Weekend Sports Open Thread

Tonight, you have Louisville’s last legitimate chance to lose – and spare us the vomit-inducing “they can only play the schedule they have” pablum from the talking heads. As I have noted before, I wouldn’t have Louisville in my Top 10, and tOSU wouldn’t make my Top 5. Schedules matter, and fetishizing undefeatedness is stupid. There’s also my beloved baseball Cardinals trying to make Fox execs cry by eliminating the Dodgers.

The Pack also has its not-quite-midnight madness event tonight, and maybe some folks can report back. I believe its also streaming on GoPack.com this year, which is nice (if it works).

Tomorrow is headlined by Texas A&M vs. Auburn (3:30, CBS) and of course, Florida State at Clemson (8:00, ABC). This game is really the Noles’ first test, but not Clemson’s. I think that, plus home field, are sufficient to spring the Tiggers to victory. And into clear pole position if Bama or Oregon loses – Clemson is the one team that (in my humble but correct opinion) plays a tough enough slate to not need Bama to lose twice.

Sunday’s RedZone Channel-gasm will be a mere appetizer to Peyton Manning taking my beloved Broncos to Indy to shut Jim Irsay’s fat, stupid mouth. Run up the score, John Fox. My fantasy team needs it.

With the Pack on bye, we can just enjoy sports without the usual quota of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Plus the Holes have already lost. Huzzah.

Miami will be moving into the top 5, so it is just way too early to say FSU won’t be there. A loss by either Bama or Oregon and they are a virtual lock. And as I have said, Bama has no easy road. Tennessee and Auburn are pushovers no more, and LSU is out for blood.

Nationally, Baylor and Mizzou move into the title picture as darkhorses. Baylor beat Iowa State 71-7. Holy smokes.

Giraffe sprint alert. Glennon with a 13 yard scramble for a 1st down. The kid is looking pretty comfortable today, 2 TDs, no INTs.

So probably not gonna happen, but just thinking we get robbed in the Clemson game, FSU kills them. We go into Tallahassee with Mitchell at QB, and FSU overlooking us. UPSET! That could definitely make me forget the last three losses to Clemson, Wake, Syracuse, as well as see what a different team we are with Mitchell at QB. Here’s hoping, and no I am not drinking! Go Pack! At least make a game of it, anyway.

Moral victory if we score a TD. Double moral victory if we stay within 30.

I wonder if the Stillers have a mini-run in them.

As long as Alabama remains unbeaten, it will be all but impossible for them to drop below #1 in this poll, and it’ll be an absolute impossibility for them to drop below #2 if they go 13-0. And it’s just as likely that Ohio State won’t rise above #3 unless 2 of these top 4 teams lose. The other unbeaten teams in this poll have little if any chance of moving higher than 3rd, regardless of how well they play.

The #2 and #3 teams in this poll, FSU and Oregon, will probably flip-flop back and forth between #2 and #3, depending on how much they can impress the BCS pollsters from week to week. I still think that Alabama and Oregon are the nation’s two best teams. FSU’s victory margin to me is what moved them past Oregon, who surely had to have been ahead of the ‘Noles had the BCS come out a week ago.

The BCS rewards teams for running up the score, as it surely did when FSU hung 51 on the Tigers and were ranked ahead of the Ducks, who were 3 spots ahead of FSU in the last AP poll. Now that Jimbo’s boys see not only a BCS title game berth but also a possible Heisman winner on their team, they’ll go all out Saturday.

If they can hang 80 on us, they will, and they won’t let up until the final buzzer. Such is the BCS.
