Pack vs. Deacs – Raging Semi-Live Blog

This week, we have an interesting matchup (bad league foe on the road is a good acid test for a team likely to be on the bowl qualification fence), combined with a dearth of channel flipping options. Thus, you good people get to suffer through at least sort of a live blogging.

The early slate is quite meh (living up to my expectations), so I have nothing clever to say pre-kickoff. See you in 90-ish minutes.

3:07 – I assume (and am prepared to be furious when said assumption is wrong) that FSCR will break away from the Ball State/WaHooWa thriller for our kickoff. Third quarter just ended in HooVille.

3:18 – The Holes are officially dead in the water. Huzzah!

3:33 – Time to switch feeds, fuckwits.

3:38 – Fury has begun, full force.

3:40 – I have seen FSCR cut away to the Holes and Devils on numerous occasions. But not for NC State, when they can show the end of an uncompetitive MAC blowout of an out-of-state team. Total f-ing bullshit.

3:43 – This is how one gets treated in Swoffy’s ACC. One set of rules for the blues, one for everyone else.

3:48 – Per GameTracker, teams have traded touchback punts.

3:52 – 4th and 2 from Wake 35 – we should have gone for it or kicked a FG. QB pooch punt was a weak call.

3:54 – Ball State can run out the clock now. Thank God. But count on a coach interview and a long commercial break. Because we aren’t one of the blues.

3:56 – Oh goodie. We get Wes Durham too.

3:57 – Ridiculous spot and Wake will have a first down inside our 15. Punting is a bad idea in any close situation. Exhibit A.

4:01 – First score of the game is a Wake TD. FFS. Same shit, different year.

4:02 – Do remember that Wake’s defense has struggled even more than its offense. We should score plenty. SHOULD.

4:05 – Possible kickoff return fumble. Nobody saying anything, though I think down by contact. Not looking like our day.

4:09 – Offense on the move. Need to finish this drive. LiveBlog will take a cooking break now.

4:47 – Cooking completed, and Wake has bled a shitton of clock. 7-3, nearing the two minute non-warning.

4:50 – Wake with a silly 14 yard punt. Stupid, now we need to capitalize.

4:52 – Wide open deep throw, perfect by Thomas…and it’s dropped. Flat out dropped. Wake’s front seven is so slow that Thomas is killing them with his LEGS. It’s the only thing that’s working for us.

5:01 – It’s a half full of coaching Karma – we also punish Grobe’s weak punt decision with seven, and it’s 10-7 Pack.

5:02 – Was feeling good until the secondary shat the bed. Ugh.

5:04 – Aaaaaannnnd the game feed goes kaput. Mickey Mouse crap.

5:06 – Per GameTracker…TD pass to Campanaro on 3rd and goal. 6 seconds left. Good Lord.

Your Halftime Score – Wake 14, State 10.

5:26 – In case you were wondering, Clemson murdering Cuse even worse than they did Wake. Miami on the march to take the lead. I think they are really just a rich man’s Maryland – good enough to win 7-8 games against an ACC schedule, but no threat to Clemson or FSU.

5:29 – Now that I can see the replay…Campanaro WAS double covered, but each guy foolishly bit on the double move. Duh, it was third and goal FFS.

5:31 – Smith’s injury is huge – this kind of front seven would be sliced and diced by the jet sweep.

5:35 – What would have been a 60-yard TD to Underwood is just a yard or two overthrown. Ramos’ circus catch is wasted and State will punt.

5:39 – Empty backfield, somehow NOBODY diagnoses the OBVIOUS QB draw.

5:41 – Better late than never I guess.

5:43 – FG is good, lead is seven. But no…we ROUGHED THE FUCKING KICKER.

5:48 – Immediate TD and State is in deep wolfshit.

5:53 – Offense is on the move again. Gonna need at least two TDs.

6:00 – The toss sweep is ineffective, 4th and goal. Kicking the FG, ugh.

6:11 – Now the defense steps up, and the offense fades. Very frustrating. And my kids are fighting over shoes. Fucking shoes. This is my life.

6:13 – ACC football. Still a dumpster fire. 3rd quarter is kaput, 21-13 Wake.

6:17 – Three and out redux. On the bright side…terrific punt.

6:21 – That was NOT a horsecollar. But Campanaro convinces the gullible ref anyway. Again…God, how I hate the ACC.

Amen….Wulfpack….we loose against this team..whats left for the rest of the season….when does
    BBall start

  2. redcanine 10/05/2013 at 7:14 PM #

We didn’t get any pressure on Price because Wake’s D was holding all game long. Those designed draws was Grobe’s way of giving us the finger. We NEVER got into the backfield because we couldn’t break free from the jersey grabs.

Is Price more elusive than Boyd? Nah.

Campanero burned us all on his own. We knew he’d get his.

Oh, what’s the deal with Hegedus? True freshman 3rd stringer Cherry is getting way more run than Charlie.

    I’m just reading, ‘foose.

Can’t bring myself to comment currently.

Better to keep one’s mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

And so on and so forth….

EDIT – Plus, the Dawgs are shatting it up in Knoxville. Oy. A day that started with so much promise ends in such disarray.

So relax people. Vent the exasperation, but relax. It’s one game in a process in our house of horrors against the team that circles our game every year.

Very disappointing, but not a surprise. Injuries, youth, and voodoo played roles along with poor play, mental lapses, and less than stellar execution.

  5. tjfoose1 10/05/2013 at 7:18 PM #

” When you lose to as awful of a team as Wake is, you cant say that, Foose.”

Knowing our roster, sure I can. We ain’t Alabama. And news flash, Wake has coaches too. They even give out schollies.

  6. wolf71 10/05/2013 at 7:18 PM #

No I would not GA but have been watching for almost 40 yrs. In today’s world and in recruiting you cannot have these kind of games. Hope coach D is successful and he breaks our years of futility. We hope this is a blip and adjustments should have been made and will be made in future games. I am realistic not looking for championships for a while but looking for consistent from players and coaches.

  7. tjfoose1 10/05/2013 at 7:19 PM #

” Realistically, we should lose out.”

Wow. I’d hate to live in your reality. Only linear thinking there?

  8. Wulfpack 10/05/2013 at 7:19 PM #

No, not a surprise. Which is what makes it oh so very disappointing. Wake is most likely the worst team in the ACC. They are awful. And we were the same today. Long way to go.

  9. ncsu1987 10/05/2013 at 7:39 PM #

Wow, having a little trouble believing some of these comments.

So essentially a huge swath of our fan base actually EXPECTED to walk into WS and dominate this team? On what basis? Past performance? This year’s performance? Blind hope and voodoo? Did you read any of the articles this week on the blog?

Globe ALWAYS has his team ready for NC teams in WS. Sorry, I refuse to jump on the “we suck/damn, we’re good” pendulum. Realistically, ‘foose hit the nail on the head. We are about where we should be, perhaps slightly ahead of schedule.

    Jesus Christ.

It’s official – Pete Thomas is slower than Mike Glennon; he looked as if he was moving in slow motion.

Regardless, injuries are killing us; we only have so much ammunition and we’re running out of bullets. I think we can be competitive with our stars healthy, but without them we’re just not very good. Oh, and stupid ass penalties don’t help; I guess bad habits are hard to break.

  11. Texpack 10/05/2013 at 7:50 PM #

I didn’t expect to dominate. I also didn’t expect to get dominated. We were completely overmatched against an awful team. When a team is guaranteed 8 yards just by lining up a certain way your DC doesn’t have a clue.

  12. PackFamily 10/05/2013 at 7:54 PM #

Tough loss, and losing Byrd hurt the secondary bad. As i said earlier, PT earned some props. However, he also gets some criticism with his decision making late in the game. At LA T, there was a clear dropoff when BM went down. It is what it is. Thee only thing that has me pissed is letting Campanaro run loose all day. Why not double/triple team him? What explanation is satisfactory?

  13. NCSU84 10/05/2013 at 8:00 PM #

Those who know anything about football understand that, for the most part, you live or die by your QB. The leadership, confidence, winning attitude, etc. begins with that position. We lost our starting QB in the first game of the season to injury. In years past, those of us who have been around understand that this injury could have been devastating with a second stringer inserted (Jay Davis, Marcus Stone – need I say more?). But Pete has stepped in and was good enough to keep our team’s head above water as best he could. I am glad we had someone to turn to when Brandon went down. Now that Brandon’s return is imminent, the season begins for me – can’t wait.

Everyone should have taken notice when Richmond’s personnel was pretty even with ours. No sure wins on the schedule.

You have the unwinnables (Clemson, FSU) and everything else is on the 25-75% odds to win spectrum. Losing out and winning out would be extremely statistically improbable. We just need to cobble together 6 wins, somehow. That has always been the highest and best goal for this team, if you have a realistic bone in your body.

And a bad team certainly can have an A game, like we did against Clemson. That doesn’t mean we are lazy or poorly coached because we can’t play that A game every week.

  15. BJD95 10/05/2013 at 8:07 PM #

This is also the downside of playing a cupcake-heavy, 8 home game schedule. October shouldn’t be the first time you go on the road.

  16. triadwolf 10/05/2013 at 8:17 PM #

We were going the be a mediocre ACC team from the get go; perhaps if things went perfect 8 or 9 wins may have been a possibility. So now we have our starting QB out, Cato-Bishop out, one of starting DB’s (can’t recall which), Smith and Byrd get hurt in this game, Underwood is banged up, and we haven’t started the same O line in consecutive games yet. Then throw in a multitude of calls going against us on several game/momentum changing plays this season.

I’d say that’s a good ways from things going perfect. If we make a bowl it’ll be a successful season. If not, it won’t be a failure. I just hope DD doesn’t eventually get fed up with NC State sh&t and leave. Has any team ever had the string of injuries to key players like we’ve had over the last several years?

  17. jljones 10/05/2013 at 8:28 PM #

Looks like we got out coached and out played. If we had played half as well as we did against Clemson maybe we would have at least been competitive. You can only do so much with inferior talent but we probably have enough to beat the likes of Wake. Ole Tom left us with his “bohunks” and forgot to tell DD that he will have to “coach them up” . Seriously, DD will need to greatly improve out talent if he is going to be competitive

  18. archdalepack 10/05/2013 at 8:53 PM #

I’m confused, we had enough talent to compete with Clemson, but we don’t have enough talent to compete with Wake?

  19. NCSU84 10/05/2013 at 8:59 PM #

“I’m confused, we had enough talent to compete with Clemson, but we don’t have enough talent to compete with Wake?”

Perhaps Clemson had an off night or overlooked us. Football is funny that way.

  20. SaccoV 10/05/2013 at 9:41 PM #

I’m not buying the whole ‘out-coached’ meme going on here. I completely agree with the ‘out-played’ part. Grobe has (1) a more experienced team and (2) a superior QB-WR tandem–two things which Doeren does not have. To this end, I was watching Grobe on the FS feed, and Grobe hardly even acknowledged the players or the coaches during the game. Our team is thin, and we lost our best running option (Smith) early in the game. The pooch punt was certainly questionable, but it was very early in the game, not the standard put on a 4-and-1 in the 4th quarter from midfield which TOB seemed enamored with. As for shadowing Campanero, Byrd was fair, but I’ll take Campanero to win that match-up 85% of the time based entirely on experience. Byrd has played in 11 college games; Campanero is a three-year starter who will probably break most of the receiving records at WFU. Outplayed, definitely.

blah blah blah, complain, complain, complain, complain, whine, whine, whine……Pete Thomas can not move the ball or our coaching staff can not come up with a set of plays to make him comfortable. Pete has happy feet and has extreme trouble making proper choices with the ball. On defense I felt like I was watching last years basketball team, the oppositions best player always lit us up: enter Campanaro. Disgrace, yet I expected it. freaking horrible. Anyone want my UNC/ECU tickets?

  22. MickQ 10/05/2013 at 10:02 PM #

Bad loss to a bad team. State looked lethargic and uninspired. Don’t know if it is coaching or other. But things better get figured out soon. I am hopeful that the team will learn from this debacle. Another loss to lowly Wake. Ugh. Frustration has set in. When is the voodoo going to end?????

  23. JohnGalt78 10/05/2013 at 10:13 PM #

Thought for 2015 and beyond when we are obligated to return to Winston Salem…..for sure we can’t forfeit the game. Doubtful that would be allowed by the conference. It certainly would help us avoid injuries for a worthless cause. We obviously don’t come to WS with ANY expectation that we can win. So why bother? My idea is to send the scout team. Reward their thankless contribution by giving them a brief moment in the sun. What do we have to lose?

  24. cameronoverrated 10/05/2013 at 10:22 PM #

FYI, since last years debacle at Chapel Hill didn’t learn anyone let me now say….THIS is NOT our STATE. stupid logo made even dumber, please lose that

  25. Wulfpack 10/05/2013 at 10:30 PM #

I would like those Pack fans “guaranteeing” an easy victory today to please step forward. I hate it because it makes us look so dumb as a fanbase beating our chests as if we have done something.

I can take a loss at Wake. We all know we always lose there. But what is hard to swallow is losing bad there to a very poor Wake team that may not win another game.

We must give Doeren time. It is not on him. But if he didn’t know it already, tonight he knows he has his work cut out for him.
