Former UNC football tutor Jennifer Wiley appeared in court today, facing charges that she illegally encouraged a former UNC player to sign with a sports agent. Jennifer Lauren Wiley Thompson, is facing four counts of athlete-agent inducement,  a Class I felony that carries a maximum sentence of 15 months in prison and a maximum fine of $25,000 for each offense.

The charges, which were unveiled in a Hillsborough courtroom today allege that Wiley purchased round-trip airfare for Greg Little, as well as making deliveries of packages containing cash to the former player.

More indictments are expected to be unveiled later this week.

    I’ll be looking forward to hearing who the other people are that were indicted and to see if any of them start “singing” to save their own hides. Assuming she has no other record, I expect she will be offered a good plea deal in exchange for truthful testimony and information against any others involved. That is usually what happens when there are multiple defendants. This could get interesting.

    From what I have heard/seen, her lawyer, Joe Chesire V is saying that she is a victim of being ‘too nice’ or something like that.

    I fully expect this to get tried in the court of public opinion before it gets in front of a jury, and really, can anyone expect a fair trial of the alleged misdeeds of someone from the athletic department at UNC-CH in Orange Freaking County, NC?

    How much $$$ is worth taking the rap? 1st time offense and time off for good behavior… she could be out in a matter of months (or sooner) and never have to work again.

    BTW, how does a tutor afford the likes of Joe Chesire anyhow? He’s one of 2-3 best defense attorneys in the state. I am sure that his time is not that cheap.

    If you don’t know by now, you’re just not gonna know. There won’t be any singing. No one in any authority wants anything more than some CYA “rogue groupee/out-of-control-agent” attention on this. If they would put the heat to Nyang’oro or Crowder (I mean serious jail time heat), then the cards might start falling into place, but Wiley (and the agents to come) are just easy target peripherals and they know that. And Joe Cheshire on her “legal team”? I guess Matlock and Perry Mason are dead.

    I would guess that as long as she doesn’t speak ill of the U*…her legal representation will remain at a substantial (likely 100%) discount.

    Call me jaded and cynical, I guess.

    The pics on the Charlotte Observer website are priceless. Sweet Jenny is married now yet chose not to keep her maiden name. Go figure. And from the looks of hubby she had the best time of her life when she had little greg.

    According to WRAL, she is looking at 15 months per charge and there’s four of them, so she could be looking at 5 years.

    Note the second sentence in this copy and paste of paragraph three of the N and O’s Editorial Opinion page:

    “Marshall got involved after an NCAA investigation. There is no joy in this proceeding for anyone. But the football program as run by fired Coach Butch Davis was prospering on the field but allegedly not living up to very high standards off the field. In addition to the allegations involving Thompson and Little, there were reports in The News & Observer about bogus courses in the African studies department, favored by athletes and requiring very little work.”

    Really? No joy for anyone? I am soooooooo freakin joyful right now I could crap a rainbow. Anybody else feeling the joy?

    I am as much of a UNC-hater as anyone, but seriously, doesn’t this seem a little extreme for what she did? “Agent-athlete inducement?” what the hell? A FELONY?

    Why is the government even involved in this? Isn’t the NCAA a membership organization. Why should we be wasting taxpayer resources prosecuting this girl?

    Am I missing something? can someone explain why what she did is worthy of a felony?

    I feel totally different about the AFAM thing. That was probably MILLIONS of taxpayer money over the course of a decade down the drain in salaries, overhead, etc. for fake classes that north carolina taxpayers were paying for. That strikes me as something that should be a felony for the sheer misappropriation of resources.

    They had probable cause to arrest her which means Little or someone sung about the cash. Question now is, does she 1) take a plea deal and plead guilty to a misdemeanor (dumb of her but she is only a teacher – i.e. no significant harm to future professional achievement), 2) fight it in trial (lots of discovery that would be fun), or perhaps the most tantalizing scenario, 3) take a plea deal to have charges dismissed if she rats out the handler behind the scenes – the source of the cash.

    As most here know, she was a puppet (who rumor has it slept with several players and the coach) of a much larger scheme. I doubt anything more juicy comes of this than agents used her to funnel cash. No coaches would be dumb enough (black santa?) to get too involved.

    I have a completely different take on this than most.
    This is a way for UNC to continue to say “it is not us. This inconvenience was caused by a few rogue people not our squeaky clean athletic dept and administration. We got rid of these isolated individuals and see they are being prosecuted (and we aren’t which proves we had nothing to do with it) so everything is fine over here now and the Carolina Way lives.”
