At Least There’s Basketball

The anti-climactic finish to the 2013 Football season is mercifully over.

At least for us.

Time to reload those fragile emotions for basketball.

The Pack is at home tonight facing the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky.

ESPN3 game, already underway (Pack currently trailing…don’t say it)

A Link to a non-ESPN3 stream for those who need it.

Talk about it here….

A couple of additional thoughts …
We’ve got to figure out how to hit a three point shot. I seem to remember that Moxley’s resume boasted coaching some great outside shooters. Lock he and the guards in the gym until we can hit 5-6 a game.

Rebounding has improved. Tonight on a couple of occasions I saw two of our guys wrestling each other for one. Not a problem, indication of hustling for position and the ball. Looking forward to playing a bigger team to see if it is real.

I think we may have seen our standard rotation tonight. Cat, Dez, TJ, Nard and Vandy started. Gott only brought in Kyle, Turner and Tyler off the bench. Cynical me says that when the season starts, and night in and out we are dealing with higher quality bigs, we’ll see more of Beejay for the extra five fouls.

Cat: your handles are possibly the best a State player has possessed since color film was mainstream. Please stop turning the ball over.

Lewis: coach wants to play you more but you get abused on defense worse than Osama Bin laden abused his red headed step child. You are an awesome backup and could start your senior year once Cat goes pro after his soph season . Please stay.

Cat: please stay all 4 years.

Des: nice 3 at the end to put a dagger in the game.

Refs: I don’t think I noticed you guys during this game. That means you were fair. Expect a reprimand.

IMO, that’s the best five we have. I think that the more minutes that Cat gets the better he will be with the ball, but I love his playmaking.

And props to the coaches for the in-game adjustments. We certainly grouse about them making mistakes on the bench, so let’s be fair and give them some applause when they get it right. In the second half, I saw glimpses of something called “defense” – which led to the big lead and the easy win.

Hell of a turn around tonight. This team has a better chemistry than our last installment. In the face of adversity they seem to respond better. They also seem to want to play defense. The key will be for them to keep that attitude for longer periods of time. This will be a very interesting year…

Well, it seems someone wants to hire Mike Leach as a basketball coach.

Without harping on the naysayers from the preseason article about Vandy too much, I’ll just reiterate what I said then: Vandenberg doesn’t have to be the second coming of Burleson to make this team go from average to good. His mere presence, on the court, in the right place, knowing the sets, makes this team run much smoother. Yes, we love the Vandendunks and the blocks, but it is easy to see that even the threat of those things makes the other team play differently. I think this early season success is important for him, because it builds confidence, and “reputation”. If he can keep the fouls down, and prove himself to be a viable threat, I think he can get maybe just a little respect from opposing coaches and from the officials. We all know that the way the games will be called will change once we hit league play, and especially against the blues. If Vandy can continue to develop good “tendencies”, it will be beneficial to him once those big games get here.

Also, having seen the team in person for the first time last night, I was very impressed with Vandy’s leadership on the court. He was very vocal, especially with the young guys, directing them where to go on both ends of the court. He is a little too eager to call for the ball, or point up to the rim asking for an alleyoop, but perhaps that is a good thing, as it can pull the defenders towards him. All in all, very please with the big guy’s improvement so far, and only a little bit frustrated that it took him four years to do it.
