Interesting: ACC Men’s Basketball, Ranked by Expenditures

College sports these days is big business, and according the Basketball State, the ACC all of the team combined for nearly $100 Million in expenses last season.  Granted, Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh were not yet members of the conference, but given that they are now members of what may be the best hoops conference in the country, I’ve included their numbers for comparison.

Beware that these are raw numbers — some schools may be ranked higher than others due to salaries, travel and arena expenses and the like, but it does illustrate how much money goes into the economy to provide a season of basketball.

What the F does Clemson spend money on?

Are expenses like cupcakes, parking tickets, and rental cars included?

    ^ LMAO

And while granted, I haven’t stopped to digest the full meaning/implications here…

My gut reaction is when you’re spending less than VT and BC, and barely more than Clemson, then you have no right to expect elite results.

We may have lower costs because we have an advantageous arena deal — we lease at a reduced rate and Gale Force Holdings has to keep the building up to snuff. I’m not sure if those numbers are included in that data, but it would make sense if they were and it would make more sense of the overall expenditures we make.

I couldn’t find any methodology behind the numbers. My instinct is that there is no standard list of line items included in these budgets and the results are therefore almost meaningless. Large chunks of expense may reside in the booster club, or in an arena authority, while various levels of staff and expenditures may be classified as university vs athletic dept.

    Agree w/ Scrotch.
We have the nicest arena in the conf, so that should lift us up there no matter how we actually pay for it. It is an expenditure to support the program.
Clearly coaching salaries are blowing up the top end of the scale.

Where is Pittsburgh’s numbers? That would put it above $100M.

Given the relative closeness of the numbers of Boston College and Miami to us, the difference may lie in the increased travel expenditures of those schools. We don’t have to travel far to play at UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, UVA, VT and Clemson.

With ‘Cuse its the Carrier Dome which they only share with football and offsets are only due to special events. Boeheim also makes a big chunk of change.

I’ve spent all day crunching numbers for graphs and such so I’m more skeptical about the data than just about anybody on here. Until you know how the number was arrived at, you know zilch.

As a CFA/CPA, my expert opinion is these #’s are garbage. There is no transparency nor official and pervasive financial reporting guidance.

We’d probably be able to determine more about the methodology if the federal government website at the bottom weren’t offline thanks to the government shutdown.
