare DD to the V.

Best of luck to DD and staff over the next few years.

  14. packplantpath 11/13/2013 at 7:30 AM #

While I still think the fake punt was a bad call for the game one the field at the time it was called, I’m wondering. We shall see. Either Coach D is a master game theory practitioner or very poor at weighing odds.

Good Morning to All Pack fans,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that took the time to read this article, and to SFN for posting it. I would be remiss not to add a special thanks to those that offered positive comments about the article. Your comments serve as inspiration to carry on an ongoing attempt at writing by a grizzled old wolf that shares your love for N.C. State sports. Once again, thanks to all for reading. Go Pack!!!

  16. Tuffy2 11/13/2013 at 11:31 AM #

I will never compare Jimmy V to anyone. That is just the way I will always see it. This is not to say a DD or a MG will fail by any means.

  17. Fastback68 11/14/2013 at 9:42 AM #

    FIRE EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!

God, I love reading SFN for the humor and the insanity. If it were up to me, I would sign DD to a six year contract (penned in blood of course) for two reasons. I saw a video clip of DD talking with a safety or corner that had been burned repeatedly in the still ongoing game. DD – “that receiver has owned you so far this game” the player responds with a muffled excuse. DD looks at the kid and simply states “we are going to fix that.” So kudos VTPackFan, DD is a players coach who does not act like a DICKtator or a sullen browbeater. We have a problem and we are going to work together and fix it.

Secondly, DD signed just as many three star recruits in his first SIX WEEKS of being hired as TOB did in 10.5 months, even after building a six year recruiting pipeline (LMAO). This year’s recruiting class looks pretty damn sweet with the possibility of even more kids signing.

As an alum and long time fan, is it really surprising to hear myself or other fans bitch about individual plays or games. I have read all SFN threads and many a PP forum. Take out actual game thread quotes and I don’t see a material number of fans calling for DD’s removal. Frankly, I would be more concerned with a State fan base that went silent on all topics. Apathy sucks way more than being 3-6.

Hopefully, one day we can stand in line together to go see a National Championship trophy for football and freely bitch about why it took so long to get our first. As always, GO PACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
