Pack/Orange Cowdog Appreciation Day Semi-Live Blog

We will have to see if the action on the field makes things raging.

And yes, it is Cowdog Appreciation Day at Carter-Finley. Rumour is that we might even hear from the man/canine hisself at some point. Stay tuned.

You younger types might have forgotten how NC State single handedly ruined two Donovan McNabb Heisman campaigns, in 1997 and 1998 (I think those dates are accurate). Each time, Syracuse was ranked in the Top Ten. First, we won in the Carrier Dome in amazing fashion. Forced a goalline fumble late in regulation, saving the tie. After Cuse got a quick TD in OT, we got a much harder earned one…then wisely went for two, to Orange confusion. Torry Holt was wide open for the game winner. The next year (I believe on a late-September Thursday night), the Pack mauled an even better Cuse squad in C-F. Just part of the inexplicable roller coaster ride that was the MOC era. And setting the stage for McNabb puking on the field in the Super Bowl.

Nobody is Heisman or Top Ten-worthy today…but maybe we see the electric Brandon Mitchell today. Based on poll results, SFN readers expect a win, but not a cover. Sounds about right to me. Then again, I expected Oklahoma to roll today. Oops.

3:34 – Definitely the smart move to play it safe with Mitchell and roll with Thomas. Big rushing gain on Cuse’s opening play.

3:37 – What crazy thing will Ron Cherry say/call today?

3:38 – Holding call forces Orange to throw, which they seem to do pretty poorly. Time to punt.

3:42 – Mirror image drive from State – one first down, then punt. Thrilling stuff.

4:01 – Syracuse certainly showing more on D than they did hosting the Tiggers. Gonna be a tough slog.

4:05 – Cuse 4th down at State 37. Big play.

4:08 – Timeout, penalty, punt. Anticlimactic. Story of the game so far.

4:20 – First and goal for the Cuse at the 1. Not looking good.

4:28 – Offense finally on the move. At least a bit.

4:30 – I think the cold hard truth of us not being at all good…is sinking in.

4:32 – Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Wolfpack lining up to punt.

4:34 – Momentum changing roughing the kicker? It’s nice when somebody else is stupid.

4:36 – Yes, Ron Cherry pronounces “interference” as strangely as one would imagine.

4:38 – 4th and 2, Pack going for it. Or maybe just lining up.

4:39 – BOTH teams now out of timeouts with 7 minutes left in the half.

5:23 – Pack in scoring position, can amazingly take the lead as the weather deteriorates.

5:24 – And SHB does the one thing he can’t do – take a sack. 51-yard FG is…way no good. The extra 5 yards is a killer there.

5:26 – Cardinals get runner to 3rd with no outs AGAIN – and halfway to wasting the opportunity AGAIN. 0-0.

5:28 – Crawford noodle arms what should have been no chance deep enough into a sac fly. 1-0 Redbirds.

5:31 – Syracuse avoids a negative play to set up a long, but makeable FG. They do make it…but commit a delay of game. Comedy of errors.

5:33 – Now they punt…which nets 11 yards. This game would be taken out back and shot, if only it were a horse. Or Old Yeller.

5:42 – Puig swings at ball four, with one out and bases f-cked. Woohoo!!!

5:43 – Pack goalline stand while I was watching el beisbol, short FG is good. 10-7 Orange. A win without covering would look like 14-10, folks.

5:44 – Uribe also strikes out, 1-0 after 6. Michael Wacha’s legend grows.

5:48 – I am cool with the pink stuff to promote funds for breast cancer research (except for penalty flags). But can we please quit calling it “awareness?” Who isn’t AWARE at this point?

5:51 – Pack almost to the 30, big third down.

5:52 – Quick snap fake FG doesn’t work. FFS.

5:55 – 10-7 after three. Would not be surprised if it was 10-7 after four. Syracuse will – all together now – punt once again when Q4 starts.

6:01 – Syracuse’s front seven is just teeing off now. Brutal.

6:07 – Tis Syracuse’s turn to punt. Could cut the tension with a spork.

6:09 – Siegrist just gets out of a jam, 1-0 Cards mid-7.

6:11 – No shit – SHB with a 40-yard run, and State in long FG position yet again.

6:13 – MVS falls down on 3rd and 3, short FG for the tie is good. 10-10.

6:18 – Defense looks energized. Cuse QB is putrid.

6:21 – Pack to the Cuse 43 and suddenly the Orange look sluggish.

6:23 – An ugly win is still a win. It would suck to lose to a team playing this bad (each team can feel that way).

6:25 – I was watching baseball again, and somehow Cuse is in the end zone. Fuuuuccccck. Door is open with the bobbled hold on the extra point. 16-10. At least there can’t possibly be overtime in this shitshow. Oh, and Cards need three more outs.

6:29 – 77 yards to “glory.”

6:31 – Three and out, SHB can’t find a hot read, and of course we don’t block anyone.

6:32 – I guess “defensive battle” is the network euphemism since they can’t say “shitshow.”

6:34 – And with that 40+ yard run…ballgame.

6:35 – Your straw-graspy silver lining – it would be awesome to beat the Holes going into the game 0-4 in conference play.

6:37 – TD Orange, they fake the extra point for two. 24-10. Any further live blogging will be of the top of the 9th in SL.

6:44 – Trevor Rosenthal takes the bump.

6:45 – Puig gets fourth strikeout, and acts like a baby as usual. 2 to go.

6:46 – Uribe strikes out. 1 to go.

6:47 – Sad AIDS trombone for Magic, as Rosie Ks Ethier too!!! Cards win 1-0 and head to LA with a 2-0 series lead.

Your Final Score – Syracuse 24, NC State 10.

Dorean is a good young Coach. Lots of enthusiasm with the guys and recruits hard.

To soon to make snap judgements that he may be in way over his head. He is beginning to accumulate a lot of evidence. Still, Pete Thomas is just getting worse and worse each drive and I’m still wondering if we have anyone capable of playing LB. Not burning red shirts there is going to prove to be a huge wasted opportunity.

How many of you morons even notice our already thin OL lost it’s starting center (playing out of position, filling in for Crisp at LT) on Thomas’s interception?

  3. wolf71 10/12/2013 at 7:06 PM #

Dumpster fire is being nice? How high must have TOB been when he told Debbie this was not a rebuilding year? Are we looking at years? Hope not because I do not think we have it!

  4. tjfoose1 10/12/2013 at 7:14 PM #

” Can anyone try to explain that it will be better next year even with Jacoby as QB next year?”

I guess you slept through the Russell Wilson years and for some reason can’t see the disportional talent in the young players, particularly in the ’13 class on which this staff got a late start.

  5. wolf71 10/12/2013 at 7:18 PM #

No, we were not that great then and remember when he was quarterbacking when State blew the game at MD!

  6. wolf71 10/12/2013 at 7:21 PM #

tj there was no talent then, no talent now but pray to God that maybe one day talent will finally come to Raleigh. I do not mean one or two players but talent across the board. Has not happened since the mid 70’s. So young man back off!

There are dumbshit fans and there are the rest of us who would go crazy if we couldn’t make fun and vent crazy shit during and after games. The live blog is without a doubt therapeutic for the majority of state fans sitting through Groundhog Day.

So don’t give me we had Rivers! We had one really good year with him and wasted the other three!

  9. poorfarmer 10/12/2013 at 7:23 PM #

    Agree jugawats

Oh, you can count on us showing up against FSU and playing a great game. That’s what we do. Just don’t expect us to show up against lowly Wake and Cuse. Nope. That’s not what we do. That is the story of Wolfpack football. Been that way for years even with All Pro NFL QBs under center.

This was a winnable game. I get that we have injuries. It was still winnable and I felt we left points on the table, and eventually the D just couldn’t hold up. Not a great coaching day by any stretch.

Nonody thought we would be much this year and I agree. It will take some time to right this ship and DD knows it if he didn’t get the message in W-S. I am now in casual viewing mode the rest of the way. Don’t expect much and 6 wins really would be gravy.

“Rivers! We had one really good year with him”
    4th in conference

  12. Wufpacker 10/12/2013 at 7:31 PM #

Hey, we got a parade. That settles it.

  13. vtpackfan 10/12/2013 at 7:33 PM #

What does our starting center and Jacoby Brissette have to do with Cuse averaging 10 yards a carry? I know Cato Bishop was the best against the run but he’s just one guy.
Two weeks in a row that our tackling was beyond unacceptable.

  14. tjfoose1 10/12/2013 at 7:34 PM #

You all make me laugh, in a good way. 🙂

’71, you didn’t ask about being great, just better. RW turned otherwise 3 win teams into legit division contenders.

We won’t be great, but I’ll guarantee we’ll be markedly better next year.

  15. poorfarmer 10/12/2013 at 7:35 PM #

Markedly better? That wont take much!

  16. tjfoose1 10/12/2013 at 7:36 PM #

We’re 0-2 in the toss up games so far. Hope we can get heathly to have a good chance to try to balance that out.

  17. packpowerfan 10/12/2013 at 7:38 PM #

Vt, T.Y. McGill out too. The fact that the offense couldn’t stay on the field caught up with the D. Eventually the fatigue hits you, and the flood gates open.

  18. wolf71 10/12/2013 at 7:41 PM #

We were not contenders only pretenders! Hope DD can change that but want in one hand and sh*t in another and tell me which one fills up first!

  19. poorfarmer 10/12/2013 at 7:41 PM #

Somewhere out there TOB is having a good laugh!

  20. Wulfpack 10/12/2013 at 7:42 PM #

The best teams find a way to win even when things aren’t going their way. Think Seattle Seahawks with how they always seem to win the close ones. Think Clemson today. Think Ohio State/Northwstern last week. Tigers played awful (and looking ahead to FSU) but still won by 10. That is what talent can do for you. We don’t have it, yet.

  21. packpowerfan 10/12/2013 at 7:43 PM #

And seriously (can’t believe I of all people will say this), step back from the ledge. We weren’t going to be a great team (decent, but not great) with Mitchell starting, and now people are expecting us to “do what we’re supposed to” with a hybrid of Stone/Beck/Evans under center? Our depth was thin to begin with, and we are seeing the result of that. The good news is that these young guns are getting some hard experience.

  22. cameronoverrated 10/12/2013 at 7:45 PM #

Someone tell me please, can Sheriffs not throw the ball at all?? yes I saw that horrible throw in the end zone but that was one ball. Our problem is not injuries, coaching, bad luck or any of that. Our problem is under center. Pete struggles and the offense is stagnant with him under center. I like the guy and want him to succeed but this isn’t the offense for him. When Brandon Mitchell comes back this will be a completley different team and when he does I’m sure they’ll be tons of comments about how were healthy blah blah blah.

LETS GO RED SOX!!!!!!! Enjoy the game at 8:30 Braves fans

  23. packpowerfan 10/12/2013 at 7:47 PM #

And farmer, TOB is not laughing. UVA is 2-4 (0-2) after losing to Maryland today, and getting embarrassed at home by Ball State last week. If he is laughing it is because he managed to swindle more money for another coaching gig…which seems plausible.

  24. Wulfpack 10/12/2013 at 7:49 PM #

TOB will be hitting the road yet again very soon.

  25. packpowerfan 10/12/2013 at 7:50 PM #

overrated, the fact that Thomas is starting should tell you that injuries ARE a problem…more specifically lack of real depth. Thomas is an adequate game manager under ideal circumstances. However, three starting OL out does not make for ideal conditions. The guy isn’t a playmaker to begin with, and this is akin to burning down the shed and wondering why thet tools are unorganized.
