Wolfpack Basketball Roster Configuration

We thought it would be a good time to re-assess the projected roster and scholarship configuration of the Wolfpack basketball program after Saturday’s announcement that Top 50 high school basketball player, Abdul Malik Abu will be playing in Raleigh (click here).

As you can see from the projected roster below, the recent additions of Desmond Lee and Trevor Lacy have helped re-balance the Wolfpack’s scholarship spacing in the coming cycle of scholarships. We are still heavy on the inexperienced end of the spectrum, but are gradually improving. The expected early departure of TJ Warren after this season won’t help the spacing much, and would serve to leave State with only four upperclassmen in 2014-2015; but the significant playing time that this year’s freshmen will have received will help. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look at the stockpiling of young talent in the post at the forward position and wonder if there is ultimately room for everyone to get the kind of playing time that (unfortunately) kids now expect to make themselves happy. One thing we don’t have to worry about is any defections near the top of the ladder as Ralston Turner, Desmond Lee and Trevor Lacy have already ‘shot their bullet’ with transferring into the program.

oh noes! Lacy is sitting out through 2104!!111!!!

Aside from the expected Warren departure (which I’m not convinced would be in his best interest) I think the ‘ships are as spaced out as well as can be expected based on what Gott was given. I think rotations will look like this over the next 2 years:

2013 Starters: Lewis, Lee, Ralston, Warren, Vandy
    Bench: Barber, Anya, Washington, Freeman

2014 Starters: Lewis, Lacey, Ralston, Washington, Anya
Bench: Barber, Lee, Abu, Freeman, Martin twins

What position is being targeted with the last available scholarship? Perhaps a 2G?

  4. vapackfan 09/10/2013 at 2:45 PM #

Just watched Abu videos. Looks like a strong kid. He and Barber could be a very nice combo. Agree pack leader Warren would be well served to stay through his senior year. By then he would be as valuable as RH was this year.

Barber going two years with out being a starter? I don’t think that’s happening unless I missed some new prognosis for his abilities. Of course that’s the big question. How is Gott going to use Cat and Tyler? In today’s world of big time basketball, I think you stay inexperienced. If you get great players, they leave early. Tyler is one who should stay unless thru lack of playing time he transfers.

“oh noes! Lacy is sitting out through 2104!”

I guess he needs some seasoning.

I keep hearing TJ is gone after this year, and I wish him well for his own sake. The next level is a big jump, and frankly, from what I have seen, he is not even close to ready.

Many experts say the biggest improvement in a player is between their Fr and Soph seasons, and I hope so for TJ’s sake.

Should we start a history class here? Ced Simmons, Josh Powell, even Calvin should come to mind as a start, but even JJ has not materialized into the big name player many thought he would. I would take any of the first 3 over TJ and where are they now?

If Vandenberg is a starter, we are in trouble. I realize he is a senior, but I expect one of the Frosh to win that job. Anya is a load. It will be interesting to see what he looks like after some Richard Howell-like weightlifting.

  9. Pack Leader 09/10/2013 at 3:12 PM #

Vandy will win the job until December due to experience, and the fact that Anya reported to Raleigh weighing over 300lbs. Gott has publicly stated he wont play any if he’s over 285…

Washington is too thin to play a true Center, atleast as a freshman. And I dont believe a Warren/Washington frontcourt could compete at the highest level (despite his height, Warren is a SF).

Looks like a good line up. I’m counting on Anya beating out Vandy and Cat showing the type of player he is and not riding the pine. TJ should have a great season, but that remains to be seen.

OK… now all of ya’ll know I am an old basketball guy…
and ya’ll know Coach Gott and Co. don’t have a bigger fan than yours truly…..

BUT… I’m sitting here thinking… we just started what could be one of the most positive and exciting FOOTBALL seasons in a while….

AND NO POSTS ON SFN THIS WEEK ABOUT NC STATE FOOTBALL… and now this one…

If nothing else…. our old friend Russell was in Charlotte Sunday afternoon… played pretty well I hear…

If you need some content… just PM me and I will see what I can do to help out…. Maybe I can cajole my cuz into helping me….

Either that or fix the damn forums here… all I am getting over there are 404s this afternoon.

  12. FunPack 09/10/2013 at 6:49 PM #

Bill I believe the forums are gone. I can’t even get a 404, since yesterday.

Announcement soon to come on the front page here? I assume that new forums are in work? Looking forward to that, if it’s a-happenin’.

    Mr. Bill,

I understand the frustration but dang a little variety is good every once in a while.

  14. Fastback68 09/10/2013 at 7:23 PM #

Any chance we could get photos of Wolfpack cheerleaders / dance squad in tasteful configurations on this site. That’s some variety I can live with.

  15. VaWolf82 09/10/2013 at 7:45 PM #

we just started what could be one of the most positive and exciting FOOTBALL seasons in a while…

See what happens when you post after a few (too many) drinks?

While am very optimistic about the upcoming basketball season, I too am disappointed in the lack of football’s content with that being the present season. Should be the major subject, for now, and anything of lesser content, unless it be some big breaking news. Like the college sex scandal I heard about at a major college football program, o that is being revealed, and one of the team’s assistants was the coach of the holes. Interesting huh?

  17. redcanine 09/10/2013 at 8:59 PM #

Who is going to be the captain or vocal leader of this team? I’m guessing WBS or TJW. Though it could be a transfer, which would be disappointing because neither have played one minute in a Wolfpack uniform. I sorta hope WBS becomes that guy given he’s a point guard.

  18. Virginia Wolf 09/10/2013 at 9:00 PM #

I too am very dissappointed in the lack of Football content recently. We are in the midst of Football season and we’re not getting any Football news. I like the basketball content but don’t ignore Football Season. Thanks!

  19. BJD95 09/10/2013 at 9:19 PM #

There is about as much chance that I start as there is for Vandy. No f-ing way.

I fully expect Cat and WBS to start.

What football news is there to report? We don’t play again for 9 days.

If you look at the top of the page, there is a tab called “Write a Guest Column”. Feel free to help yourself (or not) and quit bitching (either way).

    * Forums are gone for now. Working on a much better re-boot and restructure of the site.

    * Bill — would LOVE some help with content. Support is always welcome.

  23. VaWolf82 09/11/2013 at 8:01 AM #

When Jeff first told me about the forums, I thought that it was a bad idea and would encourage idiots from the monkey boards to come over and start slinging feces here as well. However, that didn’t out to be the case (except during the last BB coaching search) and I miss them.

PS – Thanks for illustrating a better way to tell someone to quit bitching.

  24. PoppaJohn 09/11/2013 at 8:37 AM #

Well let me just say, THANKS FOR THE HOOPS CONTENT!
Perhaps there has been a slight lull in football (I hadn’t noticed), but obviously being between seasons the basketball content is spotty. Two articles (Abu signing) in a week is GREAT!
If Vandy starts it will be because he’s living up to what we’ve all imagined to be his potential as a defensive stopper in the paint. However, I doubt it. He’s just too slow and awkward for Gott’s offensive pace. But I can see why Leader inserted him.
But, we’ve “Gott” to put at least one big out there with TJ – it will be interesting to see who.

Has the delay time increased between when you submit and when you see your post? Seems longer than it used to take.
And my previous post didn’t show up at all. I don’t think there was any inappropriate content.
