Guest Column: Doeren Deserves Time To Turn Around The Football Program

Here at Statefans Nation, we welcome guest columns, and this recent one by wolfanatic caught our eye.  With only slight editing for formatting and a touch here and there to bring the content to date to include last week’s action, here it is.  The opinions are the original author’s and please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.  If you would like to submit a column for our consideration, please feel free to do so at the link in the top menubar.

Lynch mobs have a way of rapidly metastasizing, and their growth is often fed by emotion and a lack of reasoning. For those who are considering igniting their torches and heading down to the Murphy Center to demand the ouster of head football coach Dave Doeren, they would do well to defer to reason and patience instead of emotion.

While some Wolfpack faithful might wish to claim that “the jury is still out” in the case of Coach Doeren, or worse, they might want to consider that this “trial” has only just begun. By no means has the jury left the courtroom to deliberate. The prosecutors are seemingly anxious for a conviction, but the defendant in this case, must be given ample time and opportunity to defend himself against his accusers.  In this case, his accusers have a five game losing streak and the prospect of it lengthening to the end of this football season — and maybe beyond that.

Undoubtedly, the prosecution will attack Coach Doeren’s coaching decisions, but it will also dig deeper into his background to prove that he is not up to the task at hand. The jury will be reminded that Coach Doeren in his only other head coaching job inherited a successful program at Northern Illinois University from previous head coach Jerry Kill. Coming off an 11-3 season, Doeren’s primary task was to steady the helm and keep the ship in the channel. In that aspect, he succeeded by going 23-4 (.851) over two seasons, culminating in a BCS bowl-busting Orange Bowl berth. In other words, the prosecution would have the jury believe that Coach Doeren has little experience in building his own program and that quite possibly, he is incapable of doing so – that perhaps he is in a bit over his head.

His detractors will point out that the last time that N.C. State went fishing for a coach in Mid-American Conference waters, they reeled in Tom Reed from Miami of Ohio. Reed, like Doeren, was successful in his previous position posting a 34-19-2 (.636) record over five seasons. Coach Reed’s first season at State ended with a disastrous 3-8 record. Torches were lit then too, but cooler heads prevailed, and Reed was allowed two more campaigns. He ended up logging three successive 3-8 seasons before he was shown the road out of Raleigh.
The prosecution will also remind the jury that if not for Niklas Sade’s 48 yard field goal with 33 seconds left on the game clock, the Wolfpack would have lost at home to the Richmond Spiders – an FCS opponent. That harrowing victory, coupled with home wins against Conference USA bottom feeder Louisiana Tech and MAC lightweight Central Michigan remain the only notches on Coach Doeren’s “pistol” to date.

On the other hand, Doeren’s defenders will be quick to point out that while Tom Reed was indeed a failed hire in retrospect, even he was allowed three seasons to clot the gushing nose bleed that is Monte Kiffin’s legacy at State. Likewise, the Kiffin debacle lasted for three seasons also, and its report card shows a pathetic 16-17 record. History shows that since 1971, when Al Michaels was the interim head coach, no N.C. State head football coach has been given less than three seasons to produce positive results. To erase that precedent, at this point, would be unrealistic as well as unfair. Thankfully, Dr. Yow is no Quick Draw McGraw and can be expected to treat her hire fairly.

In his defense, Coach Doeren can also point out that while he showed up late to the recruiting game, he was still quite successful in his recruiting endeavors. Further, he can claim that when he went to check out the cupboard that his predecessor had left him, he ended up feeling a bit like Old Mother Hubbard. This was especially true at the quarterback position – arguably the most important position. It is becoming increasingly apparent why Brandon Mitchell was not given the reins to the Arkansas offense, and Pete Thomas has been merely adequate – at best.

Reality is a wet blanket that can smother the flames of irrational exuberance and unreasonable expectations. The lighting of lynch mob torches is not a means to an end, at least not yet. The truth is that the only lynch mob that Coach Doeren wishes to see when he looks out of his office window in the Murphy Center would be a mob of NIU offensive lineman surrounding Jordan Lynch with immediate eligibility papers in hand.  But that is equally unreasonable, so just hope that the Pack doesn’t end up in the reeds again.

Thank you, posters on this column, for the thoughtful and informed comments.

Comments on other columns had me wondering if the quality of this community had died with the forums.

If you want to run a good analysis then work with this hypothesis –> NC State is the most patient fan base over the last 25 years in all of the BCS conferences.

Run the data – you can cut it a few different ways.

Not sure why the original was even posted about DD. Like the passion, but it runs the risk of producing the opposite.

” I am sorry. I dispute the entire premise that there’s even a significant minority calling for dd’s head.”

Read the previous columns on this very site, there have been several. Flattop83 is the most moronic I remember, but there were several, and their numbers seemed to be growing.

I called ’em out, using such terms as “stupid” and “idiot”, and was gently chided for it, gently. I half expected my posts to be deleted for the direct criticism of other posters, but their comments were so absurb, there really was no debate for anyone with reasonable understanding.

Heck, even Lou went 0-11 in his first year at South Carolina, the won Coach of the Year in the SEC the next year..

DD has not proven himself to be a Professor Lou yet though…Short leash, I’d guess…You gotta remember that “desperate situations sometimes demand desperate play calling”…now if it gets to be a habit, that’s different…

I remember playing on a team so bad that we had trouble scoring…until we started making up plays in the huddle that we could pull off…

  6. archdalepack 11/11/2013 at 6:29 PM #

Choppack1 Is correct. Just because I question a stupid call (the fake punt/ TFP), does not mean I want to fire the coach. Call a time out to adjust kick off return position with less than 4 minutes in game, does not mean I want to fire the coach. However, DD did make decision to redshirt Stocker, then recruit Mitchell, the Arkansaw flash!

So the second part of this argument was that the talent level is weaker than ever other team in the ACC! Really, I must be watching a different team on Saturdays. How many yards on ground against UNX? Duke? Clemson? FSU? Are State’s QB’s calling their own plays? Formations? This team has been wreaked by injuries, but the coach DD is not without blame.

If you watched Duke game then you heard announcers question DD’s tactics! I’m less of a state fan because I have doubts about his in game decisions. If you watched game then you also saw Cutcliffe laugh after the timeout on kick off. DD owns this team and it’s performance. Don’t like calling out players, prefer calling out coaches!

I have VERY mixed feelings about this column. I have read about all the almost 500 posts about the Duke game and also the E to the X number for the UNC.

I also thought that folks that were (what is the equivalent of Jaw Jacking on a keyboard…..exercising your digits?) just airing their frustration.

I never really thought that ANYONE with any credibility was suggesting the following

Debbie Yow was to be removed immediately by Dr. Woodson (there are some that wrote about that elsewhere)

Dave Doeren was to be relieved of Command BEFORE the midnight (reminiscent of Lane Kiffin being pulled in the airport and the locks on the USC facility being changed)

A wealthy trio of donors were on Murph’s plane headed to Charlottesville with CA$H to bring back Obrien…..and their second destination was Akron for Amato….

Another trio of donors were California bound with an equal booty to bring Sonny Dykes to Raleigh…..since he is probably NOT the hero and savior that CA touted him to be.

Seriously….again…..have you seen Doeren’s Presser this afternoon. That is the MOST relaxed that I have seen the coach since the BEGINNING of the UNC game.

Don’t know if he and Debbie had a Subway takeout for lunch and he and she are on the same page…..but he DOES stand up for his beliefs.

Much of the criticism HERE about TOB was that you did NOT need to be a very savvy DC for our opponents and that you would see (fill in the blank) on the second down on every series.

SO, DD is a little OFF THE WALL.

I STILL think that he will bring some good things here. I did a little looking and the immortalized (and lately villianized) Mack Brown went 2 and 20 in his first TWO seasons….

SO, let the key pounding continue…..it helps vent frustration…..but bear in mind…..it is MOSTLY anonymous…..

Let’s hope that we do not have the equivalent of Wendell Williams in our midst…..when he got irritated at the UNC Law School (where he was a classmate of my son), he took to Franklin and “expressed” his dissatisfaction. Pity he did not have a keyboard outlet for his issues.

Thanks for reading MY rant…..I am going out for an adult beverage with my DW on her Birthday….

No one stated the current admin was even considering the thought of possibly maybe thinking of dismissing Doeren.

But there were dumbasses saying we should “cut our losses” now and fire DD. I’ve never shied away from calling a dumbass by his sign.

  9. 13OT 11/11/2013 at 8:07 PM #

After enduring the passiveness of TOB, HWSNBN and Lowe, it’s refreshing to see a Wolfpack HC finally get really fired up like DD did Saturday, even if the locker room couldn’t contain it.

Like someone said earlier, it’s like deck chairs on the Titanic. We ain’t got no talent, period. And until we do get some, I don’t see anyone else out there who could do much better than DD right now.

Anybody here going to Mike Glennon watch get his first NFL victory tonight ??

  11. Greywolf 11/11/2013 at 8:23 PM #

    @archdalepack

“However, DD did make decision to redshirt Stocker, then recruit Mitchell, the Arkansaw flash!”

Did you mean to say, “DD redshirted Stocker after Stocker proved to be the 5th QB behind Mitchell, Thomas, Shirreff, and Taylor.” because that’s exactly what happened. (Yes, Stocker was behind a walk-on in his status.)

  12. archdalepack 11/11/2013 at 8:37 PM #

So without Mitchell, we would only have 4 inefficient QB’s? Would our record be worse without Mitchell?

    personally,
i’m tired of posts starting with:
    1. needs time.
    2. turn around.
    3. (pick another).

    i look forward to:
    1. domination.
    2. champions.
    3. dynasty.

  14. Avid109 11/11/2013 at 9:04 PM #

    Nice column!

Coach Doeren ought to show measurable improvement by year #3. If he can recruit well, we could see some signs of improvement next year.

Even the best coaches get the ire of the fans. Coach Sheridan was criticized for being too conservative on offense (many were calling for Ted Cain to be fired). A few fans also complained that he was not getting any highly-ranked recruits.

  15. tjfoose1 11/11/2013 at 9:18 PM #

    Giraffe strut alert!

  16. Primewolf 11/11/2013 at 9:29 PM #

Of course he will get a few years.

However, the timing of these risky calls was atrocious.
Most high risk plays fail. You take them when the reward outweighs the risk. Otherwise you don’t. There is a time to take play calling risk on 4th downs and neither one of those passed that test. Plus the play call of handing the ball off 7 yards deep when you need a few inches didn’t make sense to me.

My observations are that DD is an emotional cheerleading type of coach (and a good recruiter). He is not analytical and makes emotional decisions in the game that lack the proper risk reward metrics.

I think coach needs some very smart, analytical types of Coordinators. I think the OC is not up to the task, frankly. I don’t think it is going to take years to figure that out. I would like to see us replace Canada ASAP. You can see the product of a good coordinator, even if the talent level is down. This is just random sh^& that is being phoned down, IMO.

Hey, who is coaching our QBs. I suppose it is Canada. What are his credentials in that area.

I am not convinced the DC is any good. But at least he is not totally incompetent.

My guess is that if we have the same coaching staff for 3 years, Coach D will be gone. Folks will be sick of the product and stupidity by then.

Hope I am totally wrong on all counts. However, what I have seen the past 4 games puts a serious damper on my previous optimism.

  17. mak4dpak 11/11/2013 at 9:35 PM #

This horrible team and coaching staff that is complained about still can end up with a bowl. Turnovers have killed us. They have to stop, and that is on the players. So it starts this Saturday at BC. No QB interceptions! And yes we have the Pirates, but we can beat them. Again the only turnovers we need are the ones we force on the other team.

  18. bill.onthebeach 11/11/2013 at 9:36 PM #

Glennon brings his Bucs out strong …. looks sharp….

Bucs up 15-0 in the second…

I was in the car listening to ESPN-radio.earlier.. and the announcer referred to Glennon as “the rookie out of NC State” and then “mentioned” another NC State QB in the NorthWest and a third NC State QB down in San Diego…

The color guy, believe it or not, asked the obvious question…

“What’s going on at NC State ???”.

  19. Wufpacker 11/11/2013 at 9:57 PM #

Yep, Glennon and the Bucs looks strong tonight so far.

But don’t tell BJD that. He’s all “half a point for a keeper 1st down” this, and “1 point per ten yards passing” that.

Just enjoy the game, ya damn fantasy nerd. 😀

  20. tjfoose1 11/11/2013 at 10:08 PM #

I got Mike James in my lineup. He goes down to injury on the goal line with me down 5 points. Figures.

  21. Wufpacker 11/11/2013 at 10:16 PM #

LOL, that was BJD’s favorite play of the night so far.

Netted himself 7 on the following Glennon TD pass.

  22. choppack1 11/11/2013 at 10:24 PM #

Just fyi…I am not saying no one is saying anything so foolish, I just think it is a tiny minority. And anyone who says dd should be fired now for performance is an idiot.

Personally I think you have to give THIS coach 5 years due to his youth and relative inexperience unless you see 2 more years of this.

  23. flattop83 11/11/2013 at 10:26 PM #

This column is spot on – we have to give Doeren his chance. Having the lead at 6:37 in the 4th at dook and losing by 18 defines the current state of our program (weak talent, no true QB, etc.).

I did ‘rant’ irrationally after the embarrassing loss to the holes and ‘tfoose’ called me out – he should have. It was uncalled for – I was seriously frustrated by our showing in CF even knowing logically we don’t have the talent to compete.

DD has to have his chance to prove he can build the program and I hope he gets it done! BC may be our best chance to get one more win this season – otherwise, we got next year.

Also hoping to see Glennon & company finish one tonight.

  24. Wufpacker 11/11/2013 at 10:43 PM #

Wow, this is awesome. A ‘coming together’ among us wuffies.

Can we roast marshmallows and sing Kumbaya now?

    😉
