Pack/Orange Cowdog Appreciation Day Semi-Live Blog

We will have to see if the action on the field makes things raging.

And yes, it is Cowdog Appreciation Day at Carter-Finley. Rumour is that we might even hear from the man/canine hisself at some point. Stay tuned.

You younger types might have forgotten how NC State single handedly ruined two Donovan McNabb Heisman campaigns, in 1997 and 1998 (I think those dates are accurate). Each time, Syracuse was ranked in the Top Ten. First, we won in the Carrier Dome in amazing fashion. Forced a goalline fumble late in regulation, saving the tie. After Cuse got a quick TD in OT, we got a much harder earned one…then wisely went for two, to Orange confusion. Torry Holt was wide open for the game winner. The next year (I believe on a late-September Thursday night), the Pack mauled an even better Cuse squad in C-F. Just part of the inexplicable roller coaster ride that was the MOC era. And setting the stage for McNabb puking on the field in the Super Bowl.

Nobody is Heisman or Top Ten-worthy today…but maybe we see the electric Brandon Mitchell today. Based on poll results, SFN readers expect a win, but not a cover. Sounds about right to me. Then again, I expected Oklahoma to roll today. Oops.

3:34 – Definitely the smart move to play it safe with Mitchell and roll with Thomas. Big rushing gain on Cuse’s opening play.

3:37 – What crazy thing will Ron Cherry say/call today?

3:38 – Holding call forces Orange to throw, which they seem to do pretty poorly. Time to punt.

3:42 – Mirror image drive from State – one first down, then punt. Thrilling stuff.

4:01 – Syracuse certainly showing more on D than they did hosting the Tiggers. Gonna be a tough slog.

4:05 – Cuse 4th down at State 37. Big play.

4:08 – Timeout, penalty, punt. Anticlimactic. Story of the game so far.

4:20 – First and goal for the Cuse at the 1. Not looking good.

4:28 – Offense finally on the move. At least a bit.

4:30 – I think the cold hard truth of us not being at all good…is sinking in.

4:32 – Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Wolfpack lining up to punt.

4:34 – Momentum changing roughing the kicker? It’s nice when somebody else is stupid.

4:36 – Yes, Ron Cherry pronounces “interference” as strangely as one would imagine.

4:38 – 4th and 2, Pack going for it. Or maybe just lining up.

4:39 – BOTH teams now out of timeouts with 7 minutes left in the half.

5:23 – Pack in scoring position, can amazingly take the lead as the weather deteriorates.

5:24 – And SHB does the one thing he can’t do – take a sack. 51-yard FG is…way no good. The extra 5 yards is a killer there.

5:26 – Cardinals get runner to 3rd with no outs AGAIN – and halfway to wasting the opportunity AGAIN. 0-0.

5:28 – Crawford noodle arms what should have been no chance deep enough into a sac fly. 1-0 Redbirds.

5:31 – Syracuse avoids a negative play to set up a long, but makeable FG. They do make it…but commit a delay of game. Comedy of errors.

5:33 – Now they punt…which nets 11 yards. This game would be taken out back and shot, if only it were a horse. Or Old Yeller.

5:42 – Puig swings at ball four, with one out and bases f-cked. Woohoo!!!

5:43 – Pack goalline stand while I was watching el beisbol, short FG is good. 10-7 Orange. A win without covering would look like 14-10, folks.

5:44 – Uribe also strikes out, 1-0 after 6. Michael Wacha’s legend grows.

5:48 – I am cool with the pink stuff to promote funds for breast cancer research (except for penalty flags). But can we please quit calling it “awareness?” Who isn’t AWARE at this point?

5:51 – Pack almost to the 30, big third down.

5:52 – Quick snap fake FG doesn’t work. FFS.

5:55 – 10-7 after three. Would not be surprised if it was 10-7 after four. Syracuse will – all together now – punt once again when Q4 starts.

6:01 – Syracuse’s front seven is just teeing off now. Brutal.

6:07 – Tis Syracuse’s turn to punt. Could cut the tension with a spork.

6:09 – Siegrist just gets out of a jam, 1-0 Cards mid-7.

6:11 – No shit – SHB with a 40-yard run, and State in long FG position yet again.

6:13 – MVS falls down on 3rd and 3, short FG for the tie is good. 10-10.

6:18 – Defense looks energized. Cuse QB is putrid.

6:21 – Pack to the Cuse 43 and suddenly the Orange look sluggish.

6:23 – An ugly win is still a win. It would suck to lose to a team playing this bad (each team can feel that way).

6:25 – I was watching baseball again, and somehow Cuse is in the end zone. Fuuuuccccck. Door is open with the bobbled hold on the extra point. 16-10. At least there can’t possibly be overtime in this shitshow. Oh, and Cards need three more outs.

6:29 – 77 yards to “glory.”

6:31 – Three and out, SHB can’t find a hot read, and of course we don’t block anyone.

6:32 – I guess “defensive battle” is the network euphemism since they can’t say “shitshow.”

6:34 – And with that 40+ yard run…ballgame.

6:35 – Your straw-graspy silver lining – it would be awesome to beat the Holes going into the game 0-4 in conference play.

6:37 – TD Orange, they fake the extra point for two. 24-10. Any further live blogging will be of the top of the 9th in SL.

6:44 – Trevor Rosenthal takes the bump.

6:45 – Puig gets fourth strikeout, and acts like a baby as usual. 2 to go.

6:46 – Uribe strikes out. 1 to go.

6:47 – Sad AIDS trombone for Magic, as Rosie Ks Ethier too!!! Cards win 1-0 and head to LA with a 2-0 series lead.

Your Final Score – Syracuse 24, NC State 10.

Long sad season to go. Five wins is the ceiling. Clemson game defense was fools gold.

Agree Texpack! Great effort and game plan on both sides of the ball and have not seen it since!

There is only one thing enjoyable about this team this season and you have to get a ticket on the visitors side near the field (or bring some binoculars).

Our “fast pace” no huddle offense takes the whole clock to go through a series of placards, some that are just too fricken funny. I’ve seen one that had Clifford the Big Red Dog and another with Principal Belding from Saved by the Bell. Between that show and switching over to the dance team you really have no reason to watch any of the jack-assary on the playing field.

” What does our starting center and Jacoby Brissette have to do with Cuse averaging 10 yards a carry?”

Well, for one, they’re not running those plays if Jacoby has the ball. If we have a potent offense with just the threat of racking up points, their play calling changes. If we have a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter, their QB is putting the ball in the air (which is definitely what we wanted) vs handing it off.

… And the defense was a lot more banged up that just C-B. We had another DL get injured, Bryd was already out. Tocho got injured in the 2nd quarter. Still played and tackled poorly, though. Today, Syracuse was simply tougher up front, on both sides of the ball. I’m just not bitchin about it ’cause I can see why.

Doesn’t mean I’m ok with it. Just acknowledging the realities. BEFORE the injuries, we had a thin roster with a patchworked 2-deep cobbled together by a first year staff.

What would you have them do? I already give them an A++ major kudos rating for seeing the needs and taking all those proactive offseason efforts to improve the roster with recruiting and transfers.

The roster is what it is. You can’t fault the players for being what they are. Thomas is a good example. He admits he’s a pro-style QB (I’ll add average, at best) and his skill set is not well suited for this offense. But both he and the coaches are doing their best to make a square peg fit a round hole and maximize his effectiveness.

As long as I continue to see the effort, I’m good for this season. If I see anything approaching UVA 2012, then Ill join in with the naysayers.

On the bright side, if DD came in and won 10 games in year 1, others start imediately to court both Canada and DD before they settle in and develop roots. If they didn’t leave, they likely might in following seasons when calls for their heads are made for only winning 8 or 9 games.

I, for one, feel fortunate we have them. Hope they both stay around for a long time.

    +the interwebs for that ‘foose.

If there is any gripe I have, it is that Doeren can really improve in the time management department. I do think it is a byproduct of having a tire fire offensive unit, though.

“Somewhere out there TOB is having a good
    laugh!”

    Why?

I think I’d give the thumbs up to DD in the category of how and where they left their former program.

If I were TOB, I’d be embarrassed. I know he ain’t though, he stopped making caring efforts severals seasons ago.

I haven’t read all the comments yet, but I did want to note this from BJD in the live blog: “I think the cold hard truth of us not being at all good…is sinking in”

Yeah that’s pretty much where I’m at too. I knew we were thin, & missing too many starters, and I did not have big expectations for this year. But I was foolishly optimistic that we wouldn’t get dominated by Wake and Syracuse.

I do like what some of the freshmen and sophomores are doing. With some young talent and some promising coaches I do have optimism for the future. I think if we can just get that offensive line fixed in the next year or two, this will look like a completely different team. Got to get some scores and keep our defense from getting battered down and worn out.

this TOB thing…been hired and hired and fired
and hired and….looks like a good gig to me.

  11. eas 10/12/2013 at 8:35 PM #

I agree we very week all around and need some time to work with better recruiting (which is already happening).

Now to my major frustration and agreement with VTpackfan. How in $&?$ does it take the entire clock to run a no huddle offense? I know the story line….new system, players, injuries, Pete, blah blah blah. A no huddle is useless if you run the clock like a huddle. If you can’t run a quick no huddle then go back to the huddle! I mean I personally LOVE the no huddle but not this junk. Speed it up for goodness sakes. I think some mistakes/penalties are occurring just because there is too much time for them to sit through audibles and play call. Good gosh…

  12. packpowerfan 10/12/2013 at 8:44 PM #

Nah ‘foose, I’m just more sober than I ought to be after a game like this. Kidney cancer scare means less drinking, more exercise, etc.

Unless something is being posted about “MY SISTER MADE $600 A DAY WORKING FOUR HOURS USING THIS SIMPLE TRICK.”

That would indeed be a problem, and it would be Rick’s fault.

  13. redcanine 10/12/2013 at 8:50 PM #

1- I have nothing critical to say about the coaches, players, or tonight’s game. Probably because my voice is hoarse. Too buzzed to really keep up with every injury and failed conversion. Que sera sera.

    2. CowDog: I didn’t know which one you were, so I just clapped for everyone. Nice touch with Coach Holtz’ filmed monologue via Jumbotron.

    3. The noise/volume on that pa system sucks.

    4. Our PA announcer “iced” Sade right in the middle of his backswing (if that’s what u call it). Un-freakin-believable.

#3 and #4 should NEVER happen.

  14. john of sparta 10/12/2013 at 9:23 PM #

    red…exactamont.
    our Public Address Announcer
and all of the PA’s accoutremonts
    should be reassigned or fired.
    never ever again.

  15. vtpackfan 10/12/2013 at 9:26 PM #

Syracuse substituted guys on Defense each play. The only reason DD says the no huddle works is that it doesn’t allow this-WTF!

We actually aren’t getting worse and the it’s not the injuries. We now have game tape of our freak show and teams can pick and choose what areas they want to exploit the most.

I agree with most that’s being said. Just try hard, you know, effort crap. Just hope many of the 2014 verbal commits are going to stick it through. Maybe they don’t watch ESPN 3.

  16. wufpup76 10/12/2013 at 10:36 PM #

    ^^I agree w/ foose’s assessment above.

I actually see reason for optimism for the future. I kinda have the feeling of “get us this season and maybe next, after that, we’re gonna be really tough”. I’m definitely not saying we should ignore mistakes or anything, but I have a ‘see the forest for the trees’ outlook for this season.

I’m hoping in a couple of seasons many issues will be shored up and we at least have the potential to be (competently) two deep at each position. Anyway, IMO there’s nothing but good things to say about the kids’ collective efforts this season … that’s at least one positive for me.

  17. PackFamily 10/12/2013 at 10:56 PM #

In regards to our no-huddle; the goal is not to go fast. It is to accomplish some over things: 1. See what the defense is giving you. 2. Control tempo by going fast or regular depending on what you want to do, 3. Control defensive substitutions.

Now I can see the points about them executing it well. It’s just not about always going fast.

  18. mak4dpak 10/12/2013 at 11:04 PM #

For weeks I too have complained the no huddle offense is quite slow with no urgency. And the quarterback? Don’t get me started. So he is doing the best he can, but his best ain’t cutting it, and now 2 losses in a row. Hoping for the week off to recover, and heal, and bring back Mitchell, please! He is the only hope we have in staying in the game. at least if we are scoring, the defense is on the sidelines, @ FSU.

  19. eas 10/13/2013 at 9:02 AM #

Ok so the no huddle isn’t always fast (it is more fun when it is IMHO). However, teams can substitute all freaking day and make changes when you use the entire play clock. Regardless this will never work if it can’t be quicker. Even if it isn’t fast it should be efficient with quick an delayed plays mixed in. Our QB situation feels like the days of old again minus a few good QB’s in between.

The good things I see: motivated team, sidelines seem more alive, recruiting, potential of a good offense (it sucks now but I see potential with a good QB), looks like they are having more fun than previous years.

The Bad: A good bit to be honest BUT for now we can blame TOB for some of the talent issues. Sorry but DD has his work cut out for him with rebuilding. I’m not so sure he doesn’t have his work cut out for him on the “coaching” stand point. I like the guy a lot and his attributes (recruiting and player interaction). I just hope we see some big changes soon. Even with lower talent levels and injuries we still seem to be putting the exact same product on the field. If we loose so be it but do it differently or through better in game adjustments.

    Go pack!

  20. vtpackfan 10/13/2013 at 11:32 AM #

I really see your points and think that is a reasonable outlook. Looking big picture it’s really hard to determine if this staff has X’s & O’s and readjustments concepts in their wheelhouse. It is impossible to evaluate even a minuscule amount of Canada’s system ceiling with this QB and OL.

Hate to beat a dead horse but QB & OL was supposed to be TOB’s calling card. No OL he recruited is playing Sunday and he went from Glennon to Brosius (baseball in the Mountains) to Taylor (Baseball for Wolfpack) to Stocker and Pistol Pete.

It took DD about six months to call on a Calvary. Mitchell, Bressete, and the athletic 2014 QB out of Charlotte. Heck, Sherrifs could work into a solid back up, and should pan out as talented FB at the least.

  21. wolfpup44 10/13/2013 at 4:18 PM #

I want to be positive, but…..we played a worse team and got beat. I am not a fan of DD. We should have had more patience with TOB, but Yow would not let the guy breathe. I was tired of hearing their dislike for each other. You cannot be successful with a poor relationship. Now with DD we have our 7th or 8th rebuilding program since our last ACC title. This year will be ugly, next year will be difficult at best with no 4 or 5 star commits to date. DD also has very deep ties to Midwest at UW and Neb. I don’t see him sticking around if he has marginal success. It’s easy to bag on TOB but the deal was toxic. So I hope I am wrong but my annual donation goes for wins……wins that will get us an ACC championship, not mid level bowl games.

  22. mak4dpak 10/13/2013 at 4:43 PM #

Mitchell returns and we go 9-3. It don’t hurt to dream! But no more Thomas, for Pete’s sake! Did I just make a funny? Go Pack!

  23. Wulfpack 10/13/2013 at 5:53 PM #

It is simply not fair to judge Doeren this year. Just look at the cards he has been dealt. We have very little talent, thanks to TOB, injuries across the board, and he is trying to lay the foundation for a new system. It will be an uphill battle. It would be an uphill battle for Nick Saban and Urban Meyer as well. So just hold your horses.

TOB stunk out loud. If you cannot now see that then I question your football intelligence.

  24. ACCSportsCritic 10/13/2013 at 9:43 PM #

State is staring down the barrel of a 3-9 season! Definitely can’t beat FSU, UNC, Duke, or ECU and most likely won’t beat BC or Maryland either. Best case will be a 4-8 season.

  25. ACCSportsCritic 10/13/2013 at 9:53 PM #

State’s last ACC football championship was 1979 while UNC (1980), Duke (1989) and Wake (2006) have won championships since. State has gone through seven coaches since the last championship. (Shoulda kept Amato…the program would be MUCH better off if he were still here and probably won a championship (or two). Terrible decision to get rid of Chuck…he was a State guy and woulda stayed forever!
