NC State +32 at Florida State

Our beloved Wolfpack travel to Tallahassee to take on Famous Jameis Winston and the second-ranked Florida State Seminoles today at 3:30pm. If you can stomach watching, the game will be televised (split) on either your local ABC channel or ESPN2.

Obviously, State’s thin and inexperienced secondary will have to find a way to neutralize FSU’s all-everything freshman quarterback. I don’t really understand how that is supposed to happen when I think about how poorly the secondary has played all season, especially in key third down situations. But,maybe Jack Tocho is really an interception machine like he showed against Syracuse before his injury. How good has Winston been this year?

Winston is averaging 12 yards per attempt and 314.2 yards per game, has a 20-3 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions, and a passer rating that ranks second nationally. He strolled into Death Valley under some incredible pressure and played like it was nothin’. Sometimes recruiting rankings are off, and then other times they are really, really right.

CFN has this preview and it picks Florida State 47-13.

The most important item I am watching today is the injury report. NC State desperately needs some good news regarding health as we head into a November schedule that presents a string of games that are all winnable if we can roll out the first stringers — UNC, Boston College, Duke, East Carolina and Maryland provide Coach Doeren five opportunities to win at least three games to become bowl eligible in his first season.

The injury news did get better this week. In addition to Mitchell’s return, the depth chart for today indicated that almost everyone who could return has returned with the lone exception being Robert Crip (still out). Even though FSU’s defense is ferocious, it will be good to see Rashard Smith and Marquez Valdes-Scantling back on offense; so, I’m looking to today to provide Brandon Mitchell something akin to a ‘scrimmage’ to allow him shake off the rust and get some experience under center to be prepared for November.

    Kudos to Shadrach.

Rebuilding schmebuilding – DD does not have what it takes to build a program – after 3-4 years of mediocrity, we’ll be glad to pay him to leave.

Good job, Shadrach, it makes it look at least a little bit better.

The most positive thing about this team is that they don’t give up.

I noticed that Northern Illinois is back in the Top-25. He really failed building that program up there. Completely botched the job. I guess you expect him to take Tom O’Brien’s sloppy seconds and win his first year?

A: Eventually, the litter of puppies grows up and stops whining.

    Ok guys… I need your help…
    What should I do?

Take a shower and go to dinner with my Mother In Law or
watch the rest of the football game?

Shadrack is the only guy who has played like he isn’t scared of the ‘Noles, kind of the way Tory Holt played them when he caught all those passes and got all those YAC stats. The was the year before State beat them in Raleigh.

Agreed that Doeren is coaching his tail off. He’s got to turn this game into a teaching moment, somehow.

I hope it pays off next week. The Cheaters are going to be confident after beating BC today and are going to get all the run in the press and will be the favorites. DD needs his team to have confidence and definitely in the mood to hand a curb-stomping to those jerks.

I know what Gallagher’s watermelons must feel like.

    “Thirty-two point game. Very interesting.”

^Guess he’s talking about for Vegas.

Well, at least it won’t be 77-7 … coulda been if they really wanted, I guess.

So…the question becomes: against UNC, do you start Mitchell or Thomas at QB?

    Last joke…
    I gotta go to dinner…..

    —————–

Two Lower Alabama crackers (North Florida good old boys), Bubba and Jim Bob, are sitting at their favorite bar, drinking beer

Bubba turns to Jim Bob and says, “You know, I’m tired of going through life without an education. Tomorrow I think I’ll go over to FSU, and sign up for some classes.”

Jim Bob thinks it’s a good idea, and the two leave.

The next day, Bubba goes down to Tennessee Street and meets the Dean of Admissions, who signs him up for the four basic classes: Math, English, History, and Logic. “Logic?” Bubba says. “What’s that?” The dean says, “I’ll show you.

Do you own a weed-eater?” “Yeah.” “Then logically speaking, because you own a weed-eater, I think that you would have a yard.”

    “That’s true, I do have a yard.”

“I’m not done, the dean says. “Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house.”

“Yes, I do have a house.”

“And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family.”

    “I have a family.”

“I’m not done yet. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife.”

“Yes, I do have a wife.” “And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual.”

“I am a heterosexual. That’s amazing, you were able to find out all of that because I have a weed-eater.” Excited to take the class now, Bubba shakes the Dean’s hand and leaves to go meet Jim Bob at the bar.

He tells Jim Bob about his classes, how he is signed up for Math, English, History, and Logic. “Logic?” Jim Bob says, “What’s that?”

    Bubba says, “I’ll show you.
    Do you have a weed-eater?”

    “No.”

    “Then you’re a queer.”

    Ya’ll have a good evening.
    Go Cards!!!

I admire Thomas’ effort and resilience this season, but we know the product with him on the field (not too good).

If Mitchell can rebound and have a good week of practice I’m definitely going that route. Mitchell should hopefully be able to trigger a ground assault next week given that the Holes haven’t exactly been stalwarts at stopping the run (or anything else, for that matter). First week back and going against FSU – he can be forgiven a bit IMO.

Silver lining here: glad to see our guys and coaches fighting at the end.

  16. Texpack 10/26/2013 at 6:37 PM #

It’s nice to see us offer some resistance in the second half. DD can’t beat FSU with 4 straight recruiting classes ranked around 65. The 2015 season is when we can start to evaluate him as a coach.

The effort in the first half looked poor. At least we didn’t fold completely. Here’s hoping Mitchell gets a little rhythm from this half that carries over to next week.

  17. Texpack 10/26/2013 at 6:38 PM #

    Perhaps another onside kick?

    OK… one more joke….

A man walks up to a woman in his office and tells her that her hair smells nice.

The woman immediately goes into her supervisor’s office and tells him that she wants to file a sexual harassment suit and explains why.

The supervisor is puzzled by this and says, “What’s wrong with the co-worker telling you that your hair smells nice?”

The woman replies, “He’s a midget.”

Props to Shadrach today. I know FSU has their 8th-stringers in, but that’s how you become a leader and inspire others. By working your ass off even down 42 – nothing.

“I noticed that Northern Illinois is back in the Top-25. He really failed building that program up there. ”

DD did NOT build Northern Illinois. He inherited an 11-3 team with an NFL caliber QB who played in the MAC. DD hasn’t proven he’s capable of rebuilding anything. We’re essentially his first shot at it.

  21. JaxPackMan 10/26/2013 at 6:47 PM #

InHoc, obviously money can’t buy you happiness. All I know is when you look around at the top college programs they all recruit better athletes upfront than NC State and spend a heck of a lot more per athlete. I reckon it can be do done on the cheap with less talented players, but I am not aware a program that has consistently won with that method.

Duke is going to beat VT in Lane Stadium tonight.

13-10, Duke ball, 2:30 left and VT has no timeouts.

  23. wufpup76 10/26/2013 at 6:52 PM #

Duke – VT being reffed by Ron Cherry’s crew … Duke up 13-10 w/ about 3:30 to go. Duke has ball, 3rd + 7 – QB draw gets close to the line to gain. Rather than immediately signaling for measurement or review, Cherry’s crew let’s about 10 seconds run off the clock and then ultimately just gives Duke a first down. Ten more seconds or so pass and then the review call comes in.

Unreal. The game is on the line and the crew is just out there wasting time … Cherry bomb.

Duke converted on 4th and short btw, and VT is out of timeouts. Quite unbelievably, it looks like Duke might win in Blacksburg.

  24. wufpup76 10/26/2013 at 6:55 PM #

VT fans on cliff-jumping watch. Wow.

Alias troll. That’s an accurate statement… I am happy with the way the team fought in the second half.
